Opinion: A story about CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

Straight Forward  TV  CBS  Katie Couric Opinion

Yesterday , CBS announced that "60 minutes" correspondent, Scott Pelley will take over for Katie Couric on the "CBS Evening News" this summer.
Katie Couric took over with fanfare in Fall of 2006 , she was labeled the first woman solo permanent anchor of a US network's evening newscast on a weeknight.  She was changing from NBC'S Today show to the big evening news on CBS.
CBS Evening News has been in third place for years and years. It is hard to bring a show from 3rd to 1st. CBS was in problems after Dan Rather was forced down by the network.
Ms.Couric had things working against her from the start. First of, she was going to a 3rd place newscast with high expectations. NBC was stable at the time and still is at number 1, ABC was going through the post Jennings era and the bad hand of what happened to Bob Woodruff. ABC acted calm throughout their ordeal and found Gibson to be a fit.
The problem that media was saying was how do you transfer someone from mornings to evenings? That was a dumb question. Tom Brokaw  did it  he was a Today Show host once,  Gibson did it,  Sawyer did it. So that wasn't the problem at all. The Evening network newscasts are falling in ratings because there is a news saturation of cable news channels who repeat the same stories all day,and the interent. Why wait till 6:30pmet/5:30ct to get the news when my local news has expanded to be on 2 hours before it? The Internet right now?  CBS did try to soften the evening news with Katie Couric there, not her fault it was management's fault.  CBSNews is not doing as well in ratings their mornings have struggled from the start (except Sunday).   Couric, I fell wanted to connect with people more  like she did on the Today show and the Evening News would not allow that.  So Katie Couric wanting to leave to do something she would pefer to do, Scott Pelley is a good choice. Couric also had the trouble of adjusting to a new network, from NBC to CBS, she had to get to their style in a few months. The Press running up to her was on high expectations  expecting her to make the CBS Evening News move from 3rd to 1st in a day, which was not going to happen.
