CNN Changes Programming Line Up: Including Primetime, Early Morning, and Saturdays

CNN TV News Cable TV News

The constant at CNN has been change, and again a programming schedule change. CNN has announced anchor changes and new programs that effect their mornings, daytime, and primetime, along with weekends.

Primetime, which had been in a state of a flux since Chris Cuomo's firing in December 2021, and now former anchor, Don Lemon, leaving primetime in 2022.  The 10 pm Eastern hour will be given to political correspondent , Abby Phillip, with 11pm being hosted by Laura Coates, CNN's legal analyst.

Phillip's program brings back an old name to CNN, CNN NewsNight , which CNN previously used until 2005.  Coates' program will be branded Laura Coates Live.

Now, the mornings.  Kasie Hunt has been named anchor of 5AM eastern program Early Start, and chief White House correspondent Phil Mattingly has been named co-anchor of CNN This Morning with Poppy Harlow.

Of note, Pamela Brown, CNN's chief investigative correspondent will anchor  a daily 3pm ET hour show, that show will be called The Bulletin . This means that CNN News Central from D.C will be cut to 2 hours.

Here's  the weekday line up in review, changed programming in Italics

5-6am ET: Early Start  (new anchor)

6-9am ET: CNN This Morning with Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly  (new co-anchor)

9am-12pm ET: CNN News Central

12-1pm ET: Inside Politics with Dana Bash

1-3pm ET: CNN News Central

3-4pm ET: The Bulletin with Pamela Brown  (new program)

4-6pm ET: The Lead with Jake Tapper

6-7pm ET: The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer

Now to the weekends.  Victor Blackwell, Christiane Amanpour, Manu Raju, and Chris Wallace will be hosting new programming.

On Saturdays, CNN This Morning will be cut one hour ending at 8AMET, to allow for a new show with Victor Blackwell at 8amET.   Chris Wallace will have a new live show on Saturday mornings at 10am ET,  and CNN International's  Christiane Amanpour will host at 11AMET. The 10am-12pm ET block replaces two hours of CNN Newsroom.

Here's the Saturday line up , program changes in italics

6-8am ET: CNN This Morning Weekends

8-9am ET: First of All with Victor Blackwell

9-10am ET: Smerconish

10-11am ET: The Chris Wallace Show

11am-12pm ET: Christiane Amanpour

12-4pm ET: CNN Newsroom with Fredricka Whitfield

4-8pm ET: CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta

On Sunday, due to Phillip moving to primetime, her slot on Inside Politics is being given to Manu Raju, CNN's Capitol Hill correspondent.

Of note, the weekly primetime show "King Charles" with Gayle King and Charles Barkley will be coming to the network as planned.  Alisyn Camerota seems to be the odd one out in the changes, she will be part of CNN's Sunday magazine show "The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper".  It is also interesting to see that Amanpour, who hosts a daily show on CNN(International ) which also runs on PBS, is getting more spotlight on CNN US.  Sadly, Saturday daytime gets news headline focused programming cut by 3 hours.

CNN Makes Primetime Changes (For Now)

CNN TV NEWS Cable TV News

Last week, CNN announced a new morning show is coming soon.  Part of that shift was that Don Lemon will be leaving his show Don Lemon Tonight  which leaves a 2-hour gap in CNN's line up. The cable news network has announced that, for now, they will have CNN Newsroom anchor Alisyn Camerota
and  CNN Senior Legal Analyst Laura Coates to share hosting duties for  CNN Tonight, going back to that name from October 10 to November 11th, the midterms.

The Lead anchor Jake Tapper, will be doing hosting duties for CNN Tonight during the same period,   each weeknight at 9PM ET.   Tapper's program will be shortened an hour, current New Day hosts John Berman and Brianna Keilar will host The Lead, rotating.  The 5pm ET hour will be Wolf Blitzer's The Situation Room .   The rest of the line up between 4pm-12amet are un changed, meaning "Outfront" and "AC360" still air their normal slots with their normal hosts.

CNN says this is for the midterms, but alot could be read into the ideas going on here, CNN said that Berman and Keilar were going to gave new roles at the network and Jake Tapper being tried, again, in primetime could also noted as maybe a test try. CNN could still hold off on finding new primetime hosts for while, the 9PMET hour has been still mostly CNN Tonight  since Cuomo's firing last year in December.

The new morning show's launch date , name, and other details haven't been announced.

CBS This Morning to become CBS Mornings

CBS TV News

CBS announced Tuesday that their current breakfast time show CBS This Morning will be rebranded as CBS Mornings from Tuesday, September 7th.  This coincides with other changes to the program including a new studio and co-host.

CBS Mornings  is said to be continuing the mission CBS This Morning had to be a more news-based morning show versus it's NBC and CBS rivals.  They want to expand featuring reporting during the 2nd hour (8am) with things news, sports, etc , and notably culture pieces with now former co-host, Anthony Mason.

A  big change will also be a change of location, CBS will be doing their morning show from Times Square, the former home of  MTV's Total Request Live , the studio was used by CBS during the 2020 election.  The current studio was launched with this morning show in 2012, after a move from 5th Avenue.

Another change will be a new co-host joining Gayle King, the only of the original CBS This Morning Trio from 2012 to still be on the show, and Tony Dokoupil will be  Nate Burelson.  CBS This Morning Saturday, will be rebranded as CBS Saturday Morning will still have  Jeff Glor, Dana Jacobson, and Michelle Miller as hosts, and CBS Sunday Morning will continue as is with Jane Pauley.

A preview was played on the program seems to indicate the show will be taking an influence from the popular Sunday series on CBS, which unlike CTM on weekdays is #1 in ratings against ABC and NBC.

This is many in a long list of names and morning shows for CBS going back to the early days in 1950's. CBS has used  The Morning Show, Good Morning! , The CBS Morning News, Morning (which ironically they seem be harkening back to with this move), The CBS Morning News, The Morning Program, CBS This Morning (The old one) , The Early Show, CBS This Morning (the current one).

While CBS This Morning has seen some good ratings days  , it's still the third place show out of three and CBS wants to try and not be, morning shows have become the main core of the main 3 networks' focus as a way to make sure viewers still tune in and get the sweet ad money. These are the money making shows and with ratings down across the three they are trying to stick something to hope it works.   (Plus, they have more competition with cable news channels  and local stations that have local news past 7 AM that  in much of the country are local and live when the network shows are taped delayed out side the east coast as an more attractive option.)

CBS always seems to be trying to reinvent their morning shows with name changes, format changes, and staff changes.  (Gayle King as seemingly taken the Harry Smith role of being a constant while chair shuffle around her) Hoping that something will stick, their morning is somewhat more enjoyable than Today and GMA to me,  it's good they did try a different option that just being GMA/Today 3 , and it seems they want to stick with that while hoping a new name and look will do something. Will it? I don't know, maybe they'll change the name in a few years ago, and the Early Show is back or something.

Anyway, Press Release after the Jump , the new "CBS Mornings" starts September 7th on CBS at 7AM (in most time zones)

Shepard Smith Coming to CNBC

Cable News TV News  CNBC

Former Fox News anchor, Shepard Smith, is coming to CNBC as a general news anchor.  CNBC announced Wednesday that Smith will be anchoring a new 7pm ET newscast bringing back "The News" title,  a name that was  used on MSNBC with Brian Williams from 1996-2002, when the program moved to CNBC in 2002 until 2004, when Williams was preparing to take the NBC Nightly News anchor desk.

Smith is joining CNBC as their general news and chief general breaking news anchor. He joins after leaving Fox News Channel in October of 2019 ,after 23 years being their chief news anchor , appearing for breaking news on both Fox News Channel and the FOX network. He anchored programs like "Fox Report", "Studio B" and "Shepard Smith Reporting".

CNBC has been running a "Special Report" on the network since January in the 7PM ET slot , this will  be replaced by "The News with Shepard Smith" sometime later this year.

Thoughts:  It is interesting to see that CNBC, a business news focused channel , at least in daytime, is interested in going into general news, though as stated above that isn't out of their wheel.  The idea of having a news show that might be a better counter weight to what the cable news channels could bring in viewers who want the news of the day without any of the excess you get on CNN or MSNBC.  Shepard Smith  is  a good news anchor  and makes for a good choice for a lead anchor , especially if there is a big news story that needs to be brought.

WGN America to Have News Once Again

TV NEWS

Nexstar Media the owners of over 170 local stations in the United States, announced Wednesday that come summer they will be launching a new 3 hour national prime time newscast on cable network owned by the company , WGN America.

For those that might not remember , WGN America was launched in the 1970's as cable repeater of WGN-TV Chicago it brought the nation, programming relayed from the independent station in Chicago. This is how much the nation was able to see Cubs game, along other Chicago mainstay teams.  Also WGN's newscasts aired nationally on the station. At one point, the station was called Superstation WGN  aired WGN Chicago's Midday and 9pm newscasts.  Even after the station stopped being a full national relay of WGN-TV In 2014,  the station had dropped airing these simulcasts in the idea of moving to full national general channel.

In 2019, Nexstar Media completed a purchase of the Tribune Company (named after the Chicago Tribune, which started WGN-TV in 1948) the owners of WGN-TV and WGN America. WGN America has tried it's hand at original and original to the channel programming, but now it seems they want to go a news direction.

Nexstar announced Wednesday, they will be launching "News Nation" will be broadcast from WGN-TV's home in Chicago, a 3 hour prime (7-10 PM CT) newscast on WGN America.  This will be Nexstar's first attempt at working in the national news casting realm , as they normally only broadcast in local news. They have the resources to do such thing with a mass over over 170 local stations, stretching across the nation.

The primetime idea is interesting  to note as the US cable news channels fail to provide news in those hours , as they focus on politics and opinions, it may provide an oasis for an audience looking for something different.

   From the press release:

Nexstar’s Sean Compton, Executive Vice President of WGN America, believes News Nation will fill an important void in the current television news landscape.
“No one else is delivering news in prime-time,” said Compton. “Others are airing entertainment programming, sports programming or opinion shows, which creates a great opportunity for WGN America to provide an alternative in this daypart with News Nation. Across our markets, we consistently hear from viewers who are seeking straight-ahead, unbiased news reporting that is grounded in fact, not opinion. News Nation will deliver exactly that.”

WGN-TV's  current presidential/  news director, Jennifer Lyons, will be overseeing the task.   News Nation is also set to be launched as an app called newsnationnow.   The program is set to launch in the summer.

The CW Returns to Sundays

The CW  TV News

When CBS and Warner decided to create a network together using the structure of the WB and UPN, the schedule structure was the WB Network structure, including Sundays 5pm/4c to 10/9c but due to some low ratings and ratings troubles they ended the  Sunday night block in 2009.   Starting in the 2018-19 television season, the CW will return to the night with 2 hours of programming , so adding 2 hours to their weekly amount of programming.

The CW says that their affiliates are on board including owners of stations, Tribune, Sinclair, and Nexstar.

According to Deadline , The CW had been thinking of expanding to Sundays for sometime and made the decision to do so in December.

“By expanding to six nights, The CW is now able to give our fans even more of the series they’re so passionate about. Broadcasting remains the foundation of our multi-platform approach to bringing our programming to viewers. Over the past seven years, The CW has added more than 80 hours of original scripted programming to its schedule – now that number can continue to climb, as we grow our broadcast line-up, and continue to add content on every platform,” said Pedowitz. “I’d like to thank Chris and Ann for being instrumental in making this happen, and to thank all of our station groups for being such terrific partners as we add Sundays to our primetime schedule this fall on all our affiliates across the country.”

Hallmark to Launch new TV Channel

TV NEWS

In an age where we  have more cable channels either "reinventing themselves, being shutdown , or rebranding,"  Hallmark seems to be bucking that and launching 3rd channel called, Hallmark Drama, which will join it's sister networks Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries.

It will not be replacing any of the other channels they own, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries will continue as is.

The channel will air programming like repeats of their original series like  "Cedar Cove" , and repeats of Little House in the Prairie (which left main channel earlier this year )  and of course more will be announced later.    They don't have a website yet , but it is on twitter.

It is interesting to see a  totally new cable linear channel launch  in this age.   you can read the press release here  .

Also, they are launching a stand alone streaming service for you Hallmark Channel Movie fans so any cord cutters won't have to worry either.

Veteran Broadcaster to Host “For the Record with Greta,” Weeknights at 6 p.m. ET on MSNBC
JANUARY 5, 2017 – Veteran broadcaster Greta Van Susteren will join MSNBC, it was announced today by Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC.

Van Susteren will host “For the Record with Greta,” which will air weeknights from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. ET. The program will debut on Monday, January 9, based in Washington, D.C. It replaces the timeslot of Bloomberg’s political television show “With All Due Respect,” which ended in early December.

“For the Record” will provide news coverage and analysis of the day’s top headlines spanning politics and beyond. The early evening broadcast will build on MSNBC’s strategic shift to a breaking news focus during the day and, along with “MTP Daily” and “Hardball,” will provide one of the key bridges to primetime. MSNBC marked its most-watched year ever in 2016, and was the fastest growing top 100 cable network in weekday prime.

“Greta is a true pro with a proven record of tough journalism,” said Griffin.  “Her broad range of experience and sharp news judgment will be of great value to MSNBC as we build on our momentum going into a new year and a new administration.”

“I’m thrilled to start my next chapter at MSNBC,” Van Susteren said. “The network is the right destination for the smart news and analysis I hope to deliver every day, and I look forward to joining the talented journalists and analysts I respect there.”

A 25-year cable news veteran, Van Susteren joins MSNBC from Fox News Channel, where she hosted “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” for 14 years. Previously, Van Susteren spent more than a decade at CNN, where she served as a legal analyst and co-host of “Burden of Proof” and hosted the news program “The Point.” She is an experienced breaking news anchor and has traveled the world - including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, North Korea, Sudan, and more - often with Presidents, Secretaries of State and Defense, and other leaders.

Van Susteren was part of the investigative team that won a first place National Headliner Award for the "Attack on America." Additionally, her legal analysis and contribution to the election coverage in 2000 earned her the American Bar Association’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Journalism. Prior to her career in journalism, Van Susteren was a criminal defense and civil trial attorney.

Van Susteren graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in economics, with distinction, from the University of Wisconsin. She earned a Juris Doctor and a Master of Law from Georgetown Law. She is the first Stuart Stiller Fellow at Georgetown Law Center and was awarded honorary Doctorates of Law from Georgetown and Stetson Law School. In 2016, the American News Women’s Club honored Van Susteren with the prestigious 22nd annual Excellence in Journalism award.

Van Susteren is the co-author of My Turn at The Bully Pulpit: Straight Talk About The Things That Drive Me Nuts. She lives with her husband John P. Coale in Washington, D.C.

Bob Schieffer, the anchor of CBS News' "Face the Nation," announced Wednesday that he will retire this summer after more than 50 years of working in journalism.
Schieffer, who is 78, has been with CBS News for 46 years. 2015 marked his 24th year anchoring "Face the Nation," which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.
"Because this is where my professional career began, this is where I wanted all of you to be the first to know, this summer I am going to retire," he said at a symposium at Texas Christian University.
He has interviewed every president since Richard Nixon as well as most of those who sought the office. Schieffer most recently interviewed President Obama last November.
Schieffer also moderated three debates for the Presidential Commission on Debates in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
Prior to joining CBS in 1969, Schieffer was a reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram where he was the first reporter from a Texas newspaper to report from Vietnam.
Schieffer has won virtually every award in broadcast journalism, including eight Emmys, the overseas Press Club Award, the Paul White Award presented by the TV News Directors Association, the Edward R. Murrow Award given by Murrow's alma mater Washington State University and in 2008 he was named a living legend by the Library of Congress. In 2005, his alma mater Texas Christian University named its journalism school in his honor and in 2013 named the College, in which the journalism school is located, the Bob Schieffer College of Communication. Schieffer is one of the few reporters in Washington to have covered all four of the major beats: the Pentagon, the White House, Congress and the State Department. He became the network's chief Washington correspondent in 1982 and was named the anchor and moderator of "Face the Nation", CBS News' Sunday public affairs broadcast, in 1991.
Schieffer anchored the Saturday edition of the "CBS Evening News" for 23 years. In March 2005, with the departure of Dan Rather, Schieffer served as interim anchor of "The CBS Evening News," until August 2006 - a period that saw a substantial increase in ratings.
