A look Back at TV and Media Trends of 2013

A Look Back   Opinions
 Written By Skyler

2013 was an interesting year in the world of TV and Media  we look at some trends we noticed this year.

 1.   More Cable News Channels
Even though, cable news channels   had a down rating year ,    there was a launch of some new news channels  and the adding of some that have been around.
Al Jazeera made it's splash first  : on January 2nd this year they announced  they were buying Al Gore's Liberal talk channel , Current TV.   Al Jazeera Media which launched  Al Jazerra English  in 2006 was trying to get the news network into America since launch but has face troubles getting it on cable systems.  The closest it got was broadcasts on public tv channels,  some 24/7 using digital sub channels  and online.  Though the announcement that  they were buying  Current caused some cable companies like Time Warner Cable  to drop Current.  ( Though later  Time Warner Cable added Al Jazeera America. )  Al Jazeera America was launched  August 20th , it was made as a news channel that would focus on American news with international news splashed in.  Most of the programming is done in the United States they hired anchors and reporters.  Only a few Al Jazeera English programs and newscasts air on the channel.   The Channel is different than what you would see on CNN, Fox News ,and MSNBC.  No talking head lead opinion shows , sometimes long form stories,  more news broadcast programs.  If it will last is still to be known and what holds for the network in 2014  is unknown.
Another channel , though  had less press than Al Jazeera America  was One America News Network , this network is owned by the owners of Wealth TV  Herring Broadcasting  and  The Washington Times , it was launched as a new channel to also have conservative leaning talk shows , it so far was not on alot of Cable systems.  Though did land a cable later this year.
When ABC News and Univision announced in 2012  that they were going to launch a channel together it  may have been a surprise and also made some wonder what or how the channel would be.  The idea of the channel is a target audience of young English speaking Latinos with a news and lifestyle channel.  It replaced ABC's unloved news channel  ABC News Now.    So far not known how the channel is fairing, there  of course might be more programs and expansion in 2014.
We wonder if any more news channels will be launched in 2014 , also as BBC World news and other internationals also get expansion in the US  it's a good thing that more news channel opitions are opening for viewers especially if viewers are tired of CNN, MSNBC , and Fox News Channel .

 2.   Binge Watching
Usually  the word "binge"  has a bad connotation to it  but this year the continuation of the concept of "Binge-viewing " . Netflix , Hulu and others have been adding  shows they are bought for the use on exclusive on their services. For instance when  Netflix brought back the long-canceled  FOX show " Arrested Devolpment" the whole  season was  available  to stream   so a viewer could watch the show their own way including  the whole season in a day.  Usually on physical television ? , maybe linear, you have to wait maybe a week for the new episode of your show the idea of being able to watch a whole season might be more fun.
It also shows a trend of people choosing to watch television on at random time on their own time. We see this trend of having mere online original shows   continuing in 2014 , along with people  watching TV their time and ways.  Though , if you are cord- cutter it maybe a little harder to  follow some of your network favorites  ABC is joining Fox  in soon only letting cable subscribers  watch their programs online.  (Though still appearing free on part Disney owned Hulu.)  or you would have to wait a week for it to be free on Watch ABC.  For now , the CW, NBC and CBS are still free but we'll see what 2014 brings.
Cable companies are now offering perks to make sure you stay for instance ,watching channels live through their websites and apps. Comcast announced they will adding  channels to watch outside the home on apps.  Many channels themselves like Disney Channel , have also added ways for you watch their programs on websites and apps Live and full episodes.

   3.   Local Stations up for grabs
This is more of interesting trend was this year  was  companies  that own local stations buying other companies that own local TV stations.  For instance , Sinclair  which owns a lot of stations in the first place , bought  some stations from Cox , the bought the company Barrington  , it bought Seattle based Fisher Communications ,  Allbritton was  also  purchased .  Gannett also went on it's own  shopping  buying up Belo's tv stations  (except for 3) .   Tribune company , who emerged from bankruptcy late last year, bought Local TVLLC , a company the Tribune worked with anyway so it might have well just bought it.  Hoak was sold to  Grey TV.     There could be chance for more in 2014 and also makes  a wonder why so many are being sold.  It is causing the shrinkage of the market though  , and could also make more fights with  cable companies affect larger amounts of people .  If anything it probably is not the end of this.

Sunday Talks : It's a boy

Sundays Talks , The Media
  Written by Skyler  M

The Big news this week  in the media perspective was the new royal baby , named  Prince George Alexander Louis ( 3 great names for boys by, the way) as the new heir the throne is born  to wait until it will be his time.   The US media even got the bug to cover  the UK royals , as they like to do. The coverage of things like this do get a little weird, the media reporters were sent to stand infront of a hospital door to say the same thing they said 5 minutes ago "No baby yet".   By Monday afternoon in the US time scale  ,we found out that baby is born and it's a boy.  Now many could be bothered by the coverage , but I do say  that at least it's a positive story in the news. Sometimes you need a positive story sometime  and this was.
                                     View image on Twitter
                                  image: Channel 4 News/ Tuesday
The  media sent reporters to stand infront of a door to tell everyone that their hasn't been a baby yet  and repeat that about 10  minutes later.   The one thing that happens in coverage is that news likes to stick to coverage instead of also going to other things in the news.   CNN found the oddest way to cover a royal birth, they went to a birth.     But after the reveal and the name came out the coverage did , as it should, winded down.

Al Jazerra America  is set to launch in a few weeks, it's replacing Current TV ( which I was surprised to see was still doing it's live political programming ).  They have announced their new president  former ABC News executive Kate O' Brian.  The channel says they will be doing news 24/7 LIVE.    Most cable news channels  , give up the live  programming plot at 11PMET or 8pm for the west coast .  MSNBC goes into opinion programming starting around 3PMET (so no news there really)  , Fox News channel goes into opinion first at 5pmet going back to news at 6 and 7pmet ,then returning back to opinion after 8pmet.    The 24/7 strategy  makes wonder if they will be simulcasting AJ English at points in the day.  We used to have Channels that run news live 24/7 CNN used to and HLN (when it was Headline News) used to.  We will update you on them when they launch.
I do hope that Al Jazerra America won't go into tabloid , opinion, trails all day , junk that  CNN and many other US channels have gone into. Hopefully the keep that promise they won't.

How much do you care about Anthony Weiner?   Most of the national media seems to think you should care alot about him. The story is not as important unless  you live in New York City and will be voting in the election.  If a story is leading Inside Edition or Entertainment Tonight ... maybe the nightly news shouldn't lead with it?  CBS didn't lead with it, so it is possible to do.  The media loves it because of the sexting part and  his name it works well that way.

CNN's New Day : Review

CNN  Morning Shows

New Day CNN.jpg      CNN's much anticipated  new morning show  officially started yesterday, with it's hosts  former ABC News anchor and reporter, Chris Cuomo,  Kate Bolduan , and Michaela Pereira.  We decided to review the 2nd day ,to see if  any first  jitters would be less into account.  The Program starts with   the hosts telling you what's coming next , and a voice overs by James Earl Jones. The program starts in bright studio with brick like walls all 3 hosts are sitting together on  desk.  The first hour is mostly updating you on news stories , with some reporters doing reports live or taped.   Cuomo and Bolduan alternate the first few headlines then Pereira does the last few . Unlike "Today Show or Good Morning America" there is alot  more news content in the program .   Around 6:50 AMET  something happens that  either is for premiere week or a permanent feature , the program keeps on going  around 7AMET  it's introduced as being part of "30 Minutes of commercial free news " , that's an interesting feature the networks don't do or would even try to do.
In the 2nd hour they go more long form on the stories , talking with guests  and reporters about some select stories. The set has a couch on it  , though it's only used when doing lighter segments  for example when "Early Start" co-anchor John Berman joins the show at the bottom of each hour to share.  Unlike "Today" or "GMA" which de-camp to the couch after 7:30AMET.   The program ,as promised , doesn't have a cooking segment , or concerts that's more like "CBS This Morning " , sister morning show "Morning Express" or other CNN morning shows in the past.  The 3rd hour is close to the 2nd in style.
The program does have a news heavy agenda ,that CNN has been trying to enforce while at the same time they do fill in with lots of lighter stories.  The hosts seem like they like each other , hopefully they aren't faking .  It also has  good feel with some regular segments for business news , weather, and sports.  I think CNN has made some good ideas here and hopefully they keep that formula going.  It does look that they are keeping their promise of "not trying to reinvent the wheel" , since there not a lot of ways you can go with a morning show especially in this US TV market where there are so many of them .  The hosts  do work well with each other so far , I think that will be even more after they've been doing the show for awhile. It maybe because it's not an election year but the program doesn't seem to top loaded with politics , or any lighter stories though the mix could be improved a bit more , but that probably is dependent on what the news cycle is.
I say give it  try to see what you think , airs weekdays on CNN from 6-9AMET that's 3-6 AM PT , since it's  cable news.

Welcome back All My Children and One Life to live

SOAPS   TOLN

Here at Joshuaonline we've been writing posts about news of soaps being canceled and finales coming soon, we did for "One Life to Live" in January 2012  , we did for "All My Children" in September 2011  .   Soaps being canceled was a yearly report  from 2007-2011 pretty much as daytime  is being transfused into talk shows and other cheap (cost)  programming . "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" were also reported to be moving online back in 2011,though that seemed lost by mid-2012 we did get the official announcement .

So now today April 29th 2013, they are  both back  now online.
Here's how you can watch it    , on Hulu  you can watch on any  computer  here (All My Children) , (One Life To Live)  . If you have Hulu Plus you can watch on a mobile device  , and on a Roku ®  box .

You can watch the full episodes after the jump , they are 30 minutes now

The Flash Back : Disney Channel is 30 Now

 The Flashback

On this day in  1983 in television history , Disney's  network came on the air  Disney Channel or at the time called The Disney Channel , the "the" was removed in 1997.
as seen in the first logo  :

  video : youtube
When Disney Channel launched  it was  premium channel like  HBO, it ran  about 18 hours day  From 7AM-1AMET.    Meaning they would say good night at 1AMET  as seen in the video  below:
 Video
 video: youtube

Early programming  included programs like : "Welcome to Pooh Center". They also aired classic Disney shorts, movies including premire movies, as well as nature ,and other learning programs. The channel had a foucs on kids and their parents.

Later on the 80's  Disney Channel expanded to a full 24 hour  programming line up.  They launched  a program called  "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" in 1988 which wasn't popular but  became the launching pad for "Saved by The Bell" which has high cult fame.
Video
 video: youtube

It later added  a revival of "The Micky Mouse Club" later started growing in viewers and subscribers by  the 1990's . In 1997 ,changes  started coming as mentioned before the name was changed from "The Disney Channel"to "Disney Channel" , and it made  a move to basic cable.
Video
   video:youtube
They also started adding in breaks between shows , we say breaks since in essence they weren't advisement  they were mostly promotions for other Disney Channel shows or other Disney properties this still continues to this day.   They also started an increased amount of original programming , while still airing syndicated shows.
