This is personally one of my favorite Disney Channel Original series and that is So Weird , I thought it might be a fun idea to write about one of the episodes.
Background first, "So Weird" was a Disney Channel series that first premiered in 1999 and ran for 3 seasons. It's about a girl named Fiona Phillips , Fi for short, touring with her mother is who is a singer and her brother with her mother's manager, bus driver, and their son. The series was a paranormal series where Fi would encounter different paranormal things on her journey. It was slightly darker than other Disney Channel series before it or after it.
Today we are taking a look at episode 9 which is called "Rebecca".
Also we don't skip the theme of this show because the theme is awesome.
The episode starts with Fi (Cara DeLizia) voicing over on how there' s a long of history of people trying avoid death. With the question of "If we could live forever , would we want to?" Well, Disney Channel show went there. It starts with voices of some girl wanting to see someone but can't because other voices saying no. Fi's brother , Jack (played by Patrick Levis, who was also in Brink!) and his friend Clu (played by Erik von Detten, who was Brink in Brink!) are doing some driving test thing while Fi is on her computer.
The girl from before shows up wanting to see Molly, Fi and Jack's mother, (played by Mackenzie Phillips) who does show up and sees the girl and sees that she looks like someone she knew named Rebecca (title drop) and the girl says Rebecca is her mother, also the name from a song. The backstory is that Rebecca disappeared. Molly wants to see the girl, but she can't see her because reasons.
Fi feels that feels kind of strange. Since Rebecca's daughter said that her mother was that the museum working : Fi and Molly go the museum to see her and a guy mentions a Rebecca but referring to the girl they met. Fi, Clu, and Jack go searching for the young Rebecca (I think I'm confused) and they see her with some man and woman. Meanwhile, 1999 tech works and Fi asks for a picture of her mother and Rebecca for something.

The next morning, Fi and Clu went out somewhere. Molly talks to Jack about why Rebecca was a special friend and talks about how one day Rebbecca just disappears. In the context of the show also, Fi's father has been dead and Fi has been looking for a way to communicate with him. That's something that works together in the first season. Fi and Clu go to see Rebecca who only lets in Fi (poor Clu) and yes Rebecca is actually Rebecca not Rebecca's daughter Rebecca.(why would you write that?) Rebecca has been around a long time, it takes about 100 years for Rebecca to age 1 year (that would be a long time to be a baby) , the girl is 1300 years old. Rebecca has been keeping tabs on Molly. (like a stalker)
Rebecca's family moves around to make sure people don't get suspicious of why these people haven't aged or died. (what?) Also, a mention of being burned at stake . (This isn't a light Disney Channel late 2000's comedy) While Fi was amazed because Rebecca has seen so much she's not because well it's annoying life and even speaks in Etruscan (obscure) and says that her mother lived there as a little girl. (People joke their parents are ancient, well not as ancient as this one *laugh track*)
Rebecca promises to be there at 5pm , Molly wants Fi to take her because she says Becca isn't coming. (probably true) The girl doesn't show up so, they go to the house from earlier and guess who's gone? (Mallory?) Molly practices her singing and sings her song "Rebecca" (how many times do I have type this name?) This shows us what happened when they cut where the house was empty. (People who age slowly go quickly) There's a video of Molly looking for Rebecca as a kid and seeing she left. (Darn this is sad) Rebecca shows up and lurks behind while the song is going. The girl doesn't say anything she walks away before anyone sees her and the end.
The episode's main question was if you could live forever would you want to? Rebecca and her family's life is a miserable state of never being able to stay in one spot , have friends, a normal life, and be able to continue in the way many people enjoy life. Rebecca makes a friend and then has to leave as to not cause suspicion. Molly's life was affected by that because she doesn't know why the girl left in the first place. Molly, as mentioned in the episode, deals with loss with also the death of her husband many years before. Again, that death being a key center point of the show's main background plot. She's restarting her music career, something she did with her husband, and the family is still impacted by the sense of loss. This is a heart breaking episode because of the situation both parties are put into.
Maybe they could have told Molly, Rebecca did tell Fi, but Rebecca (and probably her family) feels that would complicate things more than make any sense of Closure happen. It's an episode that makes it's viewer think about it for awhile. The idea of living forever seems like fun, with Fi mentioning all the things Rebecca might have seen. Think about it , the American Revolution, The Civil War, the first time "The Black Hole" came out in theaters. Rebecca mentions how her mother was around during the Etruscans and how her friend is now just bones you could find buried under ground and maybe in a museum being studied. It would be hard to have long friendships because of the other person's mortality they die and you're alone. (I do wonder where the father comes from and are there a bunch of live forever people around?)
It's a good episode and they did something without a happy ending at all , a brave show for a children's media program to have not tried a happy ending. I like the hints in the episode as well with Rebecca helping a museum know details they are trying to figure out and everything. Also nice touch on having the girl have one of the more longest lasting names. This is a good episode. We may venture more into "So Weird".
As of this writing the show is on Disney's Streaming Service , Disney Plus. (They didn't pay us, I wish) That's it for now, tune in next time when we take my hand, don't fear the reaper.
