Halloween: The Addams Family: Halloween Special

Halloween

In our journey on finding random things on Tubi (at the time of writing this was on there, not sure if it  is at the time of publishing) we've found  at 1977 special with The Addams Family.  One of my favorite adaptations from the comics by Charles Addams was  the 1964 TV series, and this is special is based from that.  "The Addams Family: Halloween Special" or "Halloween with the New Addams Family" (which is a title, why is there a new there, when the new Addams Family series didn't even come out yet)

The special does have the cast of the 1964 series, mostly, like John Astin (Gomez), Carolyn Jones (Morticia) , Jackie Coogan(Uncle Fester), Ted Cassidy(Lurch), Lisa Loring  (Wednesday) Ken Weatherwax (Pugsley) and Felix Silla (as cousin Itt).

It first aired on  October 30, 1977 on NBC, which is a different network than which aired the series. being ABC.  This must have been a surprise to the people who watched the '64 series in black and white now seeing things in color, it's kind off in a way.  They also chose to do theme without words and little off putting, so I guess it works for the Addams Family.

We also see that the characters have aged, but Gomez and Morticia has seemed to stay ageless.  To be a little dower, this was the last time Jones would play Morticia as she would pass away in 1983 from cancer at the age of 53.

Needs a third person here for a joke/ Copyright MGM

Gomez is going away to meet with his lodge in Tombstone, Arizona (where else?) so I'm glad our Addams Family reunion special here won't have one of main actors for the special that's smart.  Anyway, Gomez's brother Pancho (played by Henry Darrow) is staying with them and Gomez worries that  his brother will take his wife away from him.  Ohhhhh (ohhh)

The special does remember that Gomez and Morticia's love is tight.   Back to Pancho,
he's playing with the kids and Uncle Fester. What I mean by kids are Wednesday and Pugsley, I mean Wednesday Jr. and Pugsley Jr.  which is a decision and one that opens more questions than I want to ask.  He's going to tell them the legend of cousin Shy. (Good, I hope something happens, because this thing is 10 minutes in and nothing has happened in this 74 minute special.)

Juniors/ Copyright MGM

Cousin Shy's story sounds like Linus hearing about Santa getting confused thinking up the Great Pumpkin,  and there's a boy who wanted to find out if Cousin Shy was real and he carved a face on the pumpkin and talks to him through pumpkin and how he'll leave gifts under good kids scarecrows. So really, Linus' story is real. (run!)

The MGM lion shows up and Gomez leaves in a car, he's on this trip until 6PM, the next day. (It makes it funnier that he's acting like he's leaving for longer)   Meanwhile, the plot shows up, to some guys watching the same special. They apparently are crooks who want the Addams Family fortune. (Random)
The proper way to watch this special/ Copyright MGM

This is a Halloween special, somewhere, and there's a family Halloween party being prepared.  Most of the jokes are like hey "Aren't the Addams Family odd, they must be speaking in code" and  Gomez's brother keeps falling for his sister-in-law because funny. The pacing is woof. (and rough) They also make a Mikey likes it reference, which I'm sure the writers were just laughing about.  The crooks are planning to enter the Addams' house to steal money somehow.  Back the pacing we are 20 minutes in, so far only getting to not just setting up stuff.  One of the crooks sends Mikey to investigate the house. We do get the classic reaction from the series of when someone being surprised by Lurch and disturbed by the house.

Forget phones, suitcases are the future/ Copyright MGM

Mikey meets Morticia, and she has Grandmama show him around the house.  (The original Grandmama actress didn't appear in this production and passed away a few months after this aired; they had Jane Rose play the part.) Wednesday is home (Uh Wednesday Sr.) from musical academy.  (I'm not asking questions though) Yes the special is keeping to the series main thing where a stranger/outsider is perplexed by the weirdness of the family. It's just feels like this one is dragging it out.

The other crooks are confused as to why Mikey is responding to their briefcase calls. Later Mikey meets Kitty Cat,  and he goes mad and runs out of the house. Meanwhile, Pugsley Sr. is home, he's in medical school to be a witch doctor.
The special isn't that bad, guy/ Copyright MGM

Mikey comes back the crooks, babbling, and I think he quit being a crook.  (Good for him)  Anyway, they have two buff men , a fake Gomez, and a fake Morticia as part of their plans to get the money from the safe. Which seems like a lot of work. We also get a joke about the kids not being doing their weird stuff. (Generations)  Gomez returns home, earlier than planned, meaning the crooks' plan hasn't worked. I'm glad we got Gomez's jealous feelings over in like 1 minute.

The main crook, "Bones" Lafferty. dresses up as  John Quincy Addams (get it?)  So the plan is crooks dress up like they are family members while the fake Morticia and Gomez are supposed to present themselves as the real people. Which I'm glad works.

Gomez's brother and Morticia's  sister grab the fake  Morticia and Gomez , because they are in love with them, not the fake ones, but yeah. The real ones are tied by the strongmen. Then Gomez uses his piccolo send Morse code, Wednesday get the message and tells Cousin Itt to go check it out. Gomez is free..  but the guys grab him again.  This is an odd special when things aren't being slow.  Then again they repeat Gomez getting captured like 2 more times so it's tedious.

The jealousy bit comes back when Gomez sees the Pancho with his wife , then they really like the Gomez likes French gag.  This special is just tedious.   Lurch scares off scaring the buff men because he thinks they want the girl he likes, who is one of the crooks dressed like a woman, and the

Then Bones is brought to the rack and ends up confessing he's a crook. Then he runs out, steps on Kitty Cat's tail....  Anyway the police show up for the noise, and the crooks get arrested, also Lurch is sad.

Apparently, Cousin Shy has shown up and the special wants the Pancho plot to die where Gomez overhears the man talking good about him, yay.  There's a Halloween carol, finally. They have Halloween Christmas and there we go.
Halloween needs Christmas traditions/ Copyright MGM

Like, I said there's not much in this special, it's very stretched, padded and doesn't feel like it's going anywhere.  The sitcom was shorter, but also had tight writing, but also knew it was goofy a little. Here it tries to capture that, but it does get a little weak and the plot feels like it's just meandering. It's trying to be fun and playing with it's source but it's just feels lacking. The acting is alright, but the special just feels like it's there. I do think a younger child might enjoy the goofiness of it.  Kind of a shame, because I do like the 64 series, but yeah. It kind of works as background thing to have during Halloween that's just there but not really there to be fully watched, or for younger kids to enjoy,  I guess.   I feel kind of bad if I'm mean to it,  it's not terrible it's just long.

That's it for now, tune in next time, when we visit the Addams family and not pet the lion.

Halloween: Spooky Bats and Scaredy Cats

Halloween

In the process of looking for Halloween media to write about,  I had this special written down in a list and never got back to that...list. Anyway this one is interesting, I don't know much about it, except that apparently it's a TV special, but not sure where it aired and aired in like 2009, at least IMBD says that so. but who cares?  This gives us time to focus on  the special itself.

First off, it's stop motion and has a nice charm to how it looks.  This special looks good, it's fall, Halloween night the coloring is warm but feels like night, it feels like Halloween oozing through its look.  We have two main children characters named, Makean (pronounced as Mak-key-an) and his sister, named Katie. They are trick or treating on this night. Nothing too much makes them stand out as characters, but  I don't think that's the purpose.  Makean is worried about 'spooks' because he's young and thinks spooks exist. (They do)  The first person, we see, they visit gives them a not so good treat.
The Penguin and Catwoman ... what?

There's also the Candleman.  Whom they seem to know.  Why? Quick search....  This is part of a series of specials  where this one is number 2, and a Christmas special called "The Christmas Light" is the first one and so yeah cool.  That's why they aren't like "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" for the special which could limit the special for some, but again maybe we don't need to know too much about him for this special.  His design is cool, if not dangerous with all those candles.  He's apparently handing out pickles to trick or treaters.  He also has floating swimming fish, because sure.
That hat is a fire hazard

Really, this shouldn't be the question too much special, we'd be here a long time. Candleman asks if they'd like to help  him complete a task to delver some invitations.  He gives the kids a map and puts them on a fancy carriage, and he's like I'm off, bye. ( Same)    The first place is Spooky Hallow. (Which really sounds a like tourist trap, I'm going)   Anyway Makean's fears are part of the plot and he is nervous about everything.

Stop one, a place that looks like they are entering an ancient Egyptian tomb and oh look a mummy.  Even Katie screams as she gives him is invitation, but he seems like a nice mummy. (Katie thinks it was a costume, after she apparently thought it out)   Next, the swamp, a good place to meet a swamp monster.  Do love the design because it looks both kind of unsettling, but not menacing.
That's how he gets his victims, they think he doesn't look menacing  then he eats your head goes out at night and eats cars

They meet the wolfman, the Grim Reaper, scare crow, (there's a song that playing during the montage that sounds like someone really liked "The Nightmare Before Christmas and wanted something like that for a song)  Next they meet a witch, that or a woman making soup.   Also the way she talks she really should understand that it sounds like she wants to eat them. (I'd like to have you for dinner)

She does give them two brooms, to fly to Frank's place (is that the bar on 53th and Franklin?) . Frank is Frankenstein's monster just in case you needed that. They seem to be enjoying the broom flying instead of going ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Katie also maybe realizes that this all might be real stuff.  Frank meets them (oh good he's trademark safe)  Didn't need him picking up a girl though, that brings up flashbacks.  (of what ? oooh)
I've learned to ask people if they want to swim since the incident

Frank seemed nice, not much of a talker.  The two kids run from ole Frank, because now Katie realizes the monsters are real. The moral of the story is Makean was right, always listen to him. (what?)  They see the monsters we just saw following them and  in a slow speed chase. (Chopper 32 is tired, we're going home)  They decide to run to old castle, the monsters catch up to them and ring the doorbell.  Candleman answers the door and the monsters are his friends. (oooh)

Death takes the night off...

It's a monster mash. It's kind of fun to see these monsters not be scary and just having some fun at a party.   The special ends with a nice shot of the house.

I do find it funny that Katie doesn't think spooks were real but accepts a flying fish and a guy wearing candles on his head as like sure, normal, and then she's like no these are guys in costumes, and still seems a skeptic until the broom ride.  But I'm not here to tear apart a this, (I am though ,*rips paper)

The animation is charming, it's a simple straight forward story with showing Makean to have some courage.  I'm not sure if there is a moral besides courage through fear can get you far or that monsters aren't as bad as they seem? I don't know.  It's not a high thinking special, but it's there to relax with or show younger children, it's fine.

That's it for now, tune in next time when we find a monster and think he's not so bad and get eaten!

Halloween: The Monster's Ring

Halloween

We dip back into the "CBS Storybreak" specials, which for those that don't know was like CBS' version of ABC Weekend Special, these were specials that were based off books, because why read books when you can watch them?  Anyway, today's post for our Halloween looks is  based off a book called The Monster's Ring written by Bruce Colville.

The Monster's Ring the special first aired on October 10, 1987.

mmmm cupcake

Our main character is a boy named Russel who is being bullied by a boy named Eddie, his friend, I guess, Mindy says he needs to stand up for himself, but he says he can't. Anyway, when he runs from Eddie he ends up at a random shop where he's convinced to buy a ring for 25 cents. It comes with a chant (as all good rings should)  The chant says there's friend in the ring there to help, he says the chant to the wrong and he says it would be great to turn into a monster to scare Eddie. He thinks it's fake but ends up turning into a monster. (Always be careful what you say around magic rings)

Next time, Gadget, next time

He then jumps out of his window as one does to do off screen stuff. (glad he doesn't need his glasses a monster, those are expensive) The special comes back and he thinks he had a dream until he finds out he's still a monster. (Some people are that way in the morning) Well now he's nervous that his father will find out and he pretends to be sick, of course father needs to check him out.

Monsters aren't real, quoth the monster

He then reads the paper ,that he read before to see how to turn back to normal. (convenient)  It works and he can go to to school now, and his dad can drive him.  Mindy talks about how people heard about a maniac running around causing a mess around town. (Wow the same night as Russel running out and being a monster, oh wait.)

At school Eddie decides to spend his time looking for Russel because reasons. Russel turns back into a monster and scares Eddie. Eddie runs like a coward. At lunch, Mindy is talking about the maniac  and Eddie shows  up again (because he's annoying) and decides to take Russel's glasses and stick them in his food. (At least he's not breaking them?) Then he pours milk on it because that makes sense. Then Russel dumps the food on Eddie's head.  (mm Eddie and Spaghetti)

Ah silly 80's and their silly hair styles

Eddie goes to chase Russel and then finally gets to turn into a monster to scare Eddie. He gets in trouble and so does  Russel because of dumping the food on Eddie.  Later, the father's reaction to Russel mentioning Eddie is like, make friends with him. Which is an interesting reaction. Eddie brought two guys to help him take down Russel because sure. (Weak)

They are dressed scarily

Eddie and the other guys grab him and Eddie thinks he has a bodyguard. The other guys think Eddie is weak since the 'bodyguard' doesn't show up. They leave, Eddie takes his bike and now Russel has a plan.

You might wondering why am I doing this as a Halloween post? Yeah it has a monster in it , but it's not  really Halloween set? Well that's where you are WRONG.  (aggressive) There's a Halloween thing see. The school let the kids dress up in costumes, nice.   Anyway, Russel has a plan.  Also Russel's dad continues to really just be there.  The other two guys from before think Eddie crossed him and want to do something to him. Now, Russel has become mon-Russel again and thankfully people think it's a costume, good.  Then he somehow grows a tail and horns and stuff. (Something going on)
Plastic Surgery, of course.

He goes to Eddie and takes his bike back and flies away.  He can fly now. Eddie tries to tell the teacher and few others that Russel took HIS bike and flew away. Then he's forced to admit that it was Russel's bike.

Anyway, Russel flies back down and thinks it's time to get back to normal.  Later, he sees Eddie being bullied by the other guys he called earlier.  Russel decides to help Eddie, but the ring is gone, he decides to stand up for Eddie himself and it works. Russel realizes he needed the ring and doesn't need it now.  Eddie decides to be friendly and yeah that's it.
That's how Bazooka Joe found a friend

This is a very simple story and that's fine.  Russel is being bullied and it becomes a wish empowerment story where he ends up being a monster to stop his monster. I like that he doesn't seem to go too far and get power mad.   The characters are flat, but we get simple goals and story and it works . It's barely Halloween and that's only there to have Russel be able to use his monster form at school and nobody going and trying to pitchfork him or something.  I like how it ended up having Russel help Eddie, it was a nice touch. It's simple, sweet, effective, not really spooky, but kind of fun. That's it though. Pretty good to see, read the book too.

That's it for now , tune in next when grrrrr wowowowwowowow

One Shot Posts: The King of the Hill Spinoff That Didn't : Monsignor Martinez

One Shot Posts

Welcome back to "One Shot Posts" or posts I don't know where they go otherwise, this time, we have a little something different.  So "King of the Hill" was an animated show on Fox that ran 13 seasons, and most people who went this post already knew that probably.  There has been some talk about bringing it back, which I have thoughts on, but not really going to bring up. The series was a fun well written animated show without falling into the traps of other shows in the same space around the same time.  Today's post has to do with something from KOTH.  For the viewers of the show they would be aware of Monsignor Martinez, from the series the Hills sometime watch, that priest seems to be caught up in shooting people and stuff and less on doing boring stuff. There's even an episode based around him.

There was more.  Apparently, there was enough popularity or someone really liked the idea that there was interest in making a show based around this character. That's what we're talking about today.  There was a pilot made, that seemingly didn't have light of day and was lost media ,until it's not lost media. (You could have written about it without the pilot somehow?)

For King of the Hill knowers (that's a word) it was written by Jim Dauterive, Mike Judge, and Greg Daniels from King of the Hill, so that's how you know.   According to a King of the Hill fan site, Fox wanted pilot in 2001, but decided not pick up as a series (why not?)  The thought is that FOX didn't want a show where a priest shoots people.  (Oh now FOX has standards)  Which is why live in this time instead.

The pilot and I guess if there had been a series was in live-action, which isn't a bad thing. Monsingor Martinez was played by  Ivo Cutzarida.  Also it's in English, so that ruins the fun a little, you you know, oh well.

Martinez is on plane and annoyed by Kevin Nealon , which is the most random thing ever, the woman next to him asks him why he's going to San Diego and the monsignor says he's going to kill a guy. (which makes sense)  He then tells a story and it does play to the randomness of the stuff you'd see on the episode clips in King of the Hill, it's really just randomly great.  If you like shootouts  in a church this would be your series.

He's in SanDeigo, and I'm not explain everything, moistly because it's fun to watch, and you should be checking it out.  It's pretty much everything you'd expect in a  series based on the telenovela on King of the Hill.  Ironically, it's very cartoon like.  David Herman plays a good straight man, named John Smith, (great name) to the Cutzarida's character;  he thinks everything going on is kind of insane.  Which makes him letting loose at the end where they are setting up for a series even more fun.
I bring you no Cadillac

It all caps off to a shoot out at the climax because that's what this needed, I'd expect nothing else.  It's also a fun start  to what looks like what would have been a fun series, setting up the cast and an on-going story.  As a pilot, it's great hook and now it's a shame that it never became a series, even a one season series, It's just wrong that we don't get more.  I'd rather they take a stab at this again, than trying to bring back King of the Hill.
Cool Car, Cool guy,  the partner, a lady, a kid , the show has a whole cast we need let's go!

The only reason for to not check out this pilot is the disappointment that there's more to watch, but otherwise it's fun trip. Everything about it feels like the show Hank and Peggy would be watching, and from the segments we see in the main series. It really was that fun. It's a comedy, but grippingly interesting and the  premise is weird but well done.  It's cheesy, but the kind of cheesy, but the writing was great, the acting was well done and playing what exactly they needed to do and really want more do you want?

That's it for now, tune in next time, when we answer the door and oh no....
