It's A Lookback ,Charlie Brown : Play it Again , Charlie Brown

Peanuts  The Flashback

The  Special we take a look back at this month , is  Play it again , Charlie Brown the 7th Prime time special and it premiered in March of 1971.  This special focuses on  Schroeder  and Lucy, which if we did the specials in order this would be the first not to focus on Chuck or to an extent , Snoopy,  and of course this means Lucy trying to get Schroeder to pay attention to her.    The first few minutes is a  mixture of the opening with  Schroeder playing Beethoven music (of course)  and then Lucy grievances at  Linus and Snoopy dancing , then she visit Schroeder,  She  does the classic talking to him and trying to get is attention, talking about money ,which  Schroeder protests, then she does a spray can that plays Beethoven music.    Fredia (the girl with the curly hair) make a visit and does the Lucy thing of leaning on the piano when  Lucy comes over wondering what she's doing here. (First off , Locks save the world ) .

Keep attention this is a rare picture / Copyright Peanuts

After attempts and even kissing Schroeder (Full house audience wooooo sound) but he goes all Lucy "dog germs" act on her  and she  then confides to Peppermint Patty and Sally to help her out.  P.P suggests to Lucille that her idea is to get Schroeder to preform for the PTA it would be his big break. (Hope it's not the harper valley )    He seems happy about this and starts practicing.  Peppermint then brings the bad news that Beethoven is out  and Rock music is in. (I knew the day classical 102.5 would become rock was a sad one)  That of course gives Lucy a problem sense well you know.  Charlie Brown  suggests maybe they can get their "combo" back together and see if that would help.
That's Charlie Brown and the gang  / copyright Peanuts

Schroeder  doesn't really want to do this but Lucy tells him they don't want Beethoven they want rock at the PTA meeting. ( Lucky they weren't Chopin fans)   Charlie Brown then convinces him (wow CB did that)  and he goes along with it.  But he feels guilty that he sold out on Beethoven ( he feels like the co-op that went corporate man)  He tells Peppermint Patty that he can't go through with it and that he must stand for what he believes in.   Lucy has spray can PTA meeting and they will use that as entertainment. (ummm couldn't they have used Chuck's band? )   It ends with telling Schroeder that Beethoven wouldn't have made it to Nashville (or New Orleans either)  he leaves and Lucy plays rock and roll on the radio on his piano.
we are more a Mozart City

It's a very musical special and the focus on Lucy is interesting  , she wasn't really her mean side more her open pining lovey side. There is some funny moments like the spray can surreal jokes.  That's our lookback , tune in Next time for the special where Charlie Brown and his band make it big in Nashville.

Dr.Seuss Lookback : Hoober Bloob Highway

The Lookback

Today is Dr.Seuss' Birthday (if you are reading this on March 2nd) Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born on March 2nd ,1904 so we take a look back at one of his TV specials , in a fun fact... he had involvement in his TV specials.
Where do children come from ?  Well when ...(forget that)  they come from space , that is the Hoober Bloob Highway.

The one highway that never has congestion /Copyright  Dr.Seuss
The premise of the special is there's a man (in the non literal sense) named Hoober Bloob and he talks to a new born human baby  who he calls Bub. The Highway is a highway to earth... and the mission is to see what the human wants to be.   We see the human as young boy  as Hoober Bloob shows him some problems on Earth life... like Tigers in the Attic ( I hate when that happens) , milking a walrus,or a bathroom in a badly planned spot. The wheel is spun and the boy will end up in a place called West- Watch-a-ka-tella ( much better than the north)  The special then turns to seeing his life would be like  in West (you know the rest) where we have him grow through a bunch of commands and the chaos of life.
 math is hard/ Copyright Dr.Seuss
They ask him what he wants to be going through an assortment of creatures ,but showing how it would be a human some more.  Hoober Gloob gets a bit worked up  about  seeing what the Earth and has to be reminded by his lute that he has to remain neutral. (thanks lute)  The baby decides he wants to be go to Earth and be human. That's the special.

It's a 30 minute special ,but it's not story heavy , its very musical , it's pleasant and the imagery is wonderful and it has the Dr.Seuss wording and style.  It's one of my favorites of the TV specials.. If you never head of a book called that , that's because this one is TV original.   It's  a good special that says there's good in life and there's bad in life, but that's life. That's a good message that we can look for the good in things and that  we can try things and not always be successful.

If you ever wondered how to Milk a Walrus

I recommend while honoring the birthday with the books take a look at this special too.  Anyway that's our lookback .

The lookback :What happened to ALF?

The Flashback

We delve back into primetime TV in the past, and well ALF was canceled right during a cliff hanger, see cliff hangers aren't insurance, in 1990. NBC seemed to promise another season so they made this cliff hanger then NBC changed their minds and well ... oops.   In the final episode "Consider Me Gone" , ALF  hears  a broadcast from his friends Skip and Rhonda (people need to name their kids these again come on people do it!) and they found a planet.  The ATF hears the transmission ( ATF stands for Alien Task Force , not the other ATF) and ALF was captured.

NBC: That's what you think/  Copyright NBC

So  what happened to ALF? Well  it's 1996 (it is? cool I've gotta warn people about the macarena...ah it's too late)  so ABC (the A stands for Alf) made a TV music to tie up the loose ends. That brings us to Project :ALF (coming this fall to Bravo) . First mistake, the Tanners weren't there , now it could be hard to have like Brian some how be 6 years older if you continue right were you left off ... or they could have done a time skip , but then why are they taking 6 years to kill ALF?
Our movie starts with  the Alien  Task Force (you know were are going to call them the ATF for now on , that's too much writing) at a government panel to consider the future of ALF.  In fact the movie is a time skip , because the Tanners were put in a Witness Protection in 1990, (way to get out of that movie ) in Iceland.
There is footage of Alf's scientific evaluation which takes up a lot of time. Meanwhile ALF jailing  is more lax after charming the airmen that are holding him at the airforce base. Colonel Milfoil, played by Martin Sheen, talks about his mother who was abducted by aliens and she seemed to crazy and commit suicide.   He thinks ALF is a threat to the Earth , his plan is to fake a medical procedure to get rid of Alf.  Major Melissa Hill and Capt. Rick Mullican  see something strange about this and go to help ALF.
oh no! We're too late... oh wait nevermind/copyright ABC

The Major and Captain seem to have a thing for each other too  (awww love)  anyway they escape with ALF and go to a cheap motel.( Well we've never written that before)  Alf escapes and calls one of his guards. (Well that was dumb)  Then ALF goes to a strip club ( well  we wrote that now .. ummm ) Now his defense the place is called the Kitty  Cat lounge and he thinks they serve cat there. Rick helps out .  ALF  trades the van to a motel owner  for his car because everyone might be looking for a Van that the government on it.  They are on their way to  Dexter Moyers place, he was a former NASA Scientist , who was discredited by the government because he wanted UFO info released.
Yet the scientists who demoted Pluto ... not one was discredited /NASA
Dr.Moyes is fascinated by  ALF  and his plan is to go public with ALF and he would be safe. (That's were  Dog with A Blog got the idea from )  Rick  is not happy Dexter ,( he doesn't have showtime anyway)  and he finds on Dexter's computer something that might not up to snuff.  Oh year the military is looking for them.  Rick left the building  and calls the Air Force Base  of course he's being monitored. Dexter has some plan called Operation payback ,which is  a trap  he's going to sell ALF "...to the Highest bidder.  Meanwhile Rick has been arrested and he says he's ready to make a deal  only in exchange  for the safety of Alf and Melissa.
Though after ALF notices a change in Dexter , he locks himself a bathroom during the broadcast.  This allows the military to come and arrest Alf and Melissa. (Also the British talk show host ... said commercials... they don;t say commercials over the pond ....bad movie)  The deal of course ...the Colonel  changes his mind.  Now ... since ALF can't be killed off , there is a secret tape of the Colonel when his whole mission was revealed.   The committee promises to keep ALF protected  and the others are promoted , while I guess the other Colonel has been  I guess jailed.
  I guess that's closure.

Anyway ...well it had that Alf strangeness and ofcourse he was still himself , but it was an alright movie ...to bad no Tanners.

Tune in next time when we find out what really Happened to Doris Day's characters kids on the Doris Day show.

The Lookback :Rescue from Gilligan's Island

The Lookback

For  a full notice , I never really got into Gilligan's Island , not sure why but I tried watching it a few times and never clicked with me. Now that 96% of you left and the others are agreeing or don't care let's go on to our topic.   Apparently , Gilligan's Island ended with them still on the Island (sorry spoiler)  So In 1978 , 9 years after the show ended, NBC  made a movie.

It starts with them still on the Island... I guess the title  gives that away ,but wow that's a long time to be away.
"You know any longer this would have been a Netflix reboot"
It's also good that everyone is back , I at least the know the characters , and there was no cannibalism so that's nice.  Wait , movie where are going ?   A Country far way?    Ok computers and subtitles and flying satellite in space.... did I change movies?  It's  a spy satellite so the explode it and the disk falls into Gillgian's Island .    Gilligan finds the disk and professor makes it barometer, and a storm is coming. (That's bad)    The professor thinks up an  idea  to make the huts into a boat , so they can finally leave the island.
Anyway storm  comes carries the huts to sea  and now it's  a raft and they floating , Gilligan decides to cook fish on the raft  and this of course causes fire and smoke ,but luckily his stupidity saves the day after all as the coast gaurd sees the smoke and rescues them.
"And you said they were dead"
Apparently they've been gone for 15 years ( how long were they on the Island before the show started?)    They are also stunned that Jimmy Carter is president ( me too ).   They have a ticker tape parade.  So in our "other country" who seem to be communists  they are watching the parade on TV and they see their disk from spy satellite was on Gilligan.  wait what?   They are all going their separate ways :  Ginger is going to back to acting ,  Mary-Ann back to her fiance (ummm what could go wrong?) , and the professor back to professing.  ( I guess)   So now some dumb spies from our fake country  are looking to obtain the disk back  that's plotline for the movie about 50 minutes in.   Meanwhile , Ginger is acting again.. I haven't really watched the show So I guess she's an actress.  Movies have changed in 15 years and Ginger is bothered by the movie she is working in is filthy it's all sex and swearing now. ( Unlike this post)
movies have changed ...there's more chairs now
Gilligan and Skipper visit Ginger so she can sign some insurance papers so they can get a new boat.  Also there were no dirty words in Star Wars and Jaws was clean , lets name drop some more movies of the times.   The producer decides to change his mind and makes it less dirty  (problem fixed?)
Also  our spies are thwarted again , but to the professor  now  , and he is surrounded by cheerleaders.
Sorry this is a classroom , the gym is downstairs

All the professor wants to do is work but a lady one is kissing him and now the Skipper and Gilligan visit him. He was busy inviting the Frisbee, which was already invented. (wow time has flown)  The Dean wants the professor to speak more to have people donate to the college, since he's a celebrity now.  Oh great the spies are back as they try and fail at disk getting let's move on.
The  Howells are having dinner with some old friends ( they are rich) .
Still rich after all these years

Skipper and Gilligan come to visit the Howells for the paper signing  in the library  they overhear the rich friends  making insults  about Skipper and Gilligan and the friends are thrown out  of the house.   Now to Mary Ann , where we find out that Mary Ann after 15 years doesn't love her finance Herbert anymore but feels obligated to marry him anyway. (Also this is her wedding day)  They see Mary Ann's friend Cindy is in love with Herbert  and he with her, but Mary Ann wants marry because he waited so long.  So Gilligan and Skipper help  stop this mistake  and Cindy and Herbert marry.  Now it's Christmas... (uhh what a jump)    They spies try and take the metal , but the F.B.I  shows up  ( I guess that makes sense) and  that's over.  The castaways set off on Minow II  and  a storm hits and guess what? They end up back on the same island they started this movie and the series from.

The End. .. well that was an ending ... you know if this movie was made to appease fans  then why put them back on the Island!!!!!?     That's our lookback  tune in next time when  we see the episode after Friends where  Rachel turns right back and around and gets on the plane , but 15 years later.

The Peanuts Lookback : She's a Good Skate , Charlie Brown

The Flashback  Peanuts

Since it's winter, still that means ice skating,  That takes us to Charlie Brown.  For note: this specail airs every year ABC plays it with  "Happy New Year Charlie Brown"  (watch ABC make us look stupid this year) but it's not a Holiday special so it fits in these set of lookbacks.   She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown came out in February of 1980. (honestly we didn't know the date until now and that's some good timing guess here)
This special is about Peppermint Patty (yay!) and it starts with her ice skating with Snoopy as her coach.  (Some of you are surprised that  P.P ice skates)    Peppermint Patty is having problems staying up class  because she's been getting up at 4:30AM  each morning to practice Ice Skating. (That's crazy not even local news should be on at that time)

Sleep loss also causes Sandal wearing in snow / copyright peanuts

We some of her training with Snoopy at the early time in the morning . (Snoopy is not Snoppy without is morning cofee)  Meanwhile , some hockey players  begin to bug Peppermint Patty (and they keep calling her beautiful , which is the weirdest insult ever )  She and Snoppy take out the whole 10 hockey kids in 2 pushes.   You know  Snoopy is a pretty ruthless coach too.   Marcie helps Peppermint Patty with her dress for the skating competition , though she was more drafted into it by Peppermint Patty.

Fabrics Notions  right next to Mom's  Deli ... with the best foods /Copyright Peanuts
When Marcie ,who repeatably said, that she wasn't good at sewing  the dress turns out bad.

Either that or a new fashion trend/ Copyright Penaunts
Luckly , Snoopy saves the day , since he is a good tailor and dress maker (of course he is)  She also wants  help with her hair.  She didn't like the wig Snoopy suggested so she gives that up.  Now it's the day the competition  Snoopy has the new job of Zamboni driver (Snoopy runs the entire U.S economy)   There's also the "hey we paid to watch a special so we are going to see the whole competition set of scenes" until we get to see Peppermint Patty's turn.  Something goes wrong though as her tape (aww the 80's)  does what tapes do  and falls apart.  If she doesn't get music quick she could be disqualified.   Woodstock saves the day as he whistles a tune (the sound of an angel ).

"Darn it , I wish I brought another tape" /copyright Peanuts
She wins (if this was Charlie Brown.. on the other hand...)

Pretty much, it's nice to have a Peppermint Patty focused episode and the  music in the background is nice plus it had it's funny parts and it's interesting to see P.P doing something that's not either being conflicted about her feelings for Chuck or baseball.

wait! we have more after the Jump
