The Rugrats Very First Episode

Rugrats

It's a Sunday morning in August and it's 1991, the cable network Nickelodeon had something planned that day. The network finished its morning rerun of Inspector Gadget and at 10AM eastern they premiered their first own cartoon, which they would dub as Nicktoons,  called Doug. This would be the start of what were their first 3 original nicktoons.  Nick had gotten into original programming, meaning they were making programming for themselves and not doing reruns or buying shows from somewhere else.

It was pretty wild that in 1991 they , a cable network, were doing this. It's even more wild they were going to do it three times in the same day, that Sunday  I can see the logic of launching them on a Sunday. The networks held a spot on Saturdays and Nickelodeon wasn't ready for that; they would defeat the networks their own way. The shows would also re-air  the week  and even that Sunday night on Nick at Nite for the non-heathens who went to church. (We're going to remove that line right, right?)

At 10:30AM eastern, they aired their 2nd Nicktoon, and that would be Rugrats.  Each original Nicktoon sets a stone of what Nickelodeon was trying to do. Doug wasn't the kind of show ABC, NBC( who was about to exit) , CBS, or even FOX were looking for. It's about an average boy and the stories aren't him in space, there's no aliens, he's not in a band that solves mysteries, and his dog might be a little more sentient than a real dog, but the dog doesn't talk. It was slice-of-life story telling with interesting characters that were less average than Doug, but still somewhat a grounded show.  It would eventually inspire the idea of having more cartoons like this, but it wasn't something notable before this.  Ren and Stimpy , the 3rd cartoon of that day, would be the show that feels the closest to retro cartoons and one starring talking animals. It also feels the most Nickelodeon of the shows introduced here. It's not a show that would have made to NBC (who was leaving at the time), CBS, and ABC. FOX probably would have maybe?  They didn't.

That brings us to Rugrats ,  This show's premise on paper is  about babies and toddlers who can talk to each other, and they get into adventures. The adventures, at least at first, weren't that big. It took the idea of small things to us and made them bigger. The mall is just a mall, but to them it's an entire wild place to do something for a quest. This is also  a show other networks wouldn't have touched. Yes, they did do series where your favorite characters that you know and love were either kids or baby-fied. (That's a word I think)   There's Tom and Jerry Kids , The Flintstones Kids , A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (which is actually great and only in this list as an example), The Muppet Babies which is sadly not about Kermit and Ms. Piggy raising their young family together. There was Baby Looney Tunes , which came out after all these other things, and Toddler Terminator which is not real ,and I made it up.  The concept of babies doing anything in a main role at all, probably the closest before this was Fantastic Max (from 1988).  That show had a talking baby but also had that baby doing real adventures and sci-fi stuff. This was different.

Peanuts: There's No Place like Home, Snoopy

Peanuts

Another Peanuts special? Yes.  The Apple TV specials produced by WildBrain continue.  Of note, Peanuts has been sold again, kind of.  Previously, since 2017 Peanuts was sold to Canadian media company DHX now known as WildBrain.  That meant they owned 80% with 20% still being owned by the Schulz family.  There is still a tight grip by the family on it.  WildBrain sold a share to Sony Music Entertainment Japan  49% of the 80% share would be owned by them.  In 2025, WB (I'm doing shorthand) sold their share to Sony Pictures Entertainment so SMEJ and SPE own 80% now. This doesn't change much of what's going on with Peanuts and the streaming specials by WildBrian and streaming on Apple TV (no longer Plus) will continue. (Unless you are reading this in the future and everything has moved to Tubi or ESPN or whatever)

Sorry for that, but did want to put some news in this.  This special is the 53rd Peanuts animated special and 8th for Apple TV (the streaming service that is named after Apple TV and used to have a Plus).  From July 31, 2026.  It's called "Snoopy Presents: There's No Place Like Home, Snoopy" and as always the "Snoopy Presents" title bugs me  and always will, unless I get abducted and my brain has been swapped.  The rest of the title, at least, feels more Peanuts style, even if they went with Snoopy instead of Charlie Brown.

The special starts with some Woodstock stuff.  A good way to lead us to some Snoopy flying his doghouse stuff.  It's a pretty long sequence of mostly no dialogue. Eventually it leads to Sally Brown and Charlie  Brown working on making a yard sell.  Snoopy even has some stuff to sell.  Charlie Brown  has stuff to sell, but he's kind of attached. Sally is oddly efficient and taking command which is odd to me.

Sally's selling seems to do well.  This special decides to remember Milo, one of the Goose Eggs. A baseball team of younger kids Charlie Brown ran into when he was running away from the EPA after he bit a tree.  They really haven't been seen in a long time in Peanuts media.  Snoopy has a hard time selling his stuff as it seems nobody has any taste and he storms off.  Charlie Brown is attached to his stuff and really doesn't seem to want to sell it.
You've heard of red shirt Shaggy, well here's red shirt, Charlie Brown/ Copyright WildBrain

That will come into play later.  Charlie Brown goes in the house too and the sale is over.  That's when Snoopy finds out the plot of this special. Sally has sold his doghouse. She doesn't remember who she sold it to either.  The pop style song with montage of Snoopy missing his doghouse is not something I was expecting.  It's little jarring, not a bad song per say, it is a jarring for something.  I also do question the need to have a whole montage of Snoopy loving his doghouse, I think that's already understood.

Are you sure it's not just invisible? / Copyright WildBrain

Woodstock and some other birds try to make him a new dog house, but it's made with sticks and not every strong for a Snoopy.  Charlie Brown decides to help him and buy a new doghouse. Snoopy doesn't like any single doghouse in that store which is the conveniently unnatural doghouse store it seems.

I do like this special seems to be more focused on Charlie Brown, it's kind of nice to see him not pushed to the side here. Even with the Snoopy stuff.  There's a good focus on him in this and it's kind of fun. Charlie Brown and Snoopy decide to go on the hunt to just find the doghouse.  They run into Peppermint Patty and Marcie who don't have doghouse. There's also a long awkward pause.
Who is that? / Copyright Peanuts

There's another montage of Snoopy looking around with Charlie Brown and not finding the dog house. Rerun is there for a moment too, we point and smile then he's gone and we move on. We also get a Lucy getting licked by a dog germs moment. (They are playing the greatest hits)  Sadly, no doghouse.  They get another leads with Milo who bought a bunch of stuff, including things to make Snoopy feel more anguish. He does have the doghouse that he and the other Goose Eggs  into a club house.  Milo refuses to give it back.
They've gone by the "no givesy-backsy" rule/ Copyright WildBrain

Charlie Brown ends up finding Franklin who gives him the home is where the heart is thing. That to make him not seem too wise they had him get it from a cereal box. That gives Charlie Brown an idea to give that stuff he didn't want to give up earlier (see) to the Goose Eggs for the doghouse back.  Then  he was able to present it to Snoopy for a great return.  What a ..what do you mean there's like 5 more minutes left?  Ohh  well they to take off the stuff the Goose Eggs put on the house and it collapses.

Then it seems everyone else has come to help rebuild Snoopy's house.  They use that song again. Snoopy's doghouse is fine and alright again.  They say the title. Then Snoopy decides to sleep in Charlie Brown's bed with Charlie Brown.    That's it.
Good night/ Copyright Peanuts

One thing to note, this special is shorter than the past specials for Apple TV have been. It's 31 minutes. The extra 5 minutes you see on Apple TV are credits in different languages.  It's slightly longer than older TV specials.  I do think this was good decision.   This special, like a lot of Peanuts specials, does have some filler moments, but I think having them be longer made them have more stuff going on that didn't fit. The previous special at summer camp  was a little too long.

The animation here was different too, it looked more like "The Snoopy Show" the WildBrain Peanuts show on Apple TV.   It does make one wonder if it was a just a special episode of that show or not. I like how it looked. I do like how the past specials looked in the art style they were going for, but I think this charming in its own way.   I liked how the sequence where Snoopy was looking for house looked.

My personal look at these newer specials is that one problem I have with them is they feel they skew way too young in how they feel.   I'm not a person who says Peanuts isn't something that children can read and watch, but these always feel they are going out of their way to skew to really young children.  "The Snoopy Show" series really has the feeling that it would be a show for  Nick Jr.  Peanuts was always something really for a general audience, because it started in newspapers.

The story was fine and the way it was done is great for a really young kid to get into Peanuts. The idea was done better in the strip itself where Snoopy's house burned down and he had to deal the aftermath of that. I think Charlie Brown's arc in the special was fine, but I think something , again about all these Apple specials is that they so seem to something to character that seems a little off.

I found the use of the Goose Eggs, mostly Milo, interesting but also kind of a giveaway and then having Franklin give advice was kind of random. I always feel these specials have a story then try to put Peanuts characters into the story and fit them in their way and not the other way around where it's story made for Peanuts.  This one is stranger as a I said,  Peanuts did the whole Snoopy losing his dog house in a much more visceral way  in the strips in 1966 , so they had a groundwork if they didn't want to follow that exactly, they'd at least have something of an idea to fit the characters in the roles.

Yeah and there's a moral of home is where the heart is, and not the home itself. Which is fine, but a little simplified, again feeling like it was for preschoolers.  Yeah a house is a house and stuff is stuff, the real thing that makes it a home isn't that and that's a nice message.  It's not a message you'd go and say to someone whose house just burnt down or something.

The song they used twice was a little surprising. It's not the kind of song you expect in Peanuts. It also was kind of the nose for the message.

Did I hate it? No.  Did I love it? No.  I think it was fine, it's pretty alright as a special for Peanuts and feels like it works well for young children.  The other part of me that just loves seeing Peanuts characters likes seeing Peanuts characters so it was fine for that.  It's good for family viewing and hopefully leads people into watching older Peanuts media and reading the strips which is something I always want, new Peanuts fans.

That's it for now, tune in next time when I accidently sell a priceless diamond for 5 cents.

Fall TV 2026: CBS Fall Line Up

CBS TVFall2026  Upfronts

CBS is usually a network where changes to their line up are minimal,  but this year there are some notable changes.  Their long running Monday night comedies , the night that was once home to shows like Everybody Loves Raymond and ,recently, The Neighborhood is going away.  With The Neighborhood and DMV being canceled, they will not be replaced with new series.  Instead, the network is moving up FBI  and CIA.  True crime series Harlen Coben's Final Twist will finish out the night.

Thursdays are also getting a shift.  Long-running sitcom Ghosts will be moved to mid-season, the network says the show will still  have a full 22-episode season and will have hour-long Halloween and Christmas specials. Matlock has also been pushed to mid-season.  Following the new season of Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage is a new comedy, Eternally Yours, from the show runners of  "Ghosts".  Meanwhile, following Elsbeth is a new drama from the creators of that series, Cupertino

Tuesday nights continue to be "NCIS" nights with a new installment joining  the line up. NCIS: New York will air between NCIS and NCIS: Origins.  NCIS: Sydney returns in the mid-season.

Other consistencies will be Wednesday night for "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race"; Fridays with Sheriff Country, Fire Country, and Boston Blue.  Sundays are still 60 Minutes, Marshalls, and Tracker.

CBS will add in a new drama in mid-season with Einstein. In other notes for the network,  they will be simulcasting the Nickelodeon "Kids' Choice Awards" (November 14) and for the first time, "The Price is Right' gets a live special.   MTV Video Music Awards will air on the network on September 27.

The decisions are being made about the fates of many different TV series. This is our annual list that will be updated frequently as news about different broadcast networks shows comes in and what their status is for the next season. This list primarily focuses on scripted series as those tend to get their announcements done in due time before the May upfronts. Though other non-scripted series due end up in the list eg: 60 Minutes, since they are centerpieces of a network's line up. I will include a list of unscripted series too, but in some cases they are either renewed at various times. summer series also aren't part of the main lists as that is out of the main seasonal part of the year.
