"The Talk" is coming to an End

TV NEWS   CBS  Soaps Talk shows

CBS has announced that daytime show "The Talk" will be coming to end in December.  The show launched in 2010, after replacing daytime show "As The World Turns" which ran from 1956 to 2010. It was part of a moment where networks were clearing out soaps.  The Guiding Light was canned in 2009 and replaced by a revival of Let's Make a Deal . ABC would go on to replace two of it's soaps the announcing in 2011.

The Talk  was made as a lower cost alternative to making soap opera programming and gave CBS a networked daytime talk show.  In concept, the show was  CBS doing their own version of The View , a few women around a table talking about stuff.  Though, as that show became more political "The Talk" was less political but did talk about issues.  Overtime, it shifted hosts and focus, experienced controversy and weathered the pandemic.   An interesting thing it did more in 2021 was add male hosts to its panel, making it different than "The View".

Soaps seemed to be on their way down, even more. NBC had moved their only soap Days of Our Lives to the streaming service Peacock in 2022 to make room for more news. Then a surprise news item popped up in  March 2024, CBS had already renewed Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, but there was news that CBS was developing a new daytime soap.

That's a surprise because the last new soap that premiered on network TV was 1999's Passions  which ended in 2007, when NBC decided to have another another hour of The Today Show.  The Gates was the title, a soap opera about a wealthy black family.  Of course, that did mean some more speculation.  CBS had just renewed two soaps so those weren't going, this didn't say Paramount Plus, and that meant , either a game show is going or "The Talk" and then thinking, would CBS can the game shows or the weakest link- The Talk?

Now it seems that "The Talk" is the one that's going.  CBS hasn't announced officially more about the soap, but December end for "The Talk" seems to make it feel like a January soap premiere. This does make an interesting change as this was a soap being worked on by Procter and Gamble 15 years after a soap being made by Procter and Gamble was canceled , now the talk show that replaced that is being replaced by a soap. It's also an interesting move to make a new soap when speculation was the there could come a time ABC and CBS would either cancel their last soaps or move them to sister streaming services.

Days of Our Lives fans did find something nice about new daily streaming episodes, no more having to worry about the network breaking away for either actual breaking news or random things that aren't really news, but the network feels they need to do even though they have a news streaming channel that could cover that. CBS soap fans (and game show fans) have the trouble of times when CBS does the same. Of course, with Paramount+ a viewer could watch there too, and gives P+ another hour of drama daily.

If that's the time slot holding, "The Talk" airs on CBS at 2pm ET/ 1c,  1 or 2pm  in the Mountain Time zone,  1pm in the west.  After ABC destroyed its 2pm ET slot after the end of "One Life to Life" and a failed talk show took its place, they put "General Hospital" there and gave an hour to local stations. Some stations like ABC owned stations on the East still air GH in the OG slot of 3pm ET, but in some markets General Hospital airs at 2pm/1c at the same time as "The Talk".  Now this could cause a soap race, but maybe not.  NBC did make "Days of Our Lives" flexible in where stations could air it, and that could let markets decide where the show could run and not be affected by running up against another soap. CBS could give this show a flexible slot to allow their stations a space to air it either earlier or later than GH in markets. Though CBS might feel "The Gates" would be a different audience grabber than GH.   That will be interesting to see.

The idea of a daily soap in "The Age of Streaming" (TM) isn't a bad one. Compared to a talk show, since we know all network shows end up on streaming, this allows a daily drama to be also on a streaming service and where as a talk show like "The Talk" relies on being current to a point, meaning an episode could become outdated on things quickly, soaps don't.

It is nice that CBS is trying something different instead of going with another daytime news department based show. They've done something different in late night and now trying a new daytime idea, or more returning to old format once thought to be on the decline.

Peanuts Thanksgiving and Christmas Special to air on PBS

News Peanuts

Previously on the blog, we told you that the Peanuts holiday specials were leaving ABC and going to Apple TV + exclusively.  It was move that wasn't  completely embraced  by people.  The "Great Pumpkin"  didn't air on TV this year, and was Apple TV Plus, there was a free two day window. They also offered  free windows for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  That free offering still requires an apple ID and  credit/debit card number that's not used for payment , but still.

Wednesday, it was announced that the Thanksgiving special and Christmas special will be airing on TV after all, the network being PBS.  Yes, that PBS. PBS will be airing "A Charlie Brown" Thanksgiving Sunday, November 22nd at 7:30e/ 6:30c.  " A Charlie Brown Christmas" will air Sunday, December 13th at 7:30/6:30c.

These specials will air on PBS and the PBS Kids channel (which is on many PBS sub channels and website/app) The specials will still be on Apple TV Plus with the free window dates (Thanksgiving November 25th to 27; Christmas December 11-13).  This is a good move and you will be seeing Peanuts specials un edited without ads on PBS!

Sadly, the traditional broadcasts of  "Mayflower Voyages", "I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown", and "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown" have been mentioned for anything.

The Walt Disney Company Buying Fox Assets

NEWSLINE   On the Money

After all the rumors and reporting, the official news is out today.  The Walt Disney Company has announced they will be purchasing assets of the 21st Century Fox Corporation.    Disney is buying these assets for $52.4 Billion  in stock.

First off What Disney is buying.
Fox Film and Movie studios  like 20th Century Fox.  FX Networks  (FX, FXX, and FXM) , Natural Geographic Networks.  Fox Sports Net (Regional Sports Networks)  Fox's stake in Hulu meaning they will have a controlling interest in the service.  They would also have Fox's current 39% stake in the  British company ,Sky.  (And 100% if Fox can buy the rest).  Fox's Asia pay tv company , Star.

    What Fox is keeping.
Fox will start a new company that will incorporate the  Fox Network (including the stations they own, Fox Sports 1 and 2 , Big Ten Network, Fox News Channel, and Fox Business.

Insight.

If approved , there are some anti-trust  things that could come up, since Disney would be one of the largest  content companies now.     With Disney's recently announced plans to make their own streaming service  , this would give them a large library of movies and TV Shows including popular shows like "The Simpsons".

Also Netflix may seem like it's not worried, but this could be a problem for them, they stand to lose a large amount of content.   Also could companies like Comcast , who owns large studios like Universal think about doing their own service too?  Read : Why Netflix has been doubling on making own content.

A New Block of Children's Broadcast TV

NEWS   Children's TV

This blog has written heavily about  former children's broadcast TV blocks and we've talked about the death of traditional broadcast TV blocks for children.  (Though Ion television kind of has one.)  So it's interesting and surprising to be writing about a new one coming July 1st.

It will be airing on Tribune's network , This TV (Sinclair is also , as of this writing in the midst of trying to buy the Tribune company) airing Weekdays 6AMET to 9AMET and weekends 7amet-10amet  (To find out if you get THIS TV  go here)  It will also be airing on some Sinclair stations  (mostly CW or My Network  TV stations) and their schedules will vary by market.   For example WUCW in Minneapolis will be airing the block at these times   to find your Sinclair station to see if the listings show the block you can check here.

The block first programming line up looks like this

Al Jazeera America shutting Down

Medialine News

The Cable news channel , Al Jazeera America, announced Wednesday that  it will be shutting down on April 30th.  After almost 2 1/2 years and 3 years after the big announcement that they were buying Current TV from Al Gore.

The reasoning per Al Jazeera America's website:

Al Jazeera America will shutter its cable TV and digital operations by April 30 of this year, the company announced Wednesday. The decision by the AJAM board was “driven by the fact that our business model is simply not sustainable in light of the economic challenges in the U.S. media marketplace,” said AJAM CEO Al Anstey.

The Network attracted alot of journalists to join it  such as John Seigenthaler (former NBC News anchor) , Ali Velshi (former CNN) , and others , but it's ratings were never as strong  as it's competitors.  It also had problems with carriers at the very start and recently a controversy over a report about  sports players alleged doping, which they defended as accurate.    The Company says they will expand digital operations in the U.S .  It is unknown what happens to the channel space: if it is removed all together, sold  One  America News seems to want it , or Al Jazerra English takes it's place.

ABC Family getting new name

ABC Family  TV NEWS

image: Disney
UPDATE  12/11 : The Date for name change is now set for January 12th , 2016   per this

ABC Family is making it's biggest change in it's life  since it was bought by Disney in 2001, after  over 25 years of having the name Family in it . (First as Family Channel, then Fox  Family)  They will be renaming the channel in January of 2016 , as Freeform.

 From the Disney Blog
ABC Family President Tom Ascheim announced today that ABC Family will be renamed and rebranded as Freeform in January 2016. The name, look, feel and attitude of the network will capture the nature of the Becomer audience and the modern way this audience generates and consumes media.
Viewers will be introduced to exciting new and original content while still enjoying their favorite ABC Family shows. Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, Young and Hungry and Baby Daddy return in early 2016 for their winter premieres alongside the world premieres of new original series Shadowhunters and Recovery Road.
The name Freeform speaks to the mindset and attitude of what the channel has defined as Becomers. Becomers are in high school, college and the decade that follows and are navigating the wonderful, fun, exciting and scary time in life when you experience the most firsts—first car, first apartment, first job, first love, first heartbreak—all the firsts that exist between who they are now and who they want to become.
This audience’s identity and experience are fluid as they explore endless possibilities and their passions take shape. Freeform personifies this fluidity and will deliver ideas, forms of content and ways of interacting with the brand. Freeform is inspired by the interconnection between content and audience; media and technology; interactive and linear; life stage and lifestyle and the way Becomers interact with them all.
Fans are encouraged to check out freeformfan.com to submit photos and videos that creatively express the word “freeform.” Submissions may be used as part of our ongoing launch campaign underscoring the new brand’s essence of collaboration and co-creation of content with our viewers.

Deadline reports that they will be keeping popular things like the 25 days of Christmas (a  holdover of the Fox Family days)  and keeping some part of the family friendly audience.

Opinion: A story about CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

Straight Forward  TV  CBS  Katie Couric Opinion
#JoshuaOnline  By Daniel for mychiller's media news
Yesterday , CBS announced that "60 minutes" correspondent, Scott Pelley will take over for Katie Couric on the "CBS Evening News" this summer.
Katie Couric took over with fanfare in Fall of 2006 , she was labeled the first woman solo permanent anchor of a US network's evening newscast on a weeknight.  She was changing from NBC'S Today show to the big evening news on CBS.
CBS Evening News has been in third place for years and years. It is hard to bring a show from 3rd to 1st. CBS was in problems after Dan Rather was forced down by the network.
Ms.Couric had things working against her from the start. First of, she was going to a 3rd place newscast with high expectations. NBC was stable at the time and still is at number 1, ABC was going through the post Jennings era and the bad hand of what happened to Bob Woodruff. ABC acted calm throughout their ordeal and found Gibson to be a fit.

The Media Opinion : The Tuscon shootings and the media

By Robberta S.  for mychiller
The events of Saturday, January 8th in Tuscon  where the shooting suspect, Jared Loughner, 22, is accused of assassinate , Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords , murdering 6 others , and wounding 14 more. The media took this a whole other direction. Right after the shooting , the sheriff blamed talk radio and "certain" tv hosts. The media took advantage of this.
