NBC Thanksgiving Christmas New Year

NBC is ready to round out the year with a bang.  NBC's Thanksgiving to New Year include the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, "Christmas at Rockefeller Center", "The National Dog Show" and "The Grinch" all return as NBC staples.

Leaving CBS, are two classic Rankin-Bass specials.  "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"  returns to NBC after leaving the network after the 1971 year, where the special will be celebrating its 60th anniversary.  NBC will air the special on the anniversary date of it's premiere from 1964. On December 6 with a 75 minute broadcast.   Also joining the network for the first time also moving from CBS is "Frosty the Snowman" which turns 55 this year it will premiere on December 5.

CBS Announces Holiday Programming 2024

CBS  Thanksgiving  Christmas  New Year

CBS has released holiday programming schedule for this year leading from Thanksgiving all the way to New Year.

There's also something of note this year,  CBS, for the first time since 1972, will not be airing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and for the first time ever since it premiered, will not be airing Frosty the Snowman.  This is pretty interesting as both specials have big anniversaries this year with Rudolph turning 60 and Frosty turning 55.  They will be moving to NBC, who's parent company owns the rights to these specials.  Freeform, the cable network, will still air these specials to, it's not a Peanuts moving to streaming situation here.

That also means, sadly- to me, that CBS will not be airing "Frosty Returns" and it also seems that  "The Story of Santa Claus" will not be airing meaning that CBS won't be airing it for the 2nd year in a row, it might be done at CBS.  Kind of a shame there.

Here's what they do have.   Here's the full line up all times in ET/PT unless otherwise noted.

Rudolph's Shiny New Year

New Years   The Flashback

In some room somewhere they at Rankin Bass thought that their Rudolph special  needed a sequel and  for a different network than where that one was airing.  First airing on December 10, 1976 on ABC (whilst original Rudolph aired on NBC and later CBS) "Rudolph's Shiny New Year" takes the idea that Rudolph now has to save the New Year because we need to have new years or something.

New Year's as  a holiday isn't really a big marketed thing, I mean in the way Christmas is, plus mostly it's just a trend of time and it happens right after Christmas. It's not the most fun of holidays anyway. That's right I said it.

I've made the statement before that Rankin Bass seemed to like the idea of taking Christmas songs and going "Hey Let's make that a special" and then try to wrap a story around that. It's creative, but it's also creative to see what they do with they don't.  I think "Rudolph's Shiny New Year" is their most original Christmas special since they really had no source material to work from except Rudolph existing.

So how does a New Year's special with Rudolph work?  They do take a creative (again this is another Rankin-Bass special written by Romeo Muller) idea of the concept of baby new year.  Baby New Year is a classic personification of  the time.  A new fresh year, rebrith-- birth--- baby.

Santa starts off the special and this one apparently takes place just after the famous Rudolph story The Santa in this special looks like the same model they used for "The Year Without A Santa Claus" but uses Rankin Bass go to -Paul Frees- as his voice. The Rudolph model is different too, but again it was about 12 years after the first special.   The special is voiced by Red Skelton, the famous entertainer, he voices the character of Father time, which also fits well for our New Year special here. This is Red Skelton after networks were cutting back on classic stars from the radio and early days of television because they wanted newer younger viewers.  He does fit with Rankin Bass using classic well-known performers to their  thing, and he does it well.
I don't control Daylight Saving time, you dummies made that/ Copyright Warner

The story starts where Santa gets a letter from Father Time because the Happy, the baby New Year is missing. Apparently, if the baby is missing we will live in a loop of December 31st forever. (That doesn't sound too bad)  To raise the stakes, there's an awful snowstorm still, so enter Rudolph. That's the stakes, Rudolph has 6 days to find the baby or else. (What happens if he finds the baby later, couldn't that still, and what?)
What? I didn't run that traffic light? / Copyright Warner

I do find the concept very creative, the baby New Year being the quest for Rudolph to find him. Father Time's world is a neat thing too, he has a clock work set up and shows him taking care of time. (not Life magazine)  I do find it interesting he has a scythe, like a grim reaper.  There's General Ticker who is a clock work solider, there's a whale named Big Ben, and a clock on his tail. A clock based camel as well.  Much like the first special, Rudolph gets some fun characters to work off of with.

There's Eon , a vulture, who doesn't want the baby to be found and brought back to Father Time because he's gonna die. That's not a joke of mine, they outright say that Eon can live until he's one eon old and turn into ice and snow, so death. (I looked how much an Eon is and apparently he lived a billion years?)  I think it's kind of a justifiable reason to not having something happen where he dies. That's an interesting character motivation for a villain.  (Also kind of dark that Rudolph's goal means that death of Eon has to happen)
Of any villain he has a good reason / Copyright Warner

More concept stuff is that it explains what happens when the years switch, well through the year the baby New Year ages( I also love the song used when Father Time explains it) it then hands its crown to the next year.  The special explains later that old years go to their own islands and this is the special I learned the  term archipelago from as a kid. So there are islands where it's 1965 , for example, and it's always that year. (Don't go to 2001 or 2020 island) Through the special you'll meet some of the old New Years. I'll get to them in a minute.

Why did Happy leave? Well unlike his name, he wasn't very happy, he has big ears. When people saw him they laughed because big ears are funny or something. He ran away. This special does take Rudolph's story where he was maligned for being a misfit and he understands Happy's problem. So, again he has to find Happy before Eon and before midnight December 31st.
He's not very happy/ Copyright Warner

It's a Lookback, Charlie Brown: For Auld Lang Syne

Peanuts

When started the Peanuts posts here on this site, there were 45 specials in all, the most recent of those was from 2011, that being  "Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown"   The 2010's by happenstance ended up being the first decade where there was only 1 new Peanuts special since the things started in the 1960's.

Most of the post Schulz death specials take a plot  or vignettes from the strips and purpose them into specials. Which wasn't a new thing, that happened after his death, but it seemed to be the way to go after his death.  In the 2010's there was a slight dry up of Peanuts media, not  a drought though.  There was a French shorts series called "Peanuts", that also ran on Cartoon Network/Boomerang in the US, there was some graphics novels, and even a movie.

Now of the 45 specials only a few had reruns by 2019, those being The Christmas one, the shorts Christmas one made to fill time because ABC wants more ads, The Great Pumpkin, Thanksgiving, an episode of "This is America Charlie Brown", You're Not Elected, I Want a Dog, New Year, She's a Good Skate. Be My Valentine, and A Charlie Brown Valentine. The Easter Beagle stopped running in 2014, because I guess Disney ABC just didn't care, that also meant they didn't run either , Lucy Must be Traded or Charlie Brown's All Stars any more anyway.

In speaking of ABC, they did renew rights, after their initial pick up from CBS in 2000, and that contract was up in 2020.  The Streaming is the future folks decided to swerve and cause chaos, but before that some changes happened with Peanuts.  In 2010, United-Media owned 80 percent of Peanuts sold that to Iconix Brand Group, the Schulz Family still had 20 percent.  In 2017, Canada's DHX bought Iconix's stake  and this (as WildBrian ) is who co-owns Peanuts currently. They decided to jump into making Peanuts media quickly. They decided to work with new streaming service , in the great  streaming race, with Apple's Apple TV plus, which is the  one with that might not have alot of people using it.

Wildbrain made two series "Snoopy in Space" and "The Snoopy Show" for the streaming service, so far. They are doing that thing were they want to milk using Snoopy as  a centerpiece even though Peanuts has always been more about the people than Snoopy, but corporation gonna be corporate. In a more sad decision (though some will say, it's the future, and  that's where I walk away muttering under my breath) they decided to abandon normal television to have Peanuts specials , the holiday ones mostly,  stream on Apple TV Plus (I'm sure their subscriber was happy)  after running on  a broadcast network of some sort since 1965.   It's not really the future, it's that a desperate Apple had money to splash hoping that people would chose them for to be another streaming service they have to contend with.   This is did cause some backlash so Apple decided to go to PBS , to help them out  and run the fall/winter holiday specials at least once.

In this deal, they made a new special  and I don't like the title : "Snoopy Presents : For Auld Lang Syne"  the thing that bugs me is the name being that way. Snoopy Presents, instead of the conventional  like "For Auld Lang Syne, Charlie Brown"  or  "A Charlie Brown Auld Lang Syne" or "Charlie  Brown's  Auld Lang Syne"  the focus on Snoopy and his name as the brand is slightly tedious and annoying to me, I'm mostly writing this to say I don't like it as some one who loves Peanuts and even knows why the specials don't use Peanuts in the titles.   It's also annoying for consistency reasons where 45 specials use  some variation of  same title structure and number 46 just walks up here  and messes up things. I'm not going to use my distaste for the title though to take away from anything about the special itself. From 2021, this  is "Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne" (the only time I will call it this in this post)

The animation style is  pretty nice, I'm glad it's full 2D and not 3D CGI, but looks like the budget was increased from the 2000's days (The blanket one from 2011 had nice animation)  The backgrounds are nice and feel like Peanuts.

Snowy day/ Copyright Peanuts

This special is going to be focused on Lucy, it's not the first time a Peanuts special focused on not Charlie Brown, especially if you've read my past  Peanuts posts. Lucy is happy that her Grandma is coming soon, this is the famous blanket hating grandma. Also we get a "Citizen Cane" mention.  Snoopy's brothers and his sister come over to the Brown house for their own fun with Snoopy.

The answer is Rosebud/Copyright Peanuts

Charlie Brown is feeling down that he didn't do well on his resolutions that past year. (I  mean, most people don't care about their resolutions after February so...)    The first 6   minutes are really setting up things  and maybe some Peanuts Easter eggs like they are trying to make sure they remember Peanuts' biggest hits. (I would do the same , but do 80's and 90's strip deep cut references), then on Christmas Eve and Lucy gets a phone call and gets news from Grandma that she's not coming.
It's like a cheap game where you dress up a still Lucy/Copyright Peanuts

Like the Peanuts Movie, using that as a comparison since this is new story instead of ripped from the comics, they use more famous 60's- early 80's designs of the characters (so girls not Peppermint Patty in dresses) the phone is rotary not even push button, etc.
