Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #28: The Semprini Triplets

Season 3, Episode 7

           

  And finally, our marathon (if you've been following through original postings) is over! We've looked at over 28 shorts already (because technically). These weren't any ranked order, just kind of going through the seasons then looping back , shorter: last but not least is The Semprini Triplets

   The Semprini Triplets was created by Pat Ventura, who  made a few shorts for "Oh Yeah" but we are focusing on the this one as it's the final new short in the series. Number 56.   The first thing you'll notice is that is is presented as a modern (of the time) version of Terry Toons, This  one is very harkening back to the old times.  There's faces on the sun and random objects.  Lots of bounce in the movements of characters and items, also there's comic strip like words and actions popping up. 

  Anyway we have three triples who are all color coded for your convenience.  There's  Malinda, the red one, Melvin, the aqua one, and Malcom in pink.   Their mom wakes  them in the car, she rewards them $5 each for mowing the lawn and they go the the amusement park.  Also, I love the voices, having a kid with a deep man voice kind of works for this. There's our guard who decides to change the price of the amusement park entry to $250 because he wants a trip to New Zealand (inflation) 

     The kids go on and he tries to stop them because he wants his full $75. So they start to mess whit him as he chases them.  You get a lot of old fashion slap stick and quick paced comedy as well.  There's acknowledgement that they're cartoon characters and of the creator that's pretty fun.  The kids end up winning  a trip New Zealand.  The guard faints, and it ends with a laugh track.  

       This is one is fun, very retro in tone and it's just there brining the fun. I enjoyed this one alot. Might have been a fun series, but I think nobody wanted a cartoon harking back to the 30's and 40's in the 1990's and early 2000's sadly, and  I guess it wasn't meant to be.  That or if it was slightly earlier, it would have been in the same time as "Animaniacs"  which kind of harkens back to classic Warner Brothers. (Though I'm sure someone would have called this a knock off if that had happened ) 

 

    Do give this one a watch, it's fun.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #27: Kitty the Hapless Cat

    #27 Kitty, the Hapless Cat 

Season 1, episode 9a

    Kitty The Hapless Cat  was created by Zac Moncrief.  Tom Kenny voices Kitty  who decides to tell us life story and difficulties. Like he was adopted by an old lady  who isn't all  there and Kitty has to make sure she doesn't harm herself.  After eating her polish and dish soap sandwich he's apparently put up for adoption again. This time a family with a baby, and the baby swallows a phone and he tries to get do CPR and the parents think he's stealing the baby's breath. A weird man adopts Kitty , who apparently hasn't let his old cat go.  Now, Kitty comes back to his current spot and he's been adopted by scientists who are studying him. 

   

       It's a mixture of different things with a cat finding the weirdest owners and having to be sent back. It's simple, but humorous.  There's some fun here, Tom Kenny makes Kitty interesting.  This is one that works better as a short and not as a series.  I can't imagine watching like even 7 episodes of Kitty getting stuck in more weird homes, it would grow tiring pretty quickly. For a short , it's not bad.  

     It's another, there's not much for me to add here, type post though. Do watch it though.

Oh Yeah! Cartoon: #26 Zoo Mates

Season 1, Episode 12b 

     Zoo Mates makes us  wonder a parallel world where there's  Nickelodeon running a series created by Seth MacFarlane and directed by Butch Hartman.    This one has a laugh track , that's right , it was filmed in front of a live-studio audience, either that or it's a laugh track.  Helen, who looks like Vicky from "Fairly Odd Parents" but with blonde hair  and voiced by Jennifer Love Hewitt who wants all the animals released from the zoo.

        The zoo director lets  Paul, an alligator,  Warren an ostrich, and Mark a polar get out of the zoo and the  to live normal lives and he'll consider shutting it down.  So yes they get their own apartment and Helen leaves them to see see if they can do it. (That's a smart idea)  The cartoon is very dialogue and slap stick heavy.  

          This of course, doesn't go well., as over night they flood the apartment then start a fire. The sprinkler comes on and they don't know how to turn it off and the flood makes a mess of the apartment and it ends up getting destroyed. 

        Helen says this is going to be harder then she thought and it ends. 

     Uh, I think this supposed to be a parody of sitcoms, hence the laugh, which is overused. There's not much interesting going on in this cartoon, just a bunch of animals and the one joke that ha animals that can talk and stuff, but they can't do human stuff that's funny somehow.    It does try to  be cutting but tame at the same time. 

   Yeah, I'm not sure it would be an interesting series unless MacFarlane changed almost every part of it to something a little more interesting.  By the time this aired though, Family Guy was on the way. and yeah. It's totally bad , it's more meh than anything.  MacFarlane and Hartman did find other better things to do, though imagine a world where they did get a series together on Nickelodeon, a lot of TV would be different, holy wow!

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #25 : Hubbykins vs Sweetiepie

 #25 Hubbykins vs. Sweetiepie

Season 1, episode 9c

            Back to Rob Renzetti , our cartoon is called Hubbykins Vs. Sweetiepie .   This one is presented dialogue free meaning the cartoon has to henge on its imagination. You do get alot of story Hubbykins is kind of a slob and Sweetie pie is  a nurse  and she also cleans up the house making her tired. 

   Essentially, that's the cartoon, she wants him to be less of slob and clean up after himself and he wants to go out and bowl.   This is like Tom and Jerry but with a husband and wife.  (That's not a sentence I expected to write)  Maybe Road runner stuff too.  This whole thing is like a send back to classic cartoons with slapstick, violence and just two contrasting characters going after each other. 

          Though unlike Tom and Jerry, Hubbykins does feel bad that there was  mess after she starts crying and he cleans up the house, well his own way.   Pretty sweet.

            There's not much to write about this in terms of the plot, but it s a fun to watch , it really has a fun energy to it .  It does feel like a love letter to old cartoons though.  This is one I don't think could have been a series, not sure if there a large audience of people who'd want to watch husband vs. wife antics in cartoon form ...on Nickelodeon.   Renzetti did get a show on Nick, I'm sure he's happier with the Robot show being the one that was picked. 

 

   Give this one a watch though, I really mean that, it's fun! 

 Tune in next time when I pitch a cartoon about a married couple  who fight each other with various weapons  to show their affection.  

      

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #24 :Zoey's Zoo

Season 2, Episode 12b

    Zoey Zoo was created by Amy Ellyn Anderson and David Burd.    I love the theme song it's fun in its own way. Also Zoey reminds me of a mixture of Marcie from Peanuts  and Lisa Loud from The Loud House.  Zoey is a girl who a has lot of animals, and apparently her mother is like Charlotte Pickles for the not paying attention to her daughter awards. Anyway, she wants an ocelot for her "zoo"  and she keeps telling her mother that she wants to get one but the woman again isn't paying attention.

        I wish we lived in  a world where everything had their own store to easily find it.  Zoey calls Ocelot Hut and gets to order one. She wonders if it's going to be a girl one or a boy one so she calls again and doesn't clarify that she already ordered one so  I mean, the full title has the words lots of ocelots guess what happens? 

        She realizes she needs to order ocelot food, so she calls again a few times when she think up something and calls them 62 times. (uhhh) (Don't order an ocelot at home folks)  And they won't stop coming and won't stop coming.  Zoey's reaction really makes this funnier because she's  not worried about them messing up the house and bothering her sleeping father, she casually looking for the ocelot food  and wonder how she's going to feed them all. She also only named 2 of them. 

     Zoey restores order in the calmest way possible and the ocelots end up looking like house decoration and she requests to her mother , if she can have a baby brother.  And more theme song.

   

  It kind of reminds me of Peanuts mixed (mmm Peanuts mixed) with a little pre school shows where the character seems to just talk matter of factly. Zoey is the main character and she essentially has to  hold the whole thing going.  She's a charming character though. I counted , Zoey says Ocelot 29 times, 30 if you her using the genus name, and ocelot is mentioned 38 times or 39 altogether. 

   There's a fun charm to this, I think I would have had fun with it as a series, not sure how far this could  go, but it would be fun to see what animals she collects next.   I do give this a recommendation go watch it and let the theme capture you as well.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons #23 Enchanted Adventures

       #23 Enchanted Adventures 

Season 1, Episode 7c 

          Back to John Eng & Bill Burnett this time together, the team up you know you wanted.  This one is interesting the biggest thing to notice is the animation, it kind of harkens back to like late 80's early 90's action cartoons with a budget.  This one looks like they spent more money than a few others. 

      This cartoon takes place in a fantasy kingdom that has been infected with a plague (uhhh) a woman  Brangwen  comes in and says her father had found away to cure it, the king has to send his inexperienced teenage son, Galen with her to get the final ingredient from a dragon.  

          He has a magic transforming sword. Here comes a dragon and Galen has a hard time fighting it; the dragon talks to him and apparently speaks like Jeff Goldblum so that's something . (Good work Jess Harnell) the dragon is named Kaltor.  Kaltor asks why does Galen want to kill him and Galen explains the plague and the dragon says there's no plague (pulls collar) and that the people have been poisoned.  Also Brangwen has disappeared. (she must be evil then?) 

    Her father's name is Zim (oh my) and is actually an evil troll. Katlor says it must have been an distraction to steal the Ebro Crystal, which is stolen now.  The evil trolls real name is Brok and yes he has the crystal  to evil things with.   

   When a  Galen vs Bork battle !    He's able to get the crystal back after using the boomerang trick  from before. 

  

   This one feels way different to the other ones that we've looked it. It just kind of stands out in both design and storytelling.  If anything, I can tell that this cartoon probably wasn't picked up, because it doesn't seem to fit what Nickelodeon was airing at the time at all. It seems like it would have been a fun story, it could have worked either as story driven or episodic with character development. Kind of  shame that it didn't.  I like how it also does its own little things like, the dragon isn't evil and can talk , and just little things like that to make it work.  

     

    The idea is pretty interesting, the story of the short is  epic (the original meaning ) and packs a lot in the 7 minutes, give it a view

Oh Yeah! Cartoons : #22 Kameleon Kid

      #22 Kameleon Kid

    Season 3, episode 6c 

        Kameleon Kid was created by  Jaime Diaz and Russ Mooney.  Our main character is Cameron  who wakes up one night after hearing noises from a barn that apparently is a laboratory run by his parents. He ends up zapped by a machine and he's turned into a mouse. (squeak) There's a cat and mouse chase, with dogs changing.  Cameron figures out that he can change into different things by wishing for it, so he turns into a dog... a big dog. (Woof) 

         The next day, he decides to mess with his bully, Otto, then goes to see Suzy , whom I think both boys like. Eventually he gets Otto locked up on the roof of an apartment building and laughed at on TV.  His parents did find out he was in the lab, but not the animal part and mentions the title of the short.

       This one goes in the category of the most pilot-ish pilot  of the cartoons featured. They have the hook of a kid turning into different animals for plots of future episodes; the ending line of the short is he'll have to tell his parents some time about the whole thing, but he's currently the Kameleon  Kid. (roll credits)  

    

   The concept is another interesting one, though I can see Nickelodeon not wanting two shows where the main character says "I wish" as a concept, and picked the one with the pink-hatted boy over this one. It is a little too basic, if it was a series, I'd hope there'd be more than just Cameron finding new ways to deter this annoying bully. There are some inconsistencies in the short, but it's a pilot so I give it some benefit of the doubt, but they are noticeable. 

 

        The cartoon is aright, but nothing too much that makes it that fully entertaining on it's own even with its interesting concept.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons! #21: Pete Patrick, P.I.: What About Lunch?

#21 Pete Patrick, P.I.: What About Lunch?

Season 1, Episode 4c (yes we're back to season 1) 

     Pete Patrick, P.I.: What About Lunch?    was created by Vincent Waller ,but unlike the last time we mentioned him, this one was him in a solo creation role not  a co-creator.  The basic idea here a kid private detective,who gets picked up by a cat sidekick, named Persian Puss. They on to  a case about a dog napping.  The voice of Bobby Hill, Pamela Aldon (as Pam Segal) voices Pete , while  Persian is voiced by Billy West.

         A lead takes them to a spooky mansion to investigate. Meanwhile, there's Dr. Don't who is doing some evil things and they apparently know each other.  The henchman has an interesting design, so what's his plan?  He took a dog to lure Pete there for his real plan of switching bodies with Pete so he can get dinner from his mom. Which is a very creative plan. 

     The lunch from earlier was storing his cousin named Lunch who is  a big man who beats up the bad Doctor. (Glad that worked) Also like how they get of the cage that Don't  had them in.  

  This  was pretty fun to watch, a kid detective thing isn't a new concept (even in 1998) but it's fun and does a little harkening to old cartoons. The villain's plan was pretty creative.  

  I think this could have made a fun series, the concept has open possibilities and there's a charm to it. Give this one a watch.

Season 3, Episode 4b

    Elise ,or,  Elise: Mere Mortal is another entry from Guy Vasilovich. Our main character is Elise Crump, who's voiced by Cree Summer. This time our MC looks different from his past too, but you can tell Vasilovich was going for  certain vibe for his cartoons.   In this cartoon, Elise has to go the orthodontist, to have her braces tightened. 

    

       The orthodontist is very eccentric,  and really there's an atmosphere to this cartoon that just embraces a whole what am I watching? thing.  There's  a spot where teeth are dancing, for example, Meanwhile in Siberia some scientists shoot a beam that some how make it and zap Elise's braces. (Reminds me of "Braceface") 

      There's a spot where teeth sing a rock song for some reason  and Elise is none the wiser of whatever just happened.(same)  Though she seems to keep zapping  stuff without noticing it, and she's getting radio signals through her braces.  It is kind of weird she doesn't notice the electricity doing stuff. 

  

           The funny thing watching this, is it felt short, like shorter than the 7 minutes, not much happens, it's a strange girl going to the orthodontist then gets zapped , then goes home. She doesn't seem to notice it and nothing goes from that plot. Just weird doctor and stuff just happens and gives up.  If I was comparing it to Vasilovich's other two I've covered  I would say this is the weakest one.  

     If this was like a start of a new series and setting up the idea of everywhere Elise goes something strange happens like she gets zapped, or  the eye doctor thing they mention at the end, she goes there and ends being able to see people naked or something, or have strange stuff happen and she never notices it, that could work. But as is, it wasn't that much to write about, kind of a shame but it happens.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #19: Skippy Spankerton

  #19 Skippy Spankerton

Season 3, Episode 3b 

    Skippy Spankerton Presents: Hot Tamale Monster Movie Madness!  was created by Eric Bryan and Michelle Bryan. So this is a cartoon about a movie being made by a kid, a 9-year-old girl named Skippy.  Who sounds like Carl Foutley beause well it is Jeannie Elias , who would voice that character.  Kevin Michael Richardson is back too voicing trademark safe not Godzilla, Zolla.  

      Skippy is trying to make a film for the film festival with two monsters  and trying to make a movie before bedtime.  Also the monsters aren't real it was Skippy working with toys, I kind of think that's creative but also kind of sad they revealed it too early, would have been a nice way to end it. 

    Skippy's mom makes her eat dinner, cutting into her time. It's tamale night too (cool).  The parents are kind of  weird, but not bland so that's kind of fun. The super hot tamales gives her an idea to use  for fire breathing monster action. And just to make things mean for Skippy, the father remembers Daylight Saving Time and moves the clock up an hour ,meaning she lost an hour. (Daylight Saving Time is evil  so I give it points for showing that)   

      The wagon is a "Citizen Cane" reference action.  The monsters don't want to eat the tamales because of reasons.  Skippy has to contend with this while trying to get things done.  I can feel the urgency.  Finally she gets her fire breathing and the movie done before the parents check on her and mission accomplished.  We get to see her movie too , which again is just her doing normal things with her toys. 

         I love the concept of this one, even though the idea of making a movie as an idea for a story is kind of basic, the idea of it being Skippy's imagination that the toys are really moving gives it a charm of child imagination. The parents are weird and I feel embarrassed, but pretty funny. The cartoon really is charming and a joy to watch.  Again, I kind of wish they held off the reveal until the end , but the early reveal doesn't hurt it and kind of makes it funnier that she's imagination having difficult actors and we already know they're toys. 

     It works as a one and done story, but if  it was a show I could see Skippy having more adventures with imagination.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #18: The Tantrum

#18 The Tantrum 

Season 3, episode 1b

  We head into the final season of the series, that's season 3.   Also runs from 1999-2002, meaning the channel had probably held some stuff over through the time.  "Fairly Odd Parents" became a series in 2001,  and "Chalk Zone" in 2002.  Season 3 is the shortest, and many of the shorts featured were new episodes of the I guess "mini series" they were doing.  Interestingly enough, there was no Chalk Zone shorts.  

        The Tantrum was created by John Fountain,  who also wrote, directed, character designed, and did the voice for the main character.  (source )

  

      The idea is that it's a comedic superhero cartoon with a hero that is triggered by frustrations like "The Hulk"   our main  character is  boy named Travis who sees a toy on TV through an ad and asks his parents for the toy, and the parents say he has enough and being patient is good. 

    Travis  tries to not get angry but he does end up turning into his superhero powers, as the Tantrum to get his frustrations out.  I like that creative idea, that's kind of cool to see a kid hero who does kid stuff like  being frustrated and channels into constructive rage. 

      

  In this case he fights a fire and saves a toy store, which most of the toys are alright, but the one he wanted, because that's a law of cartoons.  He goes to see the president who nervous about aliens coming and I see someone liked "Independence Day"   An alien named commander Twang condemns the president because of space junk and wants it cleaned up. (Which I kind of like the idea of aliens being mad that there's space junk and not just wanting to invade the Earth) 

      

     Tantrum uses his tantrum powers, and the alien has a sleep ray (I wish that was real, that could help alot of people)  and puts the boy to sleep. Then tantrum wakes up, and he thinks everything was a dream and realizes no, this was the dream.  Then he really wakes up. 

    He uses his scream powers and makes the aliens give him anything he wants and then they leave, I guess he asked for the toy, it cuts to his house, his parents decide to surprise him with the toy for being good. The twist is the alien gave him a real robot so alright then.

       This one is creative, but there are some weaknesses. I do wonder if the executives would have been against the idea of a series based on a superhero based on tantrums just because tantrums. Even if the boy only does it as super powers versus the other way. The story is alright,  could have been fine tuned and it's hard to be too mean to it, since it seems it was very one guy working on it focused. 

     

     I do think a comedic kid saves the world series would work, there is some creativity, some things would have to be changed. Again, it was short/pilot so there could have been some fine tuning, but anyway.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #17: Terry and Chris

Season 2, Episode 13b

 

    We are in the season finale of season 2, looking at the second  segment of the episode, Terry and Chris. There's an interesting backstory to this one's creator.  John Reynolds  created this one at the age of 11.  Reynolds had not just worked on his own cartoons, but had a complete storyboard,  and character designs.  Butch Hartman supervised, which also explains the why it looks the way it does and he directed it too.  Pretty cool.  (source)   

     If it's not good, we can't be mean to an 11-year-old even if he's not eleven anymore... hmmm. 

   

       It takes place in a fictional town called Valley View, USA (in America),  our main character is a boy named Chris, talking about how normal things are and he is until THEY AREN'T.  Chris goes to a pet store to spend his birthday money for  pet, there's a cockatiel that has the ability to talk. Either the bird changes heads when it speaks in someone else's voice or that's a visual effect so hmm alright then.  

    

     He brings the bird to school for share day, (not to be confused with Cher day, where everyone dresses like Cher). There are two friends he has they all seem to be doing this "cool" act by wearing little glasses or something. (Little glasses are cool)  Oh he named the bird the Terry.  Since Chris does something stupid like telling the bird what they call the teacher behind her back, the law says the bird will repeat it and cause trouble. (Thy rule of writing cartoons be done) 

        Chris doesn't get that much trouble the principal seems to be very understanding and just tells Chris to leave his pets at home next time. (I thought it was Sting day) Chris sees  a girl with an Australian accent (voiced by Kath Soucie) and Chris likes her, you can tell by the music and hearts.  Angela is a new student and he gets to escort her to class.  Angela meets  the two friends  and kisses Chris on the cheek in front of them. 

        Then it gets awkward when Chris says something mean to impress his friends. Then a bully shows up, (I'd mean to people too if I was 4 times their size , otherwise they'd be mean to me)  Angela decides to go with him because Chris hurt her feelings.  Later, Chris gets mad that he didn't do the right then and Terry flies away to help. Jerry talks like Angela and makes Max , the bully, go away.  Chris meets with Angela and apologizes  and things are fine. 

        Simple story, but I liked it, there's a charm to it. (Yeah this is not my don't be mean to the post thing kicking in, it genuine)  The characters are kind static, but again it's a short or maybe a pilot ,so I understand that would be something, that and being written by an 11-year-old. 

     That does bring up the question of the series thing since, I think it would be hard for 11-year-old to run a series and do normal eleven-year-old things, this was done during some school off time. Though it could have maybe been done in the future , if he was still interested. Taking away logic for a moment,  it would be have been the most authentic to the kids series if it was written by a kid.  I could see Terry being used for different plots where things go silly or something.   

        There's some fun to be had here, to watch, it's not A+ , but it's charming in it's own way.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons #16 : Lollygaggin

    Season 2, Episode 8b

             Back to Guy Vasilovich and another short he made. If you looked at Earth to Obie you'll notice that the main character has similar look to him.  Lollygaggin  is about a young girl named Lollygaggin, she's apparently not a well liked person becuase of her many faults. Including the fact the was  a big lair sometimes. 

          In her room she finds a creature that apparently is related to her fibs. He starts eating stuff in her room, including almost her cat. (we almost had a dead cat thing going on here) The monster is played by Kevin Michael Richard, who really brings a lot to the character he makes it feel intimidating and menacing ,yet charming.  The monster has a creative design about him as well. 

        

                   He turns his idea to eating Lolly  and she starts to run away from him. She finds a room of other smaller fibs and they scurry out, the main focus is big thing.  After along amount of running, she runs back home and does the only thing she could do- tell the truth , well that stops the creature as she shrinks down. 

     The plot is a really classic concept of someone's lies turning into a monster and getting worse as they lie more and making the truth a resolution. This a good telling of that idea. The animation style is very nice, I'm getting some Courage the Cowardly Dog  vibes from it.   The parents are kind of funny parodies of 50's ad parents. Marsia Clark and Carlos Alaraqui bring a lot to these characters you see a couple times.  Lolly is an interesting character, too I think a series of this would have been interesting with a main character who is not the squeaky clean protag.  

    

          I did like this one more than Obie , if I'm forced to choose between the two. I think a series would have worked from this one, there's some potential.  If you had to watch this one or Obie, pick this one more (but do watch both) .

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #15: The Kid from S.C.H.O.O.L

                                             Season 2, Episode 5b  

    Bob Boyle is back for the other short he created, this one is a co-creation with Bill Rilling. Rilling as also worked on "King of the Hill" as a story board artist,"Family Guy", "Tutenstein" and more stuff.   

       The Kid from S.C.H.O.O.L  sounds like someone was parodying    The Man from U.N.C.L.E .

    It doesn't say Butch Hartman but the designs feel like a Butch Hartman thing.  He may have had something to do with.  Our main character is a boy named Jake Slade (voiced by Jason Marsden) from  he's from Secret Command Headquarters Of Official Law-enforcement. It starts with him stopping an evil genius from hypnotizing a girl to make her take him, Simon Cerebellum (get it?) to the dance.   Stephanie likes that she was saved and asks Jake to the dance, but  she says no to Simon unless he was the last boy in school and Simon decides to get rid of all boys in the school. 

          The fun of this whole thing is that you are getting all the cheesy spy stuff  , there's even bad puns with an added comic timing.  I like how the school is called  Benedict Arnold High School , though I am actually confused they look more like maybe early middle school at the oldest. There's a lot of fun gadgets ,traps it's a fun romp.

   

   If it was a series , It would probably need a rotating  cast of  villains to make it work , there some things if it stayed the way it was here that would stretched a little thin.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #14: Mina and The count

#14 Mina and the Count 

                                           What a Cartoon!   Season 2 episodes 4c, 5c, 7c, 9c, and 13c

        This  is going to sound weird, (what ever that means for this blog)  but our journey takes us away from Nickelodeon and "Oh Yeah! Cartoon" for a moment.  That's because this one has a longer story than some of our others

        Mina and the Count was created by Rob Renzetti , and it started as  a student film and eventually made a premiere on Cartoon Network's  "What A Catoon! Show" that's right it first aired on Ted Turner's cartoon station. 

   So here's how this post is going work, we are going to look at the five "Oh Yeah! Cartoon" shorts,but we are going to start with the "What a Cartoon!" short just to have some fun continuity. 

What a Cartoon! Mina and the Count; Interlude with a Vampire 

              Vlad the Count is doing what he does best going out and looking for fresh blood, for vampire reasons. We first meet Mina, our main character, and then our vampire guy wakes up because it's nighttime and that's when they wake up.  He shows up in Mina's room and uses his vampire hypnotism powers and realizes he made a mistake he was supposed to get her older sister who's 17 and not Mina who's 7.  (Ooops)  He accidently gets her out of the trance and she's attached to him and won't let go. ( a normal reaction to a creature of the night)  

       He tries to do anything to have her let go,  and ends up having to play with her.  Most of the cartoon has Vlad running off and being found  and having bad luck along the way. Her father hears the noise and sees Mina's room is a mess and her out of bed, the vampire hides as a doll (that works) and flees before dawn. Later he beats up Igor for screwing up.

 

  Mina and The Count: My Best Friend

     Oh Yeah Cartoons! Season 2 episode 9c

                 

        We now make our journey back to "Oh Yeah Cartoons!"  There are some changes not just to the animation, but the voice actress for Mina changed from Ashley Johnson to Tara Strong. The interesting thing about the switch over is that there is no re do of the pilot. It's just throwing you into maybe knowing already. 

       Mina is in school  and does a report about her best friend, talking about the vampire. (She  put in  the work though)  anyway a  boy makes fun of her because the whole vampires aren't real. The  boy's name is Nick so, hmmm wait.  

        Vlad seems to accept that he's Mina's friend, interesting, anyway he shows up and she tells him what happened.  He decides to teach her how to uh fright. It's kind of sweet to see him try to show her how  to scare to stop the bully.  Next day, she dresses like a vampire and tries to  make Nick not make fun of her, this doesn't work. 

 

       The next next day, Nick tries to stalk Nina but instead gets a note and gets to meet Vlad. The twist is kind of fun and you should watch it for that, but I'll say the resolution is good for Mina, at least.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons #13: Earth to Obie

           #13 Earth to Obie

Season 2, Episode 4b 

         Earth to Obie was created by Guy Vasilovich who has long list of directing, producing, and writing. Like directing 10 episodes of "Growing up Creeipie"  working on other "Oh Yeah! Cartoons" shorts including creating another couple we'll be getting to in the future. 

         This one is about a boy named Obie and he uses imagination a lot, this cartoon with the imagination sequences of Obie seeing the world in weird amusing ways. Obie is with his mom on one the more boring things to do , riding around the grocery store, when the mom says the shopping cart is his prison and he can't touch anything, he imagines a prison.  

  

     There's aisle 13, the cereal aisle and Obie's words (in his mind) that sound like he's Brain from "Pinky and the Brian" says he has a cereal addiction and has to do a prison escape to get the prize.  Most of the cartoon has him with 3 other prisoners doing an escape plan.  Only breaking the illusion a couple times. The ending is funny, but I don't know why. 

    It's weird fun,  the cartoon is presented with dark colors and gives it it other worldly feel. I like how it takes something small and normal, like a trip to the grocery, and makes a weird and fun adventure with a prison escape.  The voice of Mike from Mike Lou and Og , and Luna from The Loud House  , Nika Futterman  provides the normal Obie voice you won't be hearing much. The dream Obie has the prefect voice for a devious prison escaper.  (Voiced by Danny Mann) 

    The other prisoners are cereal mascots, you know , cereal escape. They have Frosty the Flake, who looks like Quisp but has a Frosted Flakes name,  Sugar Puff Daddy, doing a Puff Daddy reference, a sugar daddy reference , and a Golden Crisp reference in one throw. Koko Bird, based on the bird from Froot Loops,  and Tiger of Sugar O's who is based on Tony the Tiger which is justf funny they didn't have him be the Frosted Flakes guy.  Rabbit , is just that rabbit from Trix,  And  Bee, the same thing but with Honey Nut Cheerios. 

   I'm going to say this one is an acquired taste though, I can see why some wouldn't like, I enjoyed it , though. I could see this being picked as a series, Nickelodeon really missed the boat on making something weird around the same time "Courage the Cowardly Dog"  on Cartoon Network. There's a lot of elements that I think would have worked for a series.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #12: Magic Trixie

                #12 Magic Trixie 

Season 2, Episode 2b 

             Season 2 did have change over all in the series for example, the amount of new shorts kind of drifts to a show with more reoccurring. For example this episode has only this as a new short and with it being flanked by a new "Fairly Odd Parents" short and "Tales from the Goose Lady"  that will be  the trend through this season.   

   

          Magic Trixie was created by  Alex Kirwan, with direction by Rob Renzetti. This short goes with a more retro design again. The thing about 90's cartoons , since this was an era of more original content, and new networks and outlets providing them, the influences of older media would come up as inspirations for many of the time period's ideas. 

                The cartoon also goes for a muted tone where the colors are there but not as bright, giving it a look, only getting brighter when it fits the story.  Our main character doesn't seem to talk, her name is Trixie she's interested in magic. She buys a simple trick from the magic shop. There's a magician, he's flashy and has expensive stuff a contrast to Trixie.   He invites Trixie on the stage and he notices that every time she pulls something from her hat some thing comes out, when he tries it nothing comes out.  

       I get that old "Looney Tunes" vibe with Bugs and Daffy at that moment when the crowd is cheering her and not him. Then  she ends up being an assistant and is able to out do the magician. Oh and she does say words at some point.   

    The magician gets jealous and tries to trap her with some wild animals, where we get a creative sequence of her using magic and getting around his trap.  She has proven herself to have natural talent and  becomes the lead magician while the other one has become her assistant. 

    This one is fun, it's very nostalgic in how it feels like a retro 30's /40's (the 19 ones, for you future readers)  there's a simple fun to it and it's like  a mixture of a silent cartoon and talking one. The short is just plain fun. There's a lot of creativity and a nice little message added in.

   I don't see this one being a good one for a series, the whole concept feels like a complete story told in 7 minutes,  that I'm not sure where a series could go, but that might be limits in thinking about it more than anything else.   Well, check it out!

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #11: Fathead

#10 Fathead

Season 1, Episode 13b 

             Fathead (what did you call me? I'll sue!)  is also from the season 1 finale and also a special 11 minutes.  It was created by Vince Calandra  who worked on "Rugrats" , "Ren and Stimpy Show",  "Rocko's Modern Life" who later wrote for "Two Guys, a Girl and Pizza Place" which is  kind of just fun to acknowledge. 

 

          

          This one takes place in caveman times, and the intro voiceover sounds like Tommy Pickles, but our main character is named Fathead.  Fathead is apparently the smartest caveman (boy)  who invented golf and fire. (not on the same day that'd be too much)  Of the leaders named Lord Amur comes over and places a  bird's nest on his head. His son, named Junior speaks English so we can understand what this means it's time  for a manhood test for Fathead he has to steal an egg from a T-Rex or get banished. (harsh) 

    His sister, Taung (voiced by Sarah Rayne) explains that Junior technically cheated during his test  why not try a different way to do it.  The thing you'll notice in this short is that the parents don't speak with in normal (to us) talk but the kids do speak fluent English. Essentially giving us a very noticeable generation gap and kind of creative. 

      Later Taung and Fathead's friend, Horst, go and find some Neanderthals to trade some jewels for a rock that is painted to look like an egg. Junior was lurking and knows about the plan, that Fathead doesn't even know about yet. 

      It's the day of the test and Fathead goes out and his sister tells him about the fake egg, he has to find it. The boy decides to not cheat and decides to use that big brain they've been saying he has and trick the T-Rex with a fake T-rex (by appealing to it wanting  mate).  We do get a dino chase scene and a cool pterodactyl tried. It was pretty cool he used his father's story to help think of this plan. 

    Anyway, since Junior thinks the egg on his head is the rock, he declares it fake and smacks it and it cracks open and he gets attacked by a baby T-Rex. Thus proving it wasn't fake and not having to be banished. 

      This was pretty fun to watch, I like how it looked.  The story was pretty interesting, taking place in caveman times, using the framing of the kids being more evolved over the adults but having the adults' old ways still providing some use was pretty good. 

   If it was a series , I could see it working. The concept has a lot of spaces to work , maybe world exploration. I think it work also work if it's not every episode being Junior vs. Fathead but would show rivalry.  It was also pretty nice to have a brother and sister not be at odds with each just because. 

     I do wonder if this one like, "Planet Kate" was meant  to do more than it made. This is another one I wish had ended up being a Nicktoon (another line I'm going to say alot) . I liked the concept and the story of the this cartoon.  It really was pretty interesting and glad it strayed away from anything like a random gross out moment just because caveman days.  

        So I enjoyed that, and give this a look for the fun of it.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons: #10: Planet Kate

                                                  #10 Planet Kate

 Season 1, Episode 13a 

        Planet Kate  is the longest short we've looked at so far, that's right it's 11 minutes instead of 7. So a more standard length of non 22 minute cartoon series. This was the part of the season 1 finale.  Created by Jamie Mitchell. It is interesting how this one is longer by 4 minutes, there must have been something they had planned for this, but  not in our timeline apparently.  

          This one even has a theme song intro, so something was happening. It takes place in the desert there's a girl named Kate talking to her mom as she's frantically looking for her map, which was a homework assignment.  Kate is voiced by Shayna Fox, whom was the voice of Reggie on "Rocket Power" that's why I had to tell you that, if you hear her voice and wonder huh? familiar.  She goes to look for her dog named Toby and she talks to us to say that alien dogs have arrived she hasn't told her parents about them. Apparently the dogs are there to dig up to find the lost city of dogs. 

      For the alien dogs they got the voice actors of Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Cree Summer , Nancy Cartwright. Stacked wow!  Yes, the dogs do have her map assignment.  They come back down to Earth with her dog with them as well.  Anyway, she figures out that they are using her map to find the hidden city,  the twist was the map wasn't a real thing, it was just for her assignment. 

 

   The alien dog group is sad that this was all for not, during their sadness they reveal a second half to the map, which is on a rock structure they dug up and it's apparently more map and some how Kate's map fits with the half they found.  

       They take her homework again, now realizing that by change it might be real.  She takes Toby with her and leaves them be, and we get the three saddest words ever, "To be Continued"

     That's right , there's a To be continued.  Now I'm sad.  First off this was a great start, there's an idea of this lost city of dogs being searched by aliens, they have a hook with the map proving to maybe be real, and the characters seem interesting.  The style also kind of reminds me of "Hey Arnold" crossed with "All Real Monsters" which is not a sentence I expected to write.  Kate does look  a little like Arnold's relative in some way. 

   

       I do wonder if Nickelodeon had bigger ideas for this one but then something fell through, that's sad, the to be continued line kind of hurts, I would like to see more. It was a fun short to watch, it was engaging. So yeah I did really like this one and now wish I could go to a parallel world where this was a series.  If you are alright with a little pain of watching something you know doesn't have more, then check this one out for the curiosity at least or to lament at what we could have had.

Season 1, Episode 11c

Hey look another short crated by Bill Burnett.  I kind of like the concept of personified bugs, there's something fun about that idea to me. This one is about an insect band who are trying to make it big, meaning to appeal to humans. 

                   The first song kind of feels like an 80's song with the lead singing bug , Mitzi, is giving me Joan Jett vibes. The bugs are in our normal world, so they are small and almost getting crushed under humans.  Mitzi gets an idea to visit a recording studio to appeal to humans.  

    The song the two humans singing is kind of funny how self aware it is.  They find a spider to help them with the stuff to record. Mitzi starts singing a love song about lightbulbs because she's a moth. Every song in this short is fun, I love that's there's  love song about a lightbulb.  They decide that humans don't want a love song about lightbulbs (sung like that, I'll take any song) 

      They make a song about going to Hollywood and making it big.  Then the record producer returns and bug sprays them, the other bugs think Mitzi is dead. The record executive shows up to hear the song that the humans were making and producer ends up flying the Feelers song. Mitzi isn't dead.  The executive now wants the Feelers. The short ends with the bugs dancing.  

                This is one I really wish had become a series, it seems like fun idea. The songs were really fun, they had that cool 80's vibe to them. I like character designs and the bug idea appeals to me. There's something really fun about this one.   There feels like potential in this one.(I'm going to be saying that alot too huh?)  

          This one didn't bug me. (boo!)  It's hard to find anything negative in some of these. since it's judging a seven minute short pilot that would have been modified if it had become a series. If I do find something I really don't like I note it, but that's not always going to be a big case.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons : #8: Youngstar 3

Season 1, Episode 10b 

         Another superhero theme huh?  A timeless idea. Youngstar3 was created by Miles Thompson. There are three superheroes Youngstar, a little boy,  Shero, a robot woman, and Old Man, an old man.  There's a giant monster causing havoc and our heroes have to go out and hero.  

   

           That's really what I can say about it from that point. It's 3 odd heroes fighting a giant fish monster. It's fun, I  like the three heroes they have their own unique characteristics and seem like an interesting team. The ideas they use to stop fight the monster are creative and really gives a really fun viewing expirence.

    

      I love the animation style too, it does fell very 90's (because duh) but it seems like it would fit on Nick or Cartoon Network at the time It feels like alternate world "Powerpuff Girls" by the simpe background designs and the character designs feel very Dexter's Lab/ Powerpuff Girls.   

   

         I think this would have been a fun series, there are so many ideas that could have been done for episodes, different monsters and villains. Giving the characters a little more personality through the episodes would have been fun to see. 

    There is something very charming about it, the jokes don't always land but they all feel earnest. And bonus points to having a grandpa be a superhero that's kind of fun, you don't see that really.  Give this one  a watch, it's fun.

2022 Oscar Nominations announced

                 The 94th Oscars  nominations were announced Tuesday. The best picture category has been expanded  to allow for 10 movies to vy for the top spot.  Netflix gets a 2 out of 10 chance of winning with Don't Look Up and Power of the Dog  ,  Dune from Warner Brothers did get a nod, and showing how the awards had to be flexible towards movies that didn't either have a theater launch or a hybrid model, especially in the animated category.    The Award show is set to air on March 27 at 8pet/5pt on ABC.
