Cable News in 2011 review

2011 cable news TV
The year 2011 is now heading out the door   , we take a look back at what the cable news media was like this year.
Over Coverage of  Casey Anthony   Not, saying that we think the media shouldn't have covered it  in  heavy excess. HLN (Formally Headline news until 2008) , a CNN sister network, had extensive trail coverage during the trail and coverage of the trail itself. It was LIVE brodacasting on weekends , when they never do it on a normal weekend ,  no matter what breaking news happens. Some could say it was do to the slow news time of summer , but there is a way the cable news channels could have covered it.

Lean Left and Lean Right  Cable news is slowly loosing the news part of the term. MSNBC (owned by NBC NEWS) suffered a small blow to it's line up when Keith Olbermann left , but since 2008  the channel was adding more and more liberal opinion , they say is a counter to a Conservative FOXNEWS Channel . Though unlike FOX NEWS Channel , MSNBC has more opinion programming , as of December 2011  on weekdays they have a total of  6 hours of news with out opinion , though 2 of those hours are more devoted to politics FOX NEWS Channel's primetime stayed at number one, and MSNBC faulting but still taking second. This hurt CNN who trying to stay out of the left /right show thing.
2012 elections are sure to bring more of this out , and opinion shows aren't leaving because people are watching them. Some network executives have said that people aren't turning to cable news for news anymore, they already know the news.

CBS' New try at mornings : Coming Soon

CBS  TV
By Skyler M for mychiller media and TV
CBS NEWS  has been in the process of change with it's morning show hours . "The Early show" , which started November 1st  1999 , has been in 3rd place from the stop. Behind NBC's "Today Show" and ABC'S "Good Morning America". This year the "Early Show" changed to anchors Erica Hill and Chris Wragge. In the summer the show changed formats removing the  cooking, the celerity news and other so-called fluff. Last month, CBS announced the "The Early Show", CBS's 8th try at a morning show and one of the longest running" will end in January. For a new morning show, which got it's name today "CBS This Morning" hosted by Erica Hill , who is the lone-carry over,  PBS' Charlie Rose who will also still do his talk show, and Gayle King , who left her Oprah Network and radio show around the announcement.

Good Bye "All My Children'

TV Daytime  All MyChildren 1971-2011
Now  another soap hits the dust and another nail in the  coffin in what daytime television used to be.  Yes soaps have quickly been killed of network television since 2007.
NBC expanded the "Today Show" for a fourth hour to create a talk but to make local stations happy they ended "Passions". In 2009 CBS ended "Guiding Light" after over 70 years and replaced it with a new version of "Let's make a deal" at least it wasn't a talk show. In 2010 CBS ended "As the World Turns" and replaced it with a talk show called "The Talk" (real creative CBS). Let's admit the networks find it cheaper to make a talk show or a game show than a soap, plus soaps may have began repeating plot lines but I think that the soap was  a great treasuere to our TV sets.  A  TV series that come on every weekday and continuing a plot from the day before.  You didn't get that in prime time , without waiting a week. ABC will replace "All My Children"  before it had a  chance to turn 42. How many other shows can you say lasted 40 years or even 70 , except for news shows and some talks shows, and the "Price is right".
But to make this short we say good bye to "All My Children". And maybe your second life online could make you go on longer.

Children's programming on network tv

Opinion  a theory
By Earl M for mychiller tv and media
I read a story about ABC this fall will replace it's corporate parent's Disney block  on Saturday Mornings with  a block of programming called ABC's Weekend Adventure which will be programmed by Litton  Entertainment.    Network children's programming I say died back in 2003. The Government passed the Children's Television Act  in 1990  and was made worse in 1996. The Government mandated that brodacast networks air 3 hours of children's programming that was considered Educational and Informational and also cut back on how many commercials  a commercial  station can air.

Olberman's Return

 Media
By Skyler of mychiller
MSNBC's Current TV's Keith Olbermann  returned to TV he's now doing a new show , or could you say a  continuance of his show "Coutdown With Keith Olbermann" returned to the air after Olbermann left  msnbc in January. He noticeably had a new tune to his show  he now has a embraced anti-corperate style working off of Current TV not being owned by a major corporation. He still has his opinions and not liking of FOX NEWS and  Conservatives.  The show debuted in a new studio in Newyork the theme was the same of his msnbc show just alot more upbeat. "Coutdown's" style though was pretty much kept though not the numbers as much.  You watch some parts after the jump.

Why OWN : the Oprah Winfrey network isn't doing well

Opinion  by Samuel Jacobs for mychiller media
OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network , launched on January 1st this year. It had hype and tons of love for it. That has not made ratings. Discovery , which owns 50% of the channel including the space it inhabits on your TV had a channel before called Discovery Health which was used to be the starting spot for OWN, but it's ratings have been down from when it was Health.  I can't help ask why is the network not doing well? There's no Oprah! Hold on a second what was the best show on the network? It was a show about Oprah's show.  Oprah is not her own network alot , she's on her magazine more.  Oprah fans like Oprah , yes they'll read books and products she recommends.

Opinion: A story about CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

Straight Forward  TV  CBS  Katie Couric Opinion
#JoshuaOnline  By Daniel for mychiller's media news
Yesterday , CBS announced that "60 minutes" correspondent, Scott Pelley will take over for Katie Couric on the "CBS Evening News" this summer.
Katie Couric took over with fanfare in Fall of 2006 , she was labeled the first woman solo permanent anchor of a US network's evening newscast on a weeknight.  She was changing from NBC'S Today show to the big evening news on CBS.
CBS Evening News has been in third place for years and years. It is hard to bring a show from 3rd to 1st. CBS was in problems after Dan Rather was forced down by the network.
Ms.Couric had things working against her from the start. First of, she was going to a 3rd place newscast with high expectations. NBC was stable at the time and still is at number 1, ABC was going through the post Jennings era and the bad hand of what happened to Bob Woodruff. ABC acted calm throughout their ordeal and found Gibson to be a fit.

Have The Evening newscasts has lost their purpose?

      Opinion By Skyler of mychiller
The news that Katie Couric leaving the 'CBS Evening News' after her contract expires in June , makes us think about the future of the national network newscasts.   Those 6:30/5:30c newscasts that only live in those 2 timezones have been losing an audience for the past few years. They are mostly the name just different graphics ,reporters, anchors and studios.  Why watch the evening news , when  your local news and cable news can do at more convenient times and live.   Though the appeal of the evening news has also faced an audience shift  the people who started watching it a long time ago , still are. It's hard to catch a new audience with younger people and with more people not on the east and central time zone part of our nation who wants. FOX, CW, and other local affiliated and independent stations have started local newscasts at the same time as the network newscasts.

TV this week's headlines : Let's play who's leaving?

  by Skyler of mychiller
Let's see  CBS NEWS's Katie Couric is leaving the CBS Evening news she announced about 5 years to the day she announced she was going to the CBS Evening News. The 3rd place newscast didn't raise past it. She may go to daytime TV.  She as you may remember replaced Dan Rather.  We don't know yet who will replace her on the newscast.
Meanwhile the person who replace Ms.Couric  on the 'Today Show' ,Meredith Vieira  may be leaving this year the speculation came around the same time NBC announced she's leaving ABC'S the View to join them.
Matt Lauer also may leave the Today Show when his contract is up in 2012 as that speculation came out.  Meredith and Matt's stories are both speculation and not confirmed or denied.

Mark's Media Report Card Sunday March 27th 2011

By Mark C for Mychiller Media
MEDIA

How did the media do this week in their coverage of stories? Here's  a look at  this.
United States and other Countries "No Fly Zone" on Libya : How did the media cover this? Well to say awful is the last of their worries. It looks like we have a D- as our grade . They started of on last Saturday calling this everything but a war, unless your CNN ,then it was called Libya War. They weren't even skeptical of the whole thing until Monday. It took them until Tuesday to cover why the heck we are in there at all , we have no interests in Libya meaning no oil.  Shame on you media you're lucky you didn't get an F.

Opinion: Time to change public Brodcasting in the United States

There has been talks to stop the government portion of funding to NPR and PBS.It's small portion they are worried about, though independents do fine with out the funding. They rely on people to give them money from the public. They have those annoying sponsorship drives. Now let's compare America's public broadcasting to Britain. The BBC to be exact.  The BBC is better than PBS and NPR. Why? because they give you options of choice. BBC TV has great programming on it's many channels , great entertainment options that our PBS doesn't have , many PBS stations air BBC classic. I would rather watch the BBC over PBS  they have a great news department that our PBS lacks.  How does the BBC get money?  They are paid from taxes.  BBC , much like the commercial British Broadcasters , allows you to watch their channels stream online  LIVE . One question many people answer about PBS is that they are boring.

TO CBS: don't replace Sheen end the show.

Opinion :  written by Carrie  A. a mychiller Contributor
Charlie sheen was fired by CBS and Time Warner from the show 'Two and Half  Men' and now talks about who will replace him. No don't replace him! End the show!, No why should they replace him on the show.  I understand about the other actors who did nothing wrong, but  why are people talking about doing something impossible. This show was bulit around Sheen and Cryer , who plays the brother, and Charile was the character for Sheen. Many fans of the show will probably not attach to a new actor. Maybe it's a sign to let the show end that it's run it's course a lot of shows do so, like 'Friends' did, and 'Will and grace'. Many shows run their course. The show is in syndication and will live there for a long time.     Nothing against anyone, I watched the show, but I think it's time for the show to end and the story to  go away.

NBC'S golf coverage gets a new name

 TV WATCH
       Robert M.  a mychiller contributor.
Comcast owns the Golf Channel  , NBC has golf coverage too, Comcast owns NBC now. NBC's golf coverage has been renamed "GolfChannel on NBC" kind of like , when ESPN (owned by Disney) and ABC (owned by Disney) renamed ABCSports to ESPN on ABC in 2006. NBC Sports is not being renamed anything , at least at this time. So it's not CSN on NBC or Versus on NBC  ,but will tell you if they do. Meanwhile CNBC has been doing business updates on Golf channel during the mornings.

The Media Opinion : The Tuscon shootings and the media

By Robberta S.  for mychiller
The events of Saturday, January 8th in Tuscon  where the shooting suspect, Jared Loughner, 22, is accused of assassinate , Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords , murdering 6 others , and wounding 14 more. The media took this a whole other direction. Right after the shooting , the sheriff blamed talk radio and "certain" tv hosts. The media took advantage of this.
