"The Talk" is coming to an End

TV NEWS   CBS  Soaps Talk shows

CBS has announced that daytime show "The Talk" will be coming to end in December.  The show launched in 2010, after replacing daytime show "As The World Turns" which ran from 1956 to 2010. It was part of a moment where networks were clearing out soaps.  The Guiding Light was canned in 2009 and replaced by a revival of Let's Make a Deal . ABC would go on to replace two of it's soaps the announcing in 2011.

The Talk  was made as a lower cost alternative to making soap opera programming and gave CBS a networked daytime talk show.  In concept, the show was  CBS doing their own version of The View , a few women around a table talking about stuff.  Though, as that show became more political "The Talk" was less political but did talk about issues.  Overtime, it shifted hosts and focus, experienced controversy and weathered the pandemic.   An interesting thing it did more in 2021 was add male hosts to its panel, making it different than "The View".

Soaps seemed to be on their way down, even more. NBC had moved their only soap Days of Our Lives to the streaming service Peacock in 2022 to make room for more news. Then a surprise news item popped up in  March 2024, CBS had already renewed Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, but there was news that CBS was developing a new daytime soap.

That's a surprise because the last new soap that premiered on network TV was 1999's Passions  which ended in 2007, when NBC decided to have another another hour of The Today Show.  The Gates was the title, a soap opera about a wealthy black family.  Of course, that did mean some more speculation.  CBS had just renewed two soaps so those weren't going, this didn't say Paramount Plus, and that meant , either a game show is going or "The Talk" and then thinking, would CBS can the game shows or the weakest link- The Talk?

Now it seems that "The Talk" is the one that's going.  CBS hasn't announced officially more about the soap, but December end for "The Talk" seems to make it feel like a January soap premiere. This does make an interesting change as this was a soap being worked on by Procter and Gamble 15 years after a soap being made by Procter and Gamble was canceled , now the talk show that replaced that is being replaced by a soap. It's also an interesting move to make a new soap when speculation was the there could come a time ABC and CBS would either cancel their last soaps or move them to sister streaming services.

Days of Our Lives fans did find something nice about new daily streaming episodes, no more having to worry about the network breaking away for either actual breaking news or random things that aren't really news, but the network feels they need to do even though they have a news streaming channel that could cover that. CBS soap fans (and game show fans) have the trouble of times when CBS does the same. Of course, with Paramount+ a viewer could watch there too, and gives P+ another hour of drama daily.

If that's the time slot holding, "The Talk" airs on CBS at 2pm ET/ 1c,  1 or 2pm  in the Mountain Time zone,  1pm in the west.  After ABC destroyed its 2pm ET slot after the end of "One Life to Life" and a failed talk show took its place, they put "General Hospital" there and gave an hour to local stations. Some stations like ABC owned stations on the East still air GH in the OG slot of 3pm ET, but in some markets General Hospital airs at 2pm/1c at the same time as "The Talk".  Now this could cause a soap race, but maybe not.  NBC did make "Days of Our Lives" flexible in where stations could air it, and that could let markets decide where the show could run and not be affected by running up against another soap. CBS could give this show a flexible slot to allow their stations a space to air it either earlier or later than GH in markets. Though CBS might feel "The Gates" would be a different audience grabber than GH.   That will be interesting to see.

The idea of a daily soap in "The Age of Streaming" (TM) isn't a bad one. Compared to a talk show, since we know all network shows end up on streaming, this allows a daily drama to be also on a streaming service and where as a talk show like "The Talk" relies on being current to a point, meaning an episode could become outdated on things quickly, soaps don't.

It is nice that CBS is trying something different instead of going with another daytime news department based show. They've done something different in late night and now trying a new daytime idea, or more returning to old format once thought to be on the decline.

ABC cancels "The Chew"

Daytime TV News ABC

The daytime food based talk show that replaced  ."All My Children" in 2011 , "The Chew" has been canceled and will be replaced by a new hour of "Good Morning America" airing at the same current time as "The Chew".   1pm/12c    This is not an instant change as "The Chew" will still run through the summer and ABC has not given a date for when "Good Morning America" will expand.

This is "GMA's" second bought with being on in the afternoon , there was the short-lived "Good Afternoon America" which was a tempoary replacement for "The Revolution" which ran for 6 months in 2012 after replacing "One Life to Live".  There's also, as of this writing,  it's unknown who will be hosting the program.

Recently, "The Chew" had a controversy with former  co-host and chef, "Mario Batali" left the show back in November 2017 due to sexual harassment allegations   and  as of this week is facing investigations for sexual assault.

ICONIC NBC DAYTIME DRAMA ‘DAYS OF OUR LIVES’ RENEWED FOR 51ST SEASON
The Tales From Salem Will Continue as Beloved Series Earns Pickup Following Recent Ratings Surge

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Feb. 11, 2016 — “Days of our Lives,” which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and is one of the most iconic programs in the history of daytime television, has been renewed for a new season by NBC.

The announcement was made by Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.

“NBC is incredibly proud of the legacy of ‘Days of our Lives’ and we couldn’t be more excited to brings its fans new stories for the 51st season,” Salke said. “In a business where having a show remain on the air for two seasons is considered a success, what ‘Days’ has achieved is extraordinary.”

So far this season, “Days of our Lives” is averaging a 0.90 rating, 6 share in women 18-49 and 2.901 million viewers overall in “most current” ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Through the first five weeks of the current quarter, “Days” has grown to a 0.93 rating, 6 share in women 18-49, up +6% versus its 0.88 for the same period last year, and 2.993 million viewers overall, up +15% versus its 2.601 million for the same weeks last year.

“Days of our Lives” has garnered 43 Daytime Emmy Awards, including 2015’s Outstanding Daytime Drama, and numerous nominations, as well as multiple People’s Choice Awards, GLAAD Media Awards, and Prism Awards. The show airs nationally on NBC in the United States and in more than 25 countries internationally.

“Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” For over a half-century, those words have introduced and underscored one of daytime drama’s rare mainstays.  NBC’s “Days of our Lives” first premiered as a half-hour drama in 1965 and expanded to an hour 10 years later.

The success of the series derives from its consistent commitment to excellence in writing and storytelling — supported by a diverse ensemble of performers — and its uncanny knack for anticipating viewer interests. With its mix of classic genre traditions and groundbreaking narratives reflecting modern life, “Days of our Lives” remains a perennial favorite among viewers of all ages.

“Days of our Lives” is set in the fictitious Midwestern town of Salem. The core families are the Bradys, Hortons and DiMeras, and the multi-layered storylines involve elements of romance, adventure, mystery, comedy and drama.

“Days of our Lives” is produced by Corday Productions Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television. Ken Corday is executive producer, with co-executive producers Greg Meng and Albert Alarr. Dena Higley and Josh Griffith are the head writing team.

The Lookback : Game Shows in Daytime that are not with us anymore

The Flashback  Game Shows  Daytime

This was a lost thought , that we've considered not looking back at game shows , but  then after much consideration and searching, we thought why not. (Yeah Why not?)  So , let's take a look at a few game shows , most of these not by magic didn't last long . (We picked these for good reason).

1.  Child's Play
Child's play was a game show that ran on  CBS from 1982 to 1983 ,but since it was a daily game show it racked up  258 episodes. (pretty good)
Judging by the name you  might think it involves Children. (Well, you were right) yep children gave definitions  of words  for our contestants to figure out.

 Exhibit A

They put the word on the screen ,  Can't play at home ...sigh
To the point , that was the game show , you had 2 rounds and a bonus round (so three rounds in math terms) ,  It was hosted by Bob Cullen  , a famous radio and TV guy he also almost hosted the 1972 revival of "The Price is Right" (the one on TV now , as of 2015, unless it was canceled and nobody told us ).
As we said , the game show didn't last long  only 1 season  it couldn't compete at the 10:30/9:30c slot   and CBS axed it. One thing about game shows is they  sometimes get made for other countries ,that happened to this one.
The Brits , did it as well.  London Weekend Television made  a version of it that broadcast from  1984-1988 hosted by Michael Aspel.   It also had Australian version, Russian , Greece, Spain ,Netherlands , Germany , and Indonesia.

2.   Dreamhouse
Now we go to ABC and here's an idea for a game show , you know some give away dates  (with figures ) , cars, trips (to Toledo)  , money (to buy stuff in Toledo)  but how about a Brand New House!  ( yeah!!!!!, does it come fully loaded?)    Dream House was that game show.
In 1968 on ABC (America's Network that is  not CBS) it was a daily game show , while it also had  a prime time weekly version for a while.
It was hosted by Mike Darow.  It had two couples  play against each other (to the death?)  in recall games to see who gets the right amount of points.
The winning couple in the final game, wins a room full of swanky early 70's furniture  (  I think)

                                      Joshuaonline when we sold furniture

Now , what about this house business ?   well the contestants who won got a new house , worth $40,000 (this is in 1968's money)  plus $7,000 for land , or they could have $20,000 in cash.  Anyway it lasted from 1968 to 1970 .  It was reported that some of the houses won , were not finished (oops) ,and sometimes the former contestants found out they needed more than the $7,000 given in the contest, hence the show added the $20,000 prize option. The game was hurt by this already  so it was axed and replaced by ... "All My Children" ( see here at JOL it was always ends up back to soap operas).
Then  in 1983 it came back , now to NBC, (America's Network, that is also not CBS) with now host Bob Eubanks .   Now the couples (yes still couples)  competed for a house worth  $100,000 (in 1983 money).  Also contestants had to get a combination correct (they had to work hard for the house) if they got it right they would win the house, they didn't get it right they would the classic - Come back the next day and try again ,against another couple  if they won that day , they could try the combination again and see if they won the house. (rinse then repeat)

                          I think they won !

It ended after about a year  because it wasn't the best in ratings (could have been worse, ask ABC) it was replaced by Scrabble.

3. Scrabble
Ok, this is not a new idea but why not take a board game ( though not Operation) and make it in to a game show .(The last word of board game is game)  This is our longest running of the soaps in this article began on NBC in 1984 and ended in 1990. It was hosted by Chuck Woolery.

Youtube... will also comeback to haunt you
 4.  GO
Again with NBC ( We better not have to say to NBC again this article) , GO was a game show that didn't go to long ( ha ha ha , worked hard on that didn't you?)  It was created by Bob Stewart (also the creator of Chain Reaction)  and ran from October  1983 to  February 1984. It was hosted by Kevin O Connell (who people in Buffalo might know as  a weather man ).  The contestants were two teams including one of the players being a celebrity.  The goal was to play the game to get to 1,500 points , which ever team go those points made it to the jackpot round where they  had change to win up to $20,000 ( if they made it to double jackpot).
(Just for fun , there also was a soap stars week in  November of  83)
It was canceled after a few months due to it's 12PMET /11ct slot , many NBC stations would preempt  for newcasts ( it could have waited til 5 , you know NBC affiliate , seesh) so it was hard for it attract an audience if people in some markets didn't even know it existed.

5. Time Machine
And finally (thank goodness) , our last game show "Time Machine" which ran on NBC ( of course it did) , from January 1985 to April 1985 (Time machine huh?) .
It was a game show bulit with mini games  that fit into it's focus on history and pop culture. After the first month they changed the format  , for instance instead of the champion playing the mini games , the new challengers faced each other off to meet the champion later.  They played 3 mini games and there was no prize bank anymore.  Then the winner meets the champion in the champion round.

                             Time Machine!!!

That's our look back at short lived game shows (well except for that one)  you win a brand new un finished house but you did get swanky 60's furniture  and a time machine.  Comeback next time at Noon (except in the 230 markets that are airing newscasts).  Thanks for reading,

Welcome back All My Children and One Life to live

SOAPS   TOLN

Here at Joshuaonline we've been writing posts about news of soaps being canceled and finales coming soon, we did for "One Life to Live" in January 2012  , we did for "All My Children" in September 2011  .   Soaps being canceled was a yearly report  from 2007-2011 pretty much as daytime  is being transfused into talk shows and other cheap (cost)  programming . "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" were also reported to be moving online back in 2011,though that seemed lost by mid-2012 we did get the official announcement .

So now today April 29th 2013, they are  both back  now online.
Here's how you can watch it    , on Hulu  you can watch on any  computer  here (All My Children) , (One Life To Live)  . If you have Hulu Plus you can watch on a mobile device  , and on a Roku ®  box .

You can watch the full episodes after the jump , they are 30 minutes now

Good Morning America Afternoon

TV Daytime ABC
ABC announced that daytime show "The Revolution" will be ending after it launched back in January as a replacement to "One Life to Live" the show was suffering with low ratings. To replace it a 3rd hour of "Good Morning America" will be taking the slot over the summer.  In the fall this will make room for Katie Couric's new show to take the slot .  The 3rd Hour of GMA will be produced by the same staff as the rest of GMA.
Soap fans have something  happy about : "General Hosptial" will be renewed as well.
Katie Couric's show will be airing on many ABC -owned -stations , as the show is syndicated.
So the General Hospital will be around for  a 50th birthday, and this is one of first years since 2005 where a soap has not been canceled.

Are Soap opera's dying?: As the world turns gets cancelled

Yesterday (Dec.8th)  CBS announced that in September 2010 that the soap 'As the world turns' is ending the show is a daytime soap opera  the show has been running on CBS since April 2nd 1956. This is CBS's second cancellation of a soap this year after 'Guiding light' was canceled in April of this year and ended in September. CBS replaced that slot with a new version of the game show 'Let's Make a deal'. To wonder what CBS will do with the slot mostly likely will not be a new soap opera. What does this mean to the soaps as a whole  NBC has only 1 'Days of our Lives' and after September 2010 unless more cancellations happen CBS will have 2 'The Young and the Restless' and the 30 minute soap 'The Bold and the Beautiful' . ABC has only 3 soaps 'Genral Hospital', 'One Life to Live' and 'All my Children'. Though the Proctor and Gamble which produces  the show says there are actively looking for another venue for the show. ABC says they will remain committed to Soaps. But the question is Are Soaps dying off? Many can point to what's happening and say yes it they are. Soap Ratings have been going down in the past decade. Like now the Highest rated Soap 'Young and the Restless' is at 3.5 million viewers as of last week  in the 1999-2000 THE leading soap was 'Young and the Restless at 6.8 million viewers. and in 1979-1980 season the leading soap was 'General Hospital' at 9.9 million viewers. Also no new soaps were made or have premiered at least on American Broadcast TV since 1999 and NBC's 'Passions'  which ran on NBC from (1999-2006) then moved to Direct TV  from (2006-2008).  And replaced with Local  Programming due to the addition of a 4th our of the 'Today Show'. While Competition in local markets are local newscasts and Syndicated daytime programming  which many FOX, CW,MY NETWORK TV AND non affiliated channels buy up instead of network tv programs.  But As  antoher soap falls well see what CBS does.
