Charlie Brown has Christmas Again : Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown

Peanuts Christmas

I have to point out that this is not a Peanuts lookback in our official rule about not doing holiday specials, but this counts as a look at a holiday special that just happens to have Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang.  The second note  there are like 4 Peanuts Christmas specials, one of them is filler for ABC's broadcast of the big one, while there's one for Rerun as well.  This one doesn't really get any air time at all. (In the U.S)

Note 2: I happen to Like "I want a Dog for Christmas , Charlie Brown".

It's Christmas Time Again , Charlie Brown  was first broadcast on November 27th 1992 on the CBS television network. (We missed the 25th anniversary exact date by a few days)   It was the last  new one for CBS , as they decided to give up or something.

It was divided up into segments and based directly from different story lines in the strips, so no single story like the first one.

The special starts with Linus trying to sled down a snow bank with a box and resulting in various degrees of failure.  Then Charlie Brown is out door to door selling Christmas wreaths before Thanksgiving.  (Insert joke about commercialization of Christmas here) In fact Franklin tells him that yes he is adding to the over commercialization of Christmas.  (woah alright then)
packing peanuts... I am ashamed of this joke / Copyright Peanuts

Sally decides to help and she does help sell at least one on air.  This special uses Guaradi music arranged by David Benoit , this was his first time doing Peanuts specials.   Now we skip to some Peppermint Patty where she has to read A Tale of Two Cities (advanced schools in the Peanuts world.) she of course doesn't want to read it.  She procrastinates.
Only Peppermint Patty could wear shorts and sandals in the snow/copyright Peanuts

Marcie and Peppermint Patty attend  a performance of  Handel's Messiah. Snoopy is ringing bells to collect money , but he switches to a horn after someone makes a remark.  It also consists of people saying he's not the real Santa Claus.
Something about you seems not real Santa-ish/ Copyright Peanuts

Sally is writing for English , about how Christmas is the season of getting as Charlie Brown tries to correct her to say it is the season of giving.  Then she's making a Christmas list and writing to Santa.   Sally then wants  Linus to tell her about Christmas and he tries to read her from Luke chapter 2 but she continues with her thoughts on disliking shopping.  Later on she doesn't like the 12 days of Christmas and she wonders what a calling bird is , as Linus tries to explain she goes back to her thoughts of socks.
She killed him/ Copyright Peanuts

Charlie Brown wants to get a pair of gloves for Peggy Jean but he doesn't have $25 for gloves. (He gave up on the little red haired girl I see) Linus tell her she will love anything he gives her, if she cares about him, Lucy is not helpful though.  He tries to sell his signed baseball but that doesn't work very well. So he decides instead to sell his comic books.
Is that enough, comic books, Charlie Brown? /Copyright Peanuts

He sold his whole collection to buy them , but then she comes in the same store to show that her mother bought her, the same gloves. He decides not to give them to her because she already head them. (Guessing No returns ?)
Charlie Brown's life is fun / Copyright Peanuts

Peppermint Patty wants to be Mary in the play , Marcie says she was already chosen , it takes her asking the teacher to find out what Marcie said.  Peppermint Patty has to play a sheep instead.  Sally has been asked to be in the same play and  be an angel.   She continues her practicing  while Charlie Brown holds the same hockey stick as before.
Why did never know much about Charlie Brown's Hockey career/ Copyright Peanuts

Peppermint Patty doesn't take kindly to being a sheep. (baaadd choice?) Linus and Charlie Brown watch the play as it happens. Peppermint Patty starts constantly baaing and Franklin and Marcie wonderfully master it.  The next part she forgets her baaa and starts making random noises and the audience laughs as Marcie drags her off. Linus says it's been a good play so far. (Alright then)    Sally forgets her hark line , and she says hockey stick. (I like how they built up the joke)  Also her mention of Harold Angel to find out that's a real person.
Marcie's not a good Shepard/ Copyright Peanuts

Harold Angel/ Copyright Peanuts

The last part Lucy wants to take Linus' spot at the TV but he uses something she said against her and she leaves.   The end.

The Lookback : Intergalactic Thanksgiving

The Flashback   Thanksgiving

We get to dive into the  Nelvana specials  it's  a trek we haven't delved into much, but it's time to do such a thing.   Our special is from 1979 , it's called "Intergalactic Thanksgiving" or also known as "Please Don't Eat the Planet".  Let's dive in to this fun Canadian animated special.

or pick a title and stick with it

Human farmers are leaving earth are in space looking for a place to farm and the focus of our special  is a farming family with their daughter named Victoria and dog who looks at full spread pictures of trees. (what?)
Space Convoy / Copyright Nelvana

The mother thinks that her husband is driving to slow and he decides to speed up and they of course crash into a planet.  (oops)  This planet is filled with beings and one of them warns everyone that the "aliens are coming" and he goes to tell the king.   The farmer and his family decide to live there  (because why not?)  and they get their farm already (well if they have space travel they can have portable farms too).   The planet inhabitants think the farmers are funny. The farmer says he brings good will and peace and the king says welcome to the planet , Laugh-a-lot. The king is named Gucci (I don't know how he spells it)    The family is called Spademinder.  Meanwhile Victoria meets Not Funny Enough (that's the prince's name).
Welcome to our planet, please don't eat it.  / Copyright Nelvana

The Spademinders start their farming , NFE (it's easier this way)  decides to take Victoria on trip with him and show her the planet. (how romantic)   And he takes her around the planet in musical montage. (the best way to go)
montage/ Copyright Nelvana

10 minutes in the title is still confusing , there's no Thanksgiving so far, and no trying to eat the planet. Victoria says her family is focused on hard work  and there's no time for fun , while NFE tells her that on their planet , they mine food.  In the evening , they make it back to her farm and she kisses him on the cheek. (I was joking about the romantic thing, special!)

It's another day and the Gucci is not wondering where everyone has gone.  (They have lives of their own , king!)  Then he asks the mirror from "Snow White" (that's not a joke) who's the funniest of them of all, then it switches to a different figure.  It has good news that everyone is laughing, but not laughing at the king. (oops) Apparently, farming is funnier. Gucci tries to make the people laugh at him again but this doesn't work.   He gets mad and tires to do the hitting the mallet in the dirt, but he did it so hard that that the land cracks and NFE , Victoria, and her dog fall into a hole.
This poor dog, thought they were dead for a second/ copyright Nelvana

Meanwhile, in the hole, they are still alive. (otherwise this would be a dark special)  They find the food mines too.  Meanwhile above ground they create a search party. While those in the underground find a talking flea like thing  and he asks them to help  prop up the planet because the mining makes it unstable.  They are propping it up in song. (the best way to do it!)   Victoria and NFE  say they have to warn everyone.
All hail the bug overloards / Copyright Nelvana

Above ground , giant vegetables grow.  (Apparently , the Spademinders are good farmers) NFE makes it up  and they all search for Victoria and Cromwell (the dog) . This was by pulling up the giant vegetables.   They find them.  Anyway, every year they have a feast on the planet (like Thanksgiving) and the planet is saved from caving in, they grow their own food now , and the Spademinders sometimes have fun now, and stop being so serious and the Laugh a lotters have serious sides now. (yay!)  That was a rushed ending.

How'd they get turkey? /Copyright Nelvana

Yes, I get the titles,  it's like Thanksgiving, and  also they were kind of eating their planet.  I though it was enjoyable enough  some of the gags were great.  It does have that message of "Hey you serious people-- loosen up a little , hey you loose people, serious is sometimes needed too." Which you can't fault it for doing.   The animation is alright too  if limited , but the special uses that in a good manner.  It does have some repeat animation but that's standard for this era, and  could be worse.   It's an interesting twist for Thanksgiving and not a bad one.

Tune in next time when we move to a new planet and try to eat it.

The Lookback: Garfield's Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving  The Flashback

Following in the tradition of  comic strip series having animated specials and having a Thanksgiving special  continues.  This time with Garfield , our favorite orange Monday hating cat, gets to grace us for this holiday.

The special first appeared on CBS  in 1989  and once again it Features Lorenzo Music as Garfield and we have Lou Rawls and Desirée Goyette with the songs,   so let's take a look at this Thanksgiving special.

Garfield wakes up John for breakfast and after eating he sees the calendar says that it's Wednesday and he has to go to the vet , so he rips off the date and he sees that the next day is Thanksgiving.  They go to the store, but Jon still remembers that Garfield has to go the vet.  Jon also tries constantly asking the vet, Liz, out on a date.  Liz says Garfield is healthy but he's fat and has to go on a diet and she does accept  Jon's offer after he holds his breath for a long time. (that worked!)
Fine I'll go out with you just don't die in my office/ copyright Film Roman

Garfield starts his diet  and of course he doesn't like it.  He later gets into a fight with the scale and tries to steal the "good food" but keep s getting foiled by Odie , who was placed by Jon into monitoring Garfield. (Bet your dog can't do that)  The next day,  its Thanksgiving and Liz is coming over to the house.  Jon gets Thanksgiving stuff ready though not very well. Garfield tries to sabotage  some of the food.
Hey that sugar is a bit ruff / copyright Film Roman

Liz arrives at the house and Garfield tricks her and she recommends that he can get off his diet and  do some exercises instead.  Jon's dinner is ruined and he so under Garfield's recommendation calls his Grandma to fix it.  (that works )   Jon tries to entertain Liz by talking with her about Thanksgiving  while Grandma does her magic on the food. Jon finds it interesting that  Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October.(shout out to Joshuaonline CA)   Dinner's done and she slips quietly out the door.

'll carve Justice!/ Copyright Film Roman

Liz, Jon, Garfield  ,and Odie have their meal.   Liz seemed to enjoy it.   Odie has to go on the diet.

Nice spread / Copyright Film Roman

Garfield brings a great Thanksgiving special , and one thing I can say about Thanksgiving specials is that they seem a little harder to write.  I like how paced it is and brings a lot of good laughs.  The music is good.    I say this is a Thankgiving classic much like the "Peanuts" and its kind of sad none of the networks air it annually.

Tune in Next time when we fund out Garfield has a cross over with the Peanuts for Thanksgiving.

But First These Messages : Cereal 2

But First These Messages

We've done Cereal before , this is Cereal 2 : Part of your balanced breakfasto   ,because there is so much in the world of cereal commercials why not do more more more ?
So We will return  our episode of  Herman Munster vs Darth Vader  but first these messages...

How are Lucky Charms made you ask?  Well magic!  Unlike other cereal made in some factory or something , Lucky Charms are made by magic and apparently  Lucky screwed up , but good thing the kids happen to be there to help.     All the colors got mixed up so they had to bring order with why ever balloons have to be red.

They would then use their color calling powers for evil.

Did you know Lucky Charms are older than history?

This one gave me questions , first did those kids have their own portal? , second if so , how? , if not  how did they get a head of him?  Third, if they aren't the same kids , are they great times whatever grandparents, if so how'd they get glasses?  Also why did Lucky not just magic away the kids?
The kids , the dinosaurs, the leprechaun all of them who is delicious?

It's the Lucky Charms cross over I asked for!

Those kids decided to bother an innocent  Lucky he was just minding his own business.  He magics up a cottage and ends up with 3 bears, deal he steal a cottage?   Then he gives away lucky charms, what?

We need to balance this breakfast out a little so..

Poor rabbit he just wanted some Trix, give him some! Also how does cartoon milk taste?

This is a strange world

   Trix are for painters

So trix are for adults too then, because painters are usually adults, but not for rabbits?    Also how'd he do that with the pain. Also he didn't paint the house right.  So the rabbit doesn't have a name?
Don't cross us again rabbit!

The Lookback : Thanksgiving Dad

Disney Thanksgiving The Flashback

There aren't many Thanksgiving specials ,as I have  said before, but I always try to find something of interest  in television or other  media for the holiday. This time I delve in personally one of my favorite Disney animated series, Pepper Ann.  It's time to take a look at "Thanksgiving Dad"

The episode is the tenth from season 1 in 1997 (so it's 20 years old)  and starts with Halloween. (Sure why not?)   Moose  and Pepper Ann get a call from their dad  and he says he has something planned for them on Thanksgiving. Meanwhile her and mother and her aunt are preparing for Thanksgiving. (That's hardcore planning there)

You should see when they plan for Christmas/ Copyright Disney

It skips to November 11th where Lydia (Pepper Ann's mother) and her Aunt Janie are shopping for Thanksgiving. while Pepper Ann tells her sister that she thinks that their father is coming for Thanksgiving instead of calling as normal.    Then it skips to Thanksgiving Day. Pepper Ann is happy expecting her father's surprise.  She begins to expect that her father is coming to Thanksgiving.

This magazine told me.. don't look at me like that/ Copyright Disney

Pepper Ann counts the chairs around the table and sees there's an extra one thinking that  her mother is on  it - her father coming to dinner. Also there's a few Pepper Ann's father scenes where she imagines him doing a bunch of random things to get to her.  Meanwhile , Janie has to go out looking for more yams , but there are no yams.   Milo, Pepper Ann's Friend, tries to help her get over it and tells he's not coming. Though he's not helpful.

I wear the same thing when I go shopping/ Copyright Disney

Lydia tells her what that extra place is for  that it's for her to join the adult table, but she isn't happy that her father is happy.  The turkey's burnt.  PepperAnn's dad calls and tells her and Moose to turn on the TV.  To find out that he is flying the Thanksgiving  Day parade blimp.
 Dad o vision /Copyright Disney

That's the episode.   Some clean up notes : A lot of the episode has scenes where Pepper Ann imagines her father either at a diner, talking about her, or in the desert trying to contact her, or sky driving to their house. When watching the episode you can feel some of Pepper Ann's tension  as she waits for her father to show up. It's a feeling  I think many can feel when they are expecting someone or something to come but at the same time they don't know if they really are.

Of course since it's a comedy there are some funny moments.  I like the pacing of the episode it feels like a Thanksgiving Day. That's our lookback , tune in next time when we report from a blimp.

But First These Messages: Power us Up

But First These Messages

Without batteries we wouldn't have anything portable really, and they really provide us a service that we take for granted. It's interesting . even though batteries are so big in our world, they still have to be advertised to us.

Batteries ... But First these, messages.

In the 1990's  Duracell envisioned a world  where plastic people obviously killed off all the humans and took over the world, but they had to be powered by batteries.  The Puttermans  appared in  Duracell ads between 1994 to 1996.

I have some questions , how do they put the batteries in, or does someone have to put hte batteries in for them?
Also batteries are their life force , yet the have to buy them?
Also did they kill that woman , or will they give her a new battery later?
          So many questions!

Hmm I think they killed her

In this world, even the pets are battery operated.  This is the future folks! Wake up ! (bonk on the head )
This bird later got a sitcom called Everybody loves Birdy.

That bird is annoying, was anyone else expecting one of them to take the battery out , I was kind of thinking that, maybe I have dark thoughts, it's that last commercial's fault!

This commercial again makes me ask so many questions , like they can go in the water? Also the fish are battery powered , when they eat "meat" does that mean the batteries are taken and then they eat the food?
That's the face that's seen things

It's a Lookback , Charlie Brown : A Charlie Brown Celebration

 The Flashback  Peanuts

Charlie Brown needs to be celebrated so this was it.  "A Charlie Brown Celebration" is a Peanuts special from may of 1982 on the CBS network (of course).  It was an hour long special , which sparked CBS to pick up a new animated weekly series called "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show".   This special is  pretty much a collection of Peanuts stories that would be too long to make a 30 minute (24 Minutes+ Commercials) special.  Also Charles Schulz himself introduces the special and  he explains how the special will work which is nice and handy.

The segments have varying lengths  kind of like how Schulz explains his comic strips can be one timers or have a story line that runs for weeks. In other words this is like a celebration of Charlie Brown and the gang in animated form.

The first segment ,called School, is about a minute long with Sally doing her classic laments about school starting.  A short bump where Lucy tickles Snoopy and he falls of his dog house  and giggles some more.  Then it goes back to school ,but the time has skipped to the first day of school  with more laments about school by Sally Brown.   Then it's Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder in classes. Again it's just about another minute long.

The second segment is called Kite.  Charlie Brown does his famous kite flying and he gets caught in a tree. Then it turns  into a segment about Lucy and Linus talking about Edgar Allen Poe.  Charlie Brown does more kite flying  and gets everyone all tangled up.

The third segment : Charlie Brown's School Days.  Back to school (wow!)   We have Linus in his class writing about learning to butter up a teacher.  This segment is about our main characters in school.

The Fourth segment is called "Sally" it's about Sally (of course) but there's  also get the Peanuts character, Eudora.  It takes place at camp and it's mostly about Eudora teasing Snoopy, whom Sally brought with her.

The Fifth segment is called "Sally and Linus" which is about Lucy and Franklin. (alright I'm kidding just making sure you are paying attention)   Linus reads about his camping and gets to queen snakes which makes his teacher faint.  Sally has a hard time drawing a cow leg and complains and gets sent to the principal's office.

The Sixth segment is called "Peppermint Patty".   Peppermint Patty is looking for a private school to attend. Because she's Peppermint Patty she thinks Snoopy is a human and so of course a suggestion was Ace Obedience school. (She was looking for a cheap private school so her father wouldn't have to spend so much.)  She tells Charlie Brown  he tries to explain it to her but of course she's Peppermint Patty, she doesn't listen to anyone.  She goes to the school and notices that everyone else has  a dog and that there are no desks.  Marcie asks her how was her day?  Apparently , Peppermint Patty didn't notice it was dog school. Charlie Brown tells Snoopy that Peppermint Patty is not going to be happy with the beagle when she finds out it's a school for dogs. (Ha ha when she finds out)  She's still at the school and apparently the school doesn't think this is strange at all. (What kind of world is this?)  She graduates. (Again what is this place?)  Also Marcie still doesn't tell her  but implies that she knows and just doesn't tell P.P.   Marcie the next day, tells her that the teacher has been asking where she has been.  She asks for attorney (Snoopy) to prove she has graduated , Snoopy of course is nervous because she may find out the truth now. (May)  Peppermint Patty does find out and looks for Snoopy. (probably to show him how she knows how fetch now)  She then gets into a fight with a cat the mean one who lives next door. (That escalated quickly) Peppermint Patty and Snoopy end up fighting World War 2 (the cat) and I think they lost. P.P goes back to people school.

This was the longest segment so far.

 More after the jump

The Seventh Segment :  Linus.   This one Linus and Sally are on a field trip. It's mostly Sally being annoyed by school some more.  Linus remembers the place they went before and then he is reunited to famous peanuts character, Truffles.  Sally gets jealous and she and Truffles start fighting over Linus.  He goes on the roof and he refuses to get down until they stop fighting.  Then he gets stuck.  She asks Snoopy and Woodstock to rescue him which I guess they do.

The Eight Segment is Piano.  Lucy is doing her classic interact with Schroeder at his piano. She tells him how if they were married she would dust his piano every day. The she temps him for reaction by talking about Beethoven.   It's pretty much Lucy and Schroeder doing their normal segment.  Eventually she throws his Piano into the sewer. (not very nice) Charlie Brown helps him and they go down to where the water goes but it was a lost cause, so he buys a new one.

The Ninth Segment is called  Lucy , in this one Lucy in angry that she isn't thankful for anything, Linus tries to help. So he does something sweet and she cries.  Then Lucy has  Linus get fire wood  while she plays jokes on him and talks about  Abe Lincoln.  (random)

The Tenth segment : Peppermint Patty and Marcie.   Marcie doesn't really like playing baseball. She also recommends that they need caps. So she takes initiative  and tries to make some caps. They go through a cycle of caps that annoy Peppermint Patty.  P.P sees that a baseball team is having a free cap day for children, so her plan is to run through nine times to get nine caps. (Yes this plan has flaws we could point out.)  Marcie runs after the first cap , Peppermint Patty quits on her plan.

The Eleventh segment, Charlie Brown.    Charlie Brown was pitching and he's feeling sick and decides to go home.  Charlie goes to the E.R by himself.  Sally can't find him and apparently decides that it's a good time to move into his room. (Long running Peanuts Gag)   Then she finds out that Chuck is in the hospital. (You maybe asking where the parents are, well Barber's picnic and C.B didn't want to bother them or know where it is or something.)  Meanwhile, Charlie Brown wonders if he's dead.  Everyone else is worried even Lucy. (Yes her too)  She even cries.  Peppermint Patty and Marcie are turned away at the hospital because they are too young. (This didn't stop Chuck and Linus in Why Charlie Brown Why,)  The Continuing theme of Marcie being in love with C.B continues she wants him to ask her to the prom in the future.   Lucy is unhappy when Charlie Brown's mom says he's not any better, and  promises that she would never pull the football away again if he gets away.   Then Charlie Brown gets better.  So the football thing happens and Charlie Brown doesn't kick the ball  and kicks her hand. (Darn it Schulz , darn it!)

That's the special.  This was the first of three television specials for the Peanuts that featured multiple stories that others were : "It's and Adventure , Charlie  Brown" and "Snoopy the Musical"  but this was the first one.  I like the idea of taking some story lines that aren't long enough  to be  24 minutes long.  And none of the segments feel like they go on to long.  Since it's the peanuts there are alot of gags that made me laugh and there is of course some sweetness too.  It's great to see the variety of characters even including Eudora and Truffles is a nice touch.

That's the special tune in next time when see how Truffles and Linus are doing now.
