It Was Not Your Network, It was My Network, My Network TV

My Network TV

January 2006.  The start of the year meant a new company had kind of just popped in the media world. That being, Viacom.  That's a weird thing to say, but in 2005, Viacom and CBS broke up, a marriage they felt was a failure. (They still had the same arching major shareholder though.)  CBS Corp was the old Viacom, the new Viacom took the cable assets.  There's one asset that was created by the old Viacom, that would be UPN.  UPN had turned turned 10 in 2005, it made it!

UPN had a competitor, the WB network, owned primarily by Time Warner.  In the world of pie (stay with me)  network TV was 6 major slices. (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, UPN, the WB) But now let's pretend that pie wasn't cut in equal shares, because it's not, and some have the bigger slices. (ABC, CBS,NBC, and even FOX) So two have to fight over the remaining smaller slices, well, why not combine two smaller pieces into one bigger piece. (This analogy is weird.)   That was the idea of the announcement on January 24, 2006.  CBS and Warner announced that they were shutting down their networks and working together on a new network called The CW (CBS -Warner)  The media called it a merger but it was more a combing of resources and making a subsidiary company/network.

The idea was that UPN and WB were fighting each other, plus cable, plus other broadcast networks, so instead of fighting each other they join together like a World War and fight the others.  Then, it became a gym class, where shows with the better perceived strength would get line up and the rest would be cast into the sea of sadness. Also the stronger stations , since WB and UPN, in most markets were on two different stations, why not put your network on the stronger station? (There's more that soon)  I grew up in an area that had no CW station on broadcast TV, it was piped in on cable from the nearby city (Denver), we had a UPN station that launched in 1999.  (KXTU)  The CW ended up on that UPN station meaning the people without cable could now watch the final season of "7th Heaven". (oh)

Let's go back to the WB, back when it launched, Warner didn't own any broadcast stations at all. Most networks have a core of stations owned by themselves, (Owned and Operated Stations or O&O's) Viacom and Chris Craft had this for UPN in the early days (more on that soon). Most networks have owned stations in the top major markets: New York , Los Angeles, and Chicago. This is a heritage thing but also a core for the biggest audiences of the three biggest time zones in the US.  The WB had to make an agreement with Tribune Broadcasting to distribute their network on their stations which included : WPIX-11 New York, KTLA-5 Los Angeles,  and WGN -9 Chicago, plus other stations.   They were the key stations for the WB. WGN's cable feed aired WB from 1995-1999 for those that didn't have a station.   Meanwhile, UPN didn't have that problem at the start.  In New York and LA Chris Craft owned WWOR- AND KCOP ,plus few other stations, but Viacom, the other UPN parent company owned stations  as well.

In 1999, Viacom wanted to own CBS, after that , thanks to new rules where you have duopolies (two stations owned by the same company in the same market) in many markets with other rules applied. Viacom also made an ultimatum with Chris Craft: Buy UPN fully or sell it to us.  Chris Craft decided to sue and try and stop the Viacom purchase of CBS. This didn't work.  C.C couldn't find someone who wanted to run UPN with them so they sold to Viacom. But wait the stations? C.C owned those and found a different buyer: FOX.

Either C.C wasn't intentionally going to sell them, Viacom didn't think to buy them, or this was a power spite move they sold these stations like KCOP, WWOR, KUTP (but not KTVX or KMOL) to FOX  (Viacom did end up getting what is now KBCW-TV, so? Victory?)  This means that a company that owns a broadcast network owns affiliates of a network owned by someone else. (FOX later also bought WPWR-TV in Chicago from Newsweb, this was also a UPN station). By default, the largest owned station in UPN from the parent company was market 4, Philadelphia's  WPSG-TV.

Any speculation that FOX would just up and kill UPN's reach did not happen. In 2003, they renewed the contract with UPN for 4 more years (source)   which math is a sign here.

This is the story of My Network TV. When the CW was announced an automatic agreement with Tribune landed the top 3 markets plus many others (like Denver)  to a 10-year agreement with the CW.(Bold to assume that 10 years later the CW would exist, I mean yeah it did but, bold)  This meant that the CW while, not owning their own stations in these markets did have some stable footing for 10 years.  In markets where CBS owned the UPN station they ended up with the CW, except in Boston and Miami, while Tribune's WB stations ended up with the CW, except in Philadelphia and  Seattle.   Hold on, what about FOX?  Apparently, that 4 year agreement with UPN could be voided if no UPN existed (guy taps forehead).  They were left out in the cold.  FOX took this not well. Most of the FOX UPN stations were branded as UPN Number and maybe UPN (City name)  like WWOR was UPN 9. Quickly FOX removed all references to UPN on their stations WWOR's logo was cut to a "9" the UPN box removed.  UPN was dead to them.

It wasn't just UPN stations owned by FOX many UPN and WB around the country were going to be left network-less. The idea was maybe they would go back to be indepdent stations. (KTXA in Dallas actually did)  FOX had another idea.

February 22, 2006.  My Network TV. The name is kind of stupid, but can't throw stones at it too much.  Around this time, Myspace had taken off as a big social media site and Newscorp (then owners of FOX) had bought it. This network's name is from that idea, maybe.  ( https://www.nexttv.com/news/news-corp-unveils-my-network-tv-78935)   Makes it feel personal, like hey look CBS isn't your network, we are?! Don't  touch!

So, you got you a network? That doesn't impress me much, you have to air stuff.  They were going to use UPN's 10 hours, 2 hours a night, 5 nights a week format then add one  more night for Saturday. (The former UPN stations  would lose a weekend night of couple hour's syndication, while the former WB stations would be getting Sunday night back in exchange)  It doesn't seem FOX just randomly got mad that the CW was announced and also iced them out, because they had plans for syndication version of English language telenovelas.

Paul Buccieri,  the head of Twentith television (the then FOX owned syndication studio) thought that maybe audiences wanted soap programming but telenovela styled formats but in English for those who might not speak Spanish.  This is around the same era where a new network soap hadn't been launched since 1999. The idea was to syndicate them which was bold one, as first-run scripted shows on syndication as a market were wavering and especially programming that would require stations to clear 1 hour of time to air them.

My Network TV on Tubi TV

My Network TV

This is  a blog post, I don't think anyone else will do in entire society, that means we get the monopoly on the most niche thing ever.   I found out by looking around that the free, ad supported, streaming service that was purchased by FOX earlier this year.  My Network TV is also owned by FOX. (Math!)

My Network TV's original plan was "Oh Crap UPN is shutting down, and we need stuff for these random stations in major markets, we need to do something!" Then decided that the best idea was to be Telemundo but in English and make English telenovelas with shows that were going to be in the syndication market and air them five nights a week on your local station that would use a finny name like My20.

MY 20! It' s my station! Mine (they don't even use this logo anymore, they gave up years ago)

They had the original plan of every 3 months they would cycle in 2 new telenovelas, each one running 65 episodes. (Syndication!)   This plan lasted until like March 2007. (They gave up too easily, like cowards!) They didn't even let the cycle 3 shows finish!

After that, My Network TV gave up and withered and still exists as  our yearly posts of their fall line up of shows you can find on Ion and USA show you. They're older shows never really ended up anywhere, as much. ( They did put like one show on Hulu)

I assumed that Disney owned the shows currently because of them ending up with 20th Television in the FOX fire sale. The parts of FOX that aren't owned of Disney, like Fox Network and My Network, bought this random streaming service called Tubi.  I remember them for a few years, they seem like one of those places that stream the stuff but not legally, but in fact are legal and have ads! (Good thing they aren't paying us, that was awful promo work)

I did wonder if Disney was going to put these shows somewhere, because tens of people would like to know the status of obscure series that ran on a network, most don't even know exists. I was looking through Tubi, because is a nice service, has some things that are interesting and is free!  I found they added 4 of the 6 My Network TV telenovelas.

       Desire (September-December 2006)
   As Tubi describes as :

Two brothers who get run out of town because of their passions end up in a love triangle that brings murder, betrayal and lust to a flashpoint.

That sounds fun!  It was based off a Columbian show and has a Sheryl Crow theme song!

       Fashion House (September-December 2006)

Sadly, it's not sitcom about a family of Fashion conscious people getting into weird situations.

Tubi says:

A fashion industry titan protects her company and reputation from her ruthlessly ambitious rival who will do whatever it takes to win.

It stars  Bo Derek and Morgan Fairchild, and is based off a Cuban series

Wicked Wicked Games (December 2006- March 2007)
  Tubi says

A woman whose husband left her for another woman with wealth 25 years ago plots her revenge to take him down in a way he won't soon forget.

That sounds hard to stretch out over 65 days but if  daytime soaps can do it, this show can.  It starts Tatum O' Neal.

Someone on Wikipedia was hoping for something with this line

It focuses on a bitter, obsessed woman's vendetta against her former lover. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has not announced plans to release this series on DVD and/or Blu-ray.

Watch over Me (December 2006- March 2007)

Tubi says

A young bodyguard working for a ruthless industrialist gets involved with people in the unscrupulous business of researching biological viruses.

What?

Like I said,  they only have 4 of the 6 My Network TV telenovelas. Someone needs to release the series (including the un aired episodes) of "American Heiress"  and "Saints and Sinners" get on that!

You can check out these 4 if you are curious (this is news not really a recommendation)  on Tubi for free.  On the app available on almost everything, you go to the channels section and select FOX.  If you on computer, the links in this blog post will take you there.

       That's it for now!

Update 4/13/2021:

Previously, when I wrote this post, they only 4 of the 6 series , well now they have all 6! That's right they've added the spring 2007  and final two telenovela series.

American Heiress  (March to June 2007)

   Tubi describes the show

A rich debutant struggles to survive after a plane crash in the Guatemalan jungle, while her cruel brother at home tries to seize the family empire.

A note about this series: they gave up on the 13-week 5 day a week programming schedule  and went weekly but after week 13, they just gave up and left about 39 episodes un aired. (ooops)  Tubi, as of this writing, has 54 episodes.  Not sure why don't have episodes 55-65, but this is more than what  aired on US TV, so maybe they'll add the rest, get on that!

     Saints and Sinners

      Someone on Wikipedia describes this

This modern-day Romeo-and-Juliet story revolves around two Miami Beach families – the Capshaws and the Martins – who are plagued by a long, bitter rivalry. Julia Capshaw (Tyler Kain) falls is in love with Roman Martin (Scott Bailey), the man accused of killing her father. They find themselves caught between their feuding hotel-owner families, who will stop at nothing to succeed.

A note about this series,  they also ended after 13 weeks and only 13 episodes aired . Tubi has up to 50 so 51-65 are missing.

This is a a development though and a surprising one.   Now, that's it for now!

CW and Tribune renew affiliation agreement (with one exception)

TV NEWS

After much wondering and probably some wrangling  Tribune Media, one the larger owners of CW affiliates has renewed their deal with the network this means KTLA 5 Los Angeles,  KWGN 2 Denver,KDAF 33 Dallas, WPIX 11 New York, KIAH 39 Houston, WCCT 20 Hartford, WDCW 50 Washington DC , WSFL 39 South Florida, WNOL 38 New Orelans , WGNT 27 Hampton Roads, KPLR 11 Saint  Louis, KRCW 32 Portland,OR,  will remain with the CW.  Tribune's former deal was made at the launch of the CW in 2006.  The one change is WGN-TV in Chicago which will be leaving the network on September 1st.  It is moving to Fox  owned WPWR -50 , which is currently a My Network TV station (My Network TV is also owned by FOX).

WGN-TV says they will focus on their sports commitments  which includes rights to games from Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox , Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Blackhawks.   Due to CW  agreements they couldn't air as much Cran's Chicago Business Reports.   This could also be a boost to the low rated Chicago Station, WPWR-TV, to air the CW programs as a way to gain viewers. The MyNetwork TV programming will most likely be moved to another time slot.

This will be the first time since 1995, WGN-TV will not be affiliated with a network , WPWR was affiliated with  UPN from 1995 to 2006 , when CBS (owners of the UPN) and Time Warner (owners of The WB along with Tribune) decided to merge their operations and create the CW.

Joshuaonline 10's :The CW and TV's 2006 change

2016 marks our 10th birthday of Joshuaonline , when the site started it wasn't focused on TV and Media we eventually went that direction and refined what we cover and talk about , another thing is our record of early blog posts is missing because of quite bad early days of not understanding how posting works.  Anyway, will be taking a look at Television stories that were big over the past 10 years  starting with 2006.

If Joshuaonline was around in 1995, first off we would be 20 , we also would be looking at the launch of the WB and and UPN.  The Concept of Independent stations , ones that if you were  a kid in the 60's-80's  were the ones the maybe had those  movies , cartoons and sitcoms reruns without those pesky ABC,CBS,NBC clutter. They were places you could watch children's shows on the afternoon and movies and what not in the evening, some even had news at different times.

What time is the Eight PM movie ?  Poor announcer ...wait someone hit the wrong button

more after the jump

Around this time between the 60's-80's there was ideas of a fourth network (never will happen) yes, a network that would make the big 3 , CBS , ABC and NBC, have to open their club to a 4th and hopefully this fourth network would make ABC finally pack it in. ( That's a joke)    FOX  was the most successful of that , they are still on the air as of this writing,   FOX had began after buying up Metromedia stations and then having other independent stations join them. This was chipping away at the independent stations , something else was too: Cable.   HBO had movies (jerks) and so did AMC.  HBO and  being able to rent movies or buy them (insert rich person name here)  why watch on ole channel 32 with commercials or wait a couple years for the latest movie of  1982 come out when I can watch in 1983 anytime I want?  Independent stations were still OK , they  had other things, some had sports to benefit from (for now)  Plus why watch channel 32 air  "Lassie" at 5:30pm when I can watch whatever the heck this new cable thing was doing?
Now back to FOX, they had started off slow but did starting growing and well if someone sees a someone doing well with something and if they think (and have money to) they can do the same thing better   well there you go.   Also the government changed some rules (we could use this alot in writing TV and Radio topics)  there was a set of rules called the Financial Interest and Syndication Rules.  Not to get into explaining the whole thing , one thing of importance was that the FCC in the 1970 did not want the networks to have monopoly on television . (Insert your 2016 laughs here) They prevented the networks from owning  the programs they made in primetime and also prevented programming being aired by a network (their owned stations ) from airing programming they had any stake in.   If these rules were around today:    NBC couldn't air Chicago Fire  because Universal Television is a corporate relation. (This is alternate history if everything else stated the same)  Also CBS owned stations couldn't air Entertainment Tonight ( eeehhh ) because CBS makes the show.  This law may be the reason why MTM studios (Marty  Tyler Moore) and the Norman Lear  stuff was all over the networks more , because they were independent companies.   (We may talk more about 70's TV in the future)  The rules were relaxed  in the 80's , though not removed due to Hollywood lobbies and Ronald Regan (who was an actor before ).    The rules were seen as outdated after the rise of FOX (yep ) and cable. All the rules were repealed in 1995.      (our source for this)

In  1993-4, when the rules were pretty much sharks without teeth now and would soon be starved off Warner Brothers and Paramount thought hey it would be  a good time to  jump into some network fun.    Warner Brothers  , along with Tribune , and Jamie Kellner came together and announced a new network , using Tribune's stations (in turn for 25% ownership of this new network) as their neculus.  Tribune had stations in top markets and a national cable feed to help fill the gaps.    This network was called the WB which launched on January 11, 1995.   Meanwhile Paramount had kind of always wanted  a network, they tried in the 40's and 50's  they did have a stake in the first fourth TV network, Dumont.  While they also were instrumental in helping the 3rd network , ABC,  exist some more. Paramount bought some TV stations in the 90's and they found  a partner to part own a new project : a network.  Chris-Craft industries ,which owned a few stations including in the top 3 markets.  They announced their new network , UPN, in 1993 . United  Paramount Network, owned by Paramount (later Viacom ) and  Chris-Craft (get it ? United) .   They launched a few days after the WB in 1995.   (We could have done a history of UPN and WB thing )

This brings us to our main 2006 point.   On January 24th, 2006  it was announced by CBS and TimeWarner (see things changed )  that they were going to take their respective networks  , UPN  and The WB shut down them down, and take some programs and "merge" them this new network would by 50% owned by CBS corp and 50% by Time Warner, (Tribune got left out in the cold, but there was a deal for most of their affiliates that were WB to join this network for 10 years)  (source)
The WB and UPN had moderate successes and failures but  they felt it would be stronger to take the strongest programs, stronger stations (in some areas there was only a UPN or WB station while the other network didn't exist or had to be piped in on cable from a near by market) , and a name . The CW stands for Cbs and Warner Brothers.
this was the first logo .... ermmmm yep

Now in markets were there was  a both  this meant  they had to choose their favorites , or the strongest station. In Tribune markets (except in Philadelphia ,Seattle, Atlanta ) they went with Tribune's WB affiliates ,  While in Philly and Seattle they went to CBS's  UPN station because business politics is fun. In Boston,  Miami, and Dallas  CBS's UPN stations lost out so that was even , while in other markets CBS owned a UPN station minus the  whole  Tribune  thing CW went there. In other markets it was whoever the network felt was stronger.  The whole point was to make a stronger network out of the carnage of UPN and WB left overs.   The Network structure was originally the WB's .  They were doing Sunday Nights  from  5/4c to 10/9c,  Weeknights for 2 hours , daytime (formally the kids block )  from 3-5pm (time zone meaning nothing) and  the Kids WB children's block.    The Network launched in September.

this is logo they later announced and use today.
Now this plan looks good on paper and the first season did alright , not better than UPN or WB but alright .  That writers strike (might do a 10 years thing about that ) that  affect 2007-08 TV season and this hurt the CW.  They killed off their comedy department   they also laid off others and un filled some empty jobs.  This is a factor in the end of KIDS WB (which you read our whole look back of here)  where they sold the time to 4KIDS TV,  while the CW was leasing things (Joshuaonline should have bought Tuesdays, darn it)  they gave the 5 hour Sunday Nights to Media Rights Captial .  CW was their weak night so someone buying their weakest night makes sense... it of course didn't work and they cut the deal in November 2008 (the same year) and replaced it with Drew Carey Show repeats and Jericho .  WWE Smackdown (one of the UPN carry-overs) left in 2008 , for My Network TV (more on them later), even though it did well they dropped it because they were going after female viewers ages 18-34. (source) Then again if you are network with ratings problems and might not see 2010 , then you drop something people were watching on your network because it's not part of demographic is well , the wrong decade it's not like  1970's where people still might watch because there's only 6 channels, they can leave you and not come back.
Their demo chasing maybe did pay off anyway , they introduced shows like Gossip Girl ,and 90210. which had buzz and viewers, compared to  whatever the heck "Valentine" was.  They did give up on Sundays , giving that slot to the affiliates in 2009.
This brings us to around now , they did have a change in action in 2012 . First off , If I wrote in 2007 , that the CW would still be on the air in 2012, I would have called myself crazy.  They dropped the whole one demo , everyone else go to CBS or NBC or wherever for your fun instead , for inclusive audience.  Arrow came out which had 2 things going for it, it had corporate synergy since DC comics is owned by the parent company , and ratings. They added other genres too instead of just soapy soap stuff , they added  "'Who's Line is it anyway?" a revival , Sci fi shows and more.
10 years into's life  the network looks much better off than it did back in 2006 or even 2008 that  it has more viewers , programs that people are watching, and even one of those shows won an Emmy. "Jane the Virgin" was their first show to do such.   Interestingly, a lot of the shows on the network are from CBS or Warner, more so from Warner than CBS. Since it's a digital age they also have delved well into that . CW Seed is an internet platform  with original shows, some library stuff .

What about those other stations left in the cold  from that "merger" (it wasn't really a merger)? Well FOX  owned the Chris-Craft stations for a few years, UPN affiliates in NYC, Chicago, LA, and some others were owned by FOX for 6 years. Their stations were in that group being left out of the CW.  ( Tribune which had a relationship with the WB seemed more senese than having another an owner of another network run ...well that wasn't an owner of the CW.. your major affiliates)   In February of 2006, about a month after the CW was announced they announced they were launching a new network called My Network TV.  Not the best name, but FOX's parent  had just bought Myspace , which was hot at the time ,  and was My everything. Their location stations websites were myfox.... .com  .  Stations that weren't owned by FOX but maybe were left out of the CW , could instead of becoming independent (because who needs that?)  could join FOX's thing.   They had  a unique strategy that  I personally found interesting  they were going to bring telenovelas  but in English
airing 5 nights   a week in  strip.  The shows were in 3 month cycle and have recaps on the 6th night.
my Network TV, mine you don't touch!
Most networks have different programs each night , though  the spanish networks , Univision , for example airs Telenovelas  in prime time and airs them in a daily fashion.  They also were going after that 18-34 audience the CW was going for,   Now the network could have developed this more gone more traditional American soap , if they had to change the telenvoelas anyway ,  with  cut off dates. A comedy running daily could have been fun and interesting where it's plots could run through the whole series in a few months, etc.   They debuted in September of 2006, about 2 weeks before the CW.  The ratings were alright they would be great if it was cable ,but getting less than a million on broadcast doesn't work well so they dropped the telenovelas in 2007.   They really were on some lost track for 2 years of airing anything they could find.  They did have one program that helped a little starting in 2008, they picked up the rights to WWE Smakdown  , the first night that aired , MY Net(hahhaha )  beat the  CW (ironc). In 2009 they found a new focus ...well an old focus they stopped being a network (didn't change the time)  and started airing syndicated repeats. Smackdown packed up to Syfy  in 2011. Currently they air one of the  Law and Order spinoffs (so does everyone else)  cable off repeats of The Closer, the biggest thing is they air the Walking Dead from AMC, which is the only thing not in weekend drama syndication.
It's not really a network anymore it's stations can move their programs to other times , for example in Seattle they air My Network TV stuff 12am-2am , some stations air their programs with  digi network , like METV sharing the rest of channel space.

2006 was an interesting year in what happened in broadcast TV ,and as of this writing there's not been  new networks launched on broadcast TV (well skipping the digital networks)    and there may not ever be again.  That was the last hurrah for ideas like that  , there maybe other things done in  a structure.  If Joshuaonline had been doing TV talk in 2006 ,  I don't know what would have been said (we need a time machine)  but it would been interesting to write about the new networks and what they were doing.    That's our first 10 years article  and we hope you will love the rest  , though the others might not have so much back story.

Note:       Though it seems now , the Tribune company and the CW are in discussion mode to see if they renew or if the CW will have to do something else.

My Network TV 2009 season my thoughts.

My network TV is this year trying to be a syndication model with syndication repeats of Law and Order , The Unit. Plus the Syndication version of parent network Fox's Are you smarter than a fifth grader?. This is just a little odd for a network to do. But NBC,the CW, and Mynetworktv are trying to save them selves. CW is giving up Sundays Mynetwork Gave up Saturdays and Original programming that was in 2007. NBC gave up 10/9 to air 5 nights of Leno instead of a Drama. This is not the best idea for a network to go into syndication. Affiates can do that themselves that makes it where there's no point in Syndication. Plus like the 5 day a week fifth graders and Deal or no deal is 1 night and may not be on same channel for the real Syndication. But My network TV needs to think of a new plan ,one that works, pick up new shows make new shows If Fox can get this to work they should let My network Share some FOX shows too.
