CBS This Morning to become CBS Mornings

CBS TV News

CBS announced Tuesday that their current breakfast time show CBS This Morning will be rebranded as CBS Mornings from Tuesday, September 7th.  This coincides with other changes to the program including a new studio and co-host.

CBS Mornings  is said to be continuing the mission CBS This Morning had to be a more news-based morning show versus it's NBC and CBS rivals.  They want to expand featuring reporting during the 2nd hour (8am) with things news, sports, etc , and notably culture pieces with now former co-host, Anthony Mason.

A  big change will also be a change of location, CBS will be doing their morning show from Times Square, the former home of  MTV's Total Request Live , the studio was used by CBS during the 2020 election.  The current studio was launched with this morning show in 2012, after a move from 5th Avenue.

Another change will be a new co-host joining Gayle King, the only of the original CBS This Morning Trio from 2012 to still be on the show, and Tony Dokoupil will be  Nate Burelson.  CBS This Morning Saturday, will be rebranded as CBS Saturday Morning will still have  Jeff Glor, Dana Jacobson, and Michelle Miller as hosts, and CBS Sunday Morning will continue as is with Jane Pauley.

A preview was played on the program seems to indicate the show will be taking an influence from the popular Sunday series on CBS, which unlike CTM on weekdays is #1 in ratings against ABC and NBC.

This is many in a long list of names and morning shows for CBS going back to the early days in 1950's. CBS has used  The Morning Show, Good Morning! , The CBS Morning News, Morning (which ironically they seem be harkening back to with this move), The CBS Morning News, The Morning Program, CBS This Morning (The old one) , The Early Show, CBS This Morning (the current one).

While CBS This Morning has seen some good ratings days  , it's still the third place show out of three and CBS wants to try and not be, morning shows have become the main core of the main 3 networks' focus as a way to make sure viewers still tune in and get the sweet ad money. These are the money making shows and with ratings down across the three they are trying to stick something to hope it works.   (Plus, they have more competition with cable news channels  and local stations that have local news past 7 AM that  in much of the country are local and live when the network shows are taped delayed out side the east coast as an more attractive option.)

CBS always seems to be trying to reinvent their morning shows with name changes, format changes, and staff changes.  (Gayle King as seemingly taken the Harry Smith role of being a constant while chair shuffle around her) Hoping that something will stick, their morning is somewhat more enjoyable than Today and GMA to me,  it's good they did try a different option that just being GMA/Today 3 , and it seems they want to stick with that while hoping a new name and look will do something. Will it? I don't know, maybe they'll change the name in a few years ago, and the Early Show is back or something.

Anyway, Press Release after the Jump , the new "CBS Mornings" starts September 7th on CBS at 7AM (in most time zones)

CNN's New Day : Review

CNN  Morning Shows

New Day CNN.jpg      CNN's much anticipated  new morning show  officially started yesterday, with it's hosts  former ABC News anchor and reporter, Chris Cuomo,  Kate Bolduan , and Michaela Pereira.  We decided to review the 2nd day ,to see if  any first  jitters would be less into account.  The Program starts with   the hosts telling you what's coming next , and a voice overs by James Earl Jones. The program starts in bright studio with brick like walls all 3 hosts are sitting together on  desk.  The first hour is mostly updating you on news stories , with some reporters doing reports live or taped.   Cuomo and Bolduan alternate the first few headlines then Pereira does the last few . Unlike "Today Show or Good Morning America" there is alot  more news content in the program .   Around 6:50 AMET  something happens that  either is for premiere week or a permanent feature , the program keeps on going  around 7AMET  it's introduced as being part of "30 Minutes of commercial free news " , that's an interesting feature the networks don't do or would even try to do.
In the 2nd hour they go more long form on the stories , talking with guests  and reporters about some select stories. The set has a couch on it  , though it's only used when doing lighter segments  for example when "Early Start" co-anchor John Berman joins the show at the bottom of each hour to share.  Unlike "Today" or "GMA" which de-camp to the couch after 7:30AMET.   The program ,as promised , doesn't have a cooking segment , or concerts that's more like "CBS This Morning " , sister morning show "Morning Express" or other CNN morning shows in the past.  The 3rd hour is close to the 2nd in style.
The program does have a news heavy agenda ,that CNN has been trying to enforce while at the same time they do fill in with lots of lighter stories.  The hosts seem like they like each other , hopefully they aren't faking .  It also has  good feel with some regular segments for business news , weather, and sports.  I think CNN has made some good ideas here and hopefully they keep that formula going.  It does look that they are keeping their promise of "not trying to reinvent the wheel" , since there not a lot of ways you can go with a morning show especially in this US TV market where there are so many of them .  The hosts  do work well with each other so far , I think that will be even more after they've been doing the show for awhile. It maybe because it's not an election year but the program doesn't seem to top loaded with politics , or any lighter stories though the mix could be improved a bit more , but that probably is dependent on what the news cycle is.
I say give it  try to see what you think , airs weekdays on CNN from 6-9AMET that's 3-6 AM PT , since it's  cable news.

after the jump  there's more

CBS This Morning , 11 months later

Straight Forward Reviews CBS Morning Shows
 By Skyler
CBS This Morning     It's  about a year  since CBS  changed to their new morning show , "CBS This Morning " , I gave a review the first day it aired,  in which I gave it a high marking.  Now it's 11 months later, the almost 1 year mark, what are my thoughts as the show has settled in.  I still think that it's a good quality program for morning television , the formatting and content has not really changed since  , there was a host change with Norah O' Donnell taking Erica Hill's spot.  As compared to "Good Morning America" and "Today Show" ,the CBS approach has been more news and discussion  and less on  why Lindsey Lohan keeps getting arrested or how to make a cake. They still have your local weather person doing your local weather instead of a national weather person being wacky and using a low scale map , then toss over to your local station.
Over all CBS has done a good job , fixing the problem the Early Show from 1999-2011 had trying out soften the other two national network shows, and built upon Early Show of 2011-2012 with more news. Giving viewers a different choice , which was needed.  CBS has always struggled in the Morning show world but I think this show gives them proper footing  The show hasn't got alot or press it's first year , probably because the "Today Show" story is so juicy not to cover ,but that maybe a good thing as long as CBS doesn't have exceptions of getting first  in 3 years ( It look GMA 16 years) , they will be good to go.
In the morning the content on "This Morning" is much for rich and the news doesn't stop because the clock says 7:30AM.  and it's interviews are pretty good.  The hosts click very well together each bring a style and personality to the program, Norah O Donnell with her news background, Charlie Rose with his interview style, and Gayle King with her energetic and  good interview style.  It also shows the best of CBS' journalism.
The ratings still have it in 3rd place but anything can happen , if "Good Morning America" now beats "The Today Show" then  CBS could move on up a few years time.

"CBS This Morning" airs on CBS Mondays-Saturdays  7-9AM ET ,taped-delayed to other time zones.

CNN morning change ?

Straight Forward
Written By Skyler
The New York Post 's page six has a report that CNN may be making changes in the morning slot.
With Erin Burnett , who just started her show  "OUTFRONT" last year and CNN currently has two morning shows . "Early Start" and "Starting Point" both programs started Earlier this year. Page Six says that incoming president Jeff Zucker may end up moving Burnett to the mornings.
I wouldn't that's a good idea, both these programs are young and still need a chance to grow, plus over hauling things on day one is not a good idea.  It's also not right to Soledad O' Brien , who currently hosts from 8-10AMET (Starting Point). To make a good morning show , you need to build an audience to view , you can't build that  in  a year  it takes time for people to get used to a new morning habit . Erin Burnett has not had the best ratings but her show is a good fit in the evenings between  the  serious Wolf Blitzer and whatever Anderson Cooper is doing.
It would also make me wonder what the president of CNN (the channel) would feel about his programming decisions being subverted?

2 Media Things for you to know for 7-16-2012

Media
By Skyler

1.  MSNBC.com is gone (for now) , On July 15th  1996, cable news channel, MSNBC was launched Mircosoft and NBC, so was their website, now on July 15th , 2012 Msnbc.com is gone. NBC has taken full control of the website and renamed it NBCNEWS.COM .  The 2 reasons I can factor why NBC NEWS did this , is A) they wanted full control of their web presence , and B) MSNBC TV has moved more to a left leaning opinion channel that they wanted to separate the MSNBC and NBC NEWS NAME, msnbc to get a new site in 2013.
related link  : A question : Is NBC NEWS trying to distance itself from msnbc?

2. CNN  changes morning hosts. CNN's morning show "Early Start" , which started earlier this year , is changing co-host Ashleigh Banfield  with former ABC NEWS reporter ,John Berman. He joins Zoraida Sambolin as co-host.  "Early Start" airs on CNN Weekdays  5-7AMET. 2-4AM PT.  Banfield is moving to a daytime news position on CNN.

AND SO ..I heard this : NBC could be preparing to make Ann Curry Step down

NBC  MORNING SHOWS TV
  By Skyler

The NewYork Times is reporting  that NBC is preparing to replace Ann Curry on the "Today Show". Ms. Curry started as the co-host as replacement  for Meredith Vieira  last year , she has been on the Today show since the late 90's as a news desk anchor during the Couric-Lauer era (1997-2006) ,and the Lauer-Vieira era (2006-2011).
There could be an assortment of reasons one including, when GMA(Good Morning America) beat it a few times back in April and May.
The other reason cities from the New York times story:
“She got her dream job, and she doesn’t want to let it go,” one of the people said. But Ms. Curry has also expressed dissatisfaction with “Today,” where her journalistic curiosities sometimes clash with morning television realities. Accordingly, she may be moved into a foreign correspondent role, reflecting her strengths in reporting from disasters both man-made, like the ethnic killings in Darfur, and natural, like the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
The morning show arena, except for CBS and some cable shows , doesn't have a larger focus on news as much as lifestyle , celebrities, musical acts  they are saying as  challenge for Ms.Curry , who was  a foreign affairs reporter. That's if that is correct, then we have the other side saying that it was "dream job"  seen as passed over in 2006 when Katie Couric was leaving  , and  the job going to an "out-sider" Meredith Vieira.
The idea is who would replace her , also comes  to mind, and when?  NBC ,which has broadcast rights to the Olympics  , and the Today Show will do as it normally does and move to the host city of the Olympics , this is year in London. With that starting in late July  time is almost up. (If this report is true).
Mr. Lauer has said that the ratings have put “Today” on notice. In early April, just before the win by “G.M.A.,” he renewed his contract at “Today,” putting to rest months of speculation about how badly the show would be damaged if he departed. Ms. Curry’s departure, similarly, could hurt “Today;” if viewers perceive that she was forced out, they may become alienated and literally turn it off as a result.
Yes , if it's seen as a push out that would badly hurt the "Today Show" , and people could leave to GMA, CBS This Morning, a cable station, or local news that's maybe running at the same time.  It also could hurt the person who replaces Curry.  Perceiving the show as the one that got rid of Ann Curry because they got beat by GMA a couple times.

Good Morning Cable :FOX AND Friends to Expand.

FOX NEWS CHANNEL  Cable TV  TV NEWS  Morning TV
  By Skyler
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that "FOX and Friends", FOX News Channel's morning show  is expanding into 5AMET , it will called "FOX and Friends First" a name that the network used from 2001-2008 for it's 6AMET hour. The 5AMET hour will be hosted by Fox & Friends Weekend" hosts Dave Briggs and Clayton Morris. Fox News' Heather Childers, Ainsley Earhardt, Heather Nauert, Juliet Huddy, Julie Banderas, Anna Kooiman, Arthel Neville, Jamie Colby and Patti Ann Browne will also contribute to co-hosting the new hour. The main hosts, will still be on from 6-9AMET.   This is a trend of cable news channels starting earlier ... MSNBC started with "First Look" in the early 2000's , which still airs at 5amET, "Way To Early" started at 5:30AMET , CNN started 5am ET LIVE , last year with AM:Wake up Call and now it's the first hour it's first morning show" Early Start".

CBSs new morning show starts today

CBS   Morning Shows
This morning , morning television has  a new addition , "CBS This Morning" which replaced the "Early Show".  It so far is a big difference to the old  show and the others , NBC'S "Today Show" and ABC'S 'Good Morning America' , it starts  with a mash up of the day's top stories called "Eye Opener" . It's anchoring setup is different as well Charlie Rose, Erica Hill , and Gayle King all stared the show off, then after the "Eye Opener"  it was just Rose and Hill, King returns in the second hour. The desk is not square or rectangle ,it's round with a CBS eye in the middle,  and the anchors sit  across from each other instead of next to each other. "This Morning" removes some of the many features on the other morning shows have made use off for years, the news update desk and anchor is no longer a feature, the national weather , which was removed during the last months of the "Early Show", is gone, going outside  and having people stand around is also not there.
The Studio is a wonderful improvement , the real brick, the objects on the shelves, and the coloring is very inviting and also shows the tone of the show.  It also adds a  flavor with in-studio interviews of CBS NEWS correspondents . The 3 host format does need  bit more work to adjust the balance , but  that looks easy enough. The most seeming difference a viewer could tell was the show didn't go into the lifestyle area that many other shows rely upon, the  anchors didn't do much witty-banter and cheesy lines. "60 minutes" stories, politics , an interview with Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) ,they also had singer Melissa Etheridge to discuss issues of the day.

CBS' New try at mornings : Coming Soon

CBS  TV
By Skyler M for mychiller media and TV
CBS NEWS  has been in the process of change with it's morning show hours . "The Early show" , which started November 1st  1999 , has been in 3rd place from the stop. Behind NBC's "Today Show" and ABC'S "Good Morning America". This year the "Early Show" changed to anchors Erica Hill and Chris Wragge. In the summer the show changed formats removing the  cooking, the celerity news and other so-called fluff. Last month, CBS announced the "The Early Show", CBS's 8th try at a morning show and one of the longest running" will end in January. For a new morning show, which got it's name today "CBS This Morning" hosted by Erica Hill , who is the lone-carry over,  PBS' Charlie Rose who will also still do his talk show, and Gayle King , who left her Oprah Network and radio show around the announcement.
