It's A Lookback, Charlie Brown: It's and Adventure ,Charlie Brown

Peanuts  The Flashback

As we tap into our next Peanuts lookback, we realize that not all the specials have a singular plot. Some plots from the comic strip are not long enough to fill in a whole 24 minutes (minus commercials) special.     But  what about one special that has to fill  about 48 minutes (again, minus the commercials in a 60 minute slot)?  That's what we are taking a look at this time. (If we did this in video form  this would be easier)

"It's an Adventure , Charlie Brown" aired on CBS in May of 1983  it's considered the inspiration of the Charlie Brown and Snoopy show, which took  the vignette format and used it to it's episodes instead of doing two eleven minute segments. Since , this is a vignette format we are going to look at each one separately.  So let's get started.

Sack

Yes , Charlie Brown has hit the sack/ Copyright Peanuts

So the sun rises  and sun looks like a baseball and this makes Charlie Browns seek therapy with  Lucy, but since it's Lucy It doesn't go anywhere. Then he sees the moon and it also looks like a baseball. (he's addicted to baseball, there solved)   When Sally gets him an ice cream cone guess what? (It looks like Mr.s Butterworth?) So Linus suggests  Charlie go see a real doctor.   He's also wearing a sack over his head. (That gives the title some sense)  The doctor says he should go to camp to get his head off it.  (Back when drugs weren't always the answer)
"Kamp out" hmmm  turn around , Charlie Brown it's a trap!/Copyright Peanuts

Charlie Brown continues to wear the sack on his head because , why not?  There's a meeting at the camp to pick a new camp president. (That's a thing?)  After the voting , Charlie Brown becomes the new camp president. With the nick name , Sack.

The face of leadership/ Copyright Peanuts

Apparently , things go well for Charlie "Sack" Brown  or would that be  Charlie Brown "Sack"?   He passes wise advice ,fixes the food, stops a fight. He has made the camp a great place.  Charlie Brown though contemplates if he should remove the sack . One morning, he decides to check the sun on the Fourth of July (random)  to see if the sun is the sun or a baseball.  (makes sense in context)
                                                              What does he see ?
                                                           a)  Sun
                                                           b)   Baseball
                                                           c)  nothing he falls asleep
                                                            d) Trick Question

If you answered D , then you are wise, because he sees  Alfred E. Neuman from Mad Magazine.

Two worlds collide./ copyright Peanuts
That's "Sack" , the moral of the story:  Wear a paper bag on your head and you will go places and be a great leader.

  Caddies

Peppermint Patty applies to be a caddie  and takes Marcie with her at a country club. (Quite, I'm sure)  They find two women golfers to caddie for.  Mrs. Nelson  and Mrs. Bartley. Two women agure over strokes.  (Ahh Golfers)  This one is not as plot driven as the first one , it's a lot of gags with Marcie.  We do find out that Snoopy is a golfer at the county club. (Well of course he uis)  The two ladies fight again which happens periodically.  By the fourth hole  Marcie quits and demands that she get a dollar for the 4 wholes. (It worked!)  The Caddy master wants half of their mone, but Marcie and Peppermint don't accept that and he only gets ten percent.

That was caddies.   Moral of the story: sometimes it's good to get fed up and don't give in easy while give up anyway or something.

Kite

Back to Charlie Brown... and his old arch enemy (Mr.Burns?)  - The  Kite eating tree.  (I was close)
The K.T.E ate his kite . (Living up to its name)  Charlie Brown tells the tree he hates it.  Then it eats his next kite. Charlie Brown bit into the tree. (what am I watching?)
Charlie Brown bit into a tree that is something I'd never thought I'd write/ Copyright Peanuts

Charlie Brown gets a letter from the E.P.A  and they are after him for biting the tree. (Darn government getting in the way of people's rights)  He decides the only thing to do is run away. (it's logical)   We also see the Goose eggs (Ruby and  Austin ) in this special what a nice surprise.  They accidentally with a baseball.  They are looking for an older person to be a coach for their team.   The other goose eggs : Leland and Milo meet him as well. Charlie Brown teaches the team how to do baseball.  As Charlie Brown sleeps in a box each night because  life is hard when the E.P.A is after you.

From sack to box /copyright Peanuts

Ruby decides to name their team the Goose Eggs , after Charlie Brown tells her it means that you haven't scored any runs. (I like her optimism)  They have a competing teaming  which happens to be Charlie Brown's old team.   Linus informs him that kite eating tree fell over in a storm  and the E.P.A has no evidence.  (yes, "fell over" )  and Milo says he wants to be just like Charlie Brown.
awwww/ copyright Peanuts

Fun note : This was directly based on a storyline in the strips from 1977. It starts on February 21st and runs into March check it out : http://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1977/02/21

Moral of the story:  The EPA has too much time on their hands.

But First These Messages: Cars Cars Trucks and Vans (probably not that last one )

But First These Messages

Cars are probably the most advertised things besides insurance... (which you will need for your car....oh)   and yet we really haven't featured the things here because well that's how we roll. (boo)

   But First these messages...

Lee Iacocca  became the head of Chrysler right went Chrysler needed a hero , but just make you knew he was there he showed up in commercials.

I do wanna say he randomly started with Ford and it's not because he used to work there but, maybe.

The Town and Country? Where have I heard that name before , Chrysler?

He also  says at the the end  if you find a better car, buy it!  Not saying Chrysler is the best or if you find a better car than that convertible  we will give you a discount or something no , just if you find a better car buy it.   Also better is subjective.

This was his idea at Ford.... /image:  Wikipedia

That commercial was fine an everything , but  it doesn't look 80's we need some eighties in our eighties commercials.

Oh  well that's more 80's than I thought

On the next episode of "Knight Rider"....

For like the first  51 seconds there's no car in this car ad, or even a mention of a car.  Then...
I think Dodge took over the world and became a dictator somehow... darn self driving cars.

I forgot is this a Dodge commercial or is a remake of "Christine"?   He was also inside the car the whole time.... what the heck?

Ok Chrysler ... we don't want to look so Chrysler biased so how about some  Ford?

It's refreshing to see an not have the words saying "Don't Try this" because well duh.
I wonder if the truck did it's own stunts though.

More trucks ...  after the jump

The Lookback : Yogi the Easter Bear

Easter  The  Flashback

Easter is a holiday but doesn't really get alot of specials or songs so I've mostly not tired to look for a special , though I could have written about the Easter Beagle Peanuts special. I was under the assumption that there really wouldn't be much to do , but then I found this special that is only 22 years old.   Remember Yogi Bear ?  Yeah , bears have to do with Easter ,I guess. (Easter  the season of bearing it all?)     "Yogi the Easter Bear" was a Hanna and Barbera special by Turner Entertainment  for syndication. (Probably aired on Cartoon Network at some point too) It premiered in April of 1995. This special notes the last time that  voice over artist Don Messick did the voice of Boo boo and the park ranger-he died 2 years later.

The special starts with narration and apparently Jellystone Camp is getting ready for the Easter Jamboree which is the start of the camping season. (What if Easter is in March?)  Ranger Smith (the Ranger) is getting ready for the event.  This year he's a little stressed out because the supreme commissioner is coming . (Apparently, he put out a forest fire with his bear hands (only you can stop forest fires don't mean that literally) )  He wants everything to fine  so they don't close the park or something.     Meanwhile, our hero (?) Yogi Bear  finds the candy in the back of the truck and tricks the ranger guarding it  to leave his post and tries to take the candy but Ranger Smith catches him.  Smith tells him that it's an important day and to leave the candy alone , stay in his cave or he's going to the Siberian circus.

Yogi finds an Easter Bunny outfit and disguises himself  to obtain the candy.  He tells the guarding ranger (who was a bad plan) that he is the Easter Bunny and tricks him and eats the candy from the  truck.  The ranger tells Smith that he saw the Easter Bunny  and Smith figures out that it was Yogi, who ate all the candy.  Smith plans to send Yogi to the Siberian Circus. (oops )  Boo Boo suggests  that maybe he and Yogi could go find the real Easter Bunny , but Ranger Smith tells them there is no Easter Bunny. (Well that's our Easter Special it's over now)  Boo Boo asks why he doesn't believe in the Easter Bunny and the Ranger explains that he wanted Double Decker raspberry egg but never got one.

Interesting they hire rangers at a young age/copyright Turner

Yogi and Boo Boo decide to go look for the real Easter Bunny  after all , so of course their plan is to ask the Grand Grizzly. (What am I watching?)  You know what this special is missing (explosions?)  yes, villains. Apparently a bad guy and his stupid sidekick want to do something about the Easter Bunny. What? You may ask, we don't know yet... like 12 minutes in to our 46 minute special.  Back the bears. They go the  Grand Grizzly's cave to ask him if he knows the Easter Bunny. (Yahoo search would be easier ) He says the Easter Bunny is in the sky or something. (He wasn't very helpful)
Seems sane to me /Copyright Turner

The Supreme ranger and his two grand kids have made it to Jellystone. Also he hates problems. Ranger Smith couldn't tell him that there was one so, back to the bears.  They find a giant rabbit shaped mountain where the Easter Bunny's house is. (At least I hope it's his house)  They make it to Easter Bunny's house  but it's all a mess and there's a message that says Help Me. (Gee , I wonder who stole  him)  Yogi and Boo Boo follow a trail of jelly beans to the factor where the bad guys have the Easter Bunny tied up.  Their plan  is to kidnap him and steal eggs to make people buy their plastic eggs.

Sorry you are all tied up  / copyright Turner

The Easter Bunny tells the short villain about the Easter Chicken who makes the eggs but won't tell him where he is so, he tries to dip the Bunny into a plastic melting vat, when Yogi and Boo Boo come in disguised as health inspectors.  Also I got both  their names now : Paulie and Ernest. They almost get out but Yogi wants some cake accidentally gets his mustache off and they figure it out.   Yogi ends up getting Boo Boo and the Easter Bunny out.  Meanwhile the Jamboree isn't going so well, I think.  Yogi and Boo Boo have to visit the Easter Chicken to get more eggs ,but the security dog won't let them in. (There's an easy solution to their problem but I won't stay it.)  Paulie and Ernest have their own plan to get in and get the Easter Chicken.  Yogi and Boo Boo finally make it into the hen house.

The chicken has an effective system/copyright Turner
Yogi gets the hen out before Ernest (in an Easter bunny outfit) made it in.  He was supposed to drop a dynamite laced Easter basket to blow up the hen house. But guess what? The dog brings it back to Ernest and it blows up.(Classic) The dog figures out that Ernest wasn't the Easter Bunny.  The bunny, hen , Yogi , Boo Boo make their trek to Jellystone  but Ernest and Paulie chase after them, so Yogi shoots eggs at them causes them to destroy their truck and fall off a cliff into a bee farm. (Stingy)   Eventually , they make it to Jellystone Park. (Yay Saint Patrick's day is saved!)    Ranger Smith finally gets what he wanted for Easter (thank goodness) and he gets a promotion. (Easter miracle!)   Yogi gets to stay as well.

     That's the special.

Our quick review:  It felt like a classic Yogi Bear cartoon just with a smoother 90's animation style. It has some of the classic H&B  humor style and the voice acting is great. Charlie Adler provides the voice to Paulie  he's the same guy that did the voice to Buster Bunny on Tiny Toon Adventures.  The Man who voiced the Easter Bunny was also the man who voiced Yakko Warner and Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Rob Paulsen.  It's a silly but fun Easter special.

You can get it on DVD now as well.

The Lookback : Arthur 20.5 : April 9th

Arthur20.5

Back in September of 2016 we did an event of posts (that's a thing right?)  that was focused on Arthur as the series turned 20 we looked at one (or one half) episode of each of the seasons (at the time 19, season 20 hadn't come out yet).  With all that there was a lot of interest in Arthur and we got emails asking about more Arthur and even episode requests. so what better way than to try and do some more Arthur?  (If you have your own requests or ideas for this blog you can email them to our email address  mychiller@gmx.com   or tell us on our google plus page : +mychiller )

This episode was requested a few times , and thought this would be a good time to get on it. The season finale of Season 7 episode 105 in total, April 9th.

April 9th premiered in October of 2002 and is a two part episode.

If you missed our format of this ,when we did this September  I broke up the posts with a look at the monologue , the thing Arthur does at the start of episodes ,then a summary of the episode. then finish with my thoughts.

Monologue :  Sue Ellen takes  the reigns this episode as she writes in her journal and starts telling us about a beautiful early spring day that changed the lives of so many people.  It's April 9th (don't look at me like that)  and it seems like a normal  day when at school when the fire alarm goes out and everyone is rushed out of the school.

Episode:  The firefighters take care of the situation and Mr.Morris , the janitor  is taken away in an ambulance.   Arthur worries about his father who didn't come out  until the firefighters got him out, while Sue Ellen's journal was destroyed , Buster came in late for school and didn't experience what happened, and Binky  seems to be affected by the fire after seeing some of the flames.    The kids have to spend their time at another school, the famous in the series : Mighty Mountain.

hmmmm did you do something to your..ears?/copyright  WGBH

Muffy tires to replace Sue Ellen's journal but Sue Ellen doesn't accept. Buster wonders why he doesn't feel as upset about the fire as the other kids and wishes that he felt something. Arthur worries about his father and has a dream that when his father is catering at an aquarium that a giant squid  grabs his father. (What?)   Buster visits Mr.Morris at the hospital and they start to connect.  (What a nice friendship)   Muffy tries again with a journal and even a pen! Sue Ellen accepts this one . (The Pen was the deal maker)  Then the fire alarm goes off what happens next? more after the jump,

The Lookback: Archie goes young

The Flashback

Archie had a long absence from the television though the comics continued it was time for him and the gang to return.  This brings us to the year called 1987.  Dic  along with NBC brought uas a new Archie series, it was the first non Filmation  "Archie" based series. Saban also got to help along in this project.  This is what is called "The New Archies" (New means better right? )

This series decided to be new by de-aging the Archies  to pre-teens in middle school or junior high. (That makes sense)

This later spawned  a comic as well.
you can now buy this issue for $5.00!
Let's see what the critics had to say about this  TV series though.

"The New Archies" captures neither the doo-wop '50s humor of Bob Montana's original comic strip, nor the bubble gum rock sound that made the Filmation cartoon series a hit from 1968-78. The characters have been shifted to junior high (which means their adult heads are incongruously stuck on adolescent bodies) and given an upscale wardrobe by Guess?/Esprit. Nothing distinguishes "The New Archies" from countless other shows about groups of kids, except its utter lack of humor. Miss Grundy should flunk the writers and artists.
                                                                                                          --- The LA Times

I guess that means it's a good series then.
It's so 80's

I am going to do what I did  with the the "Archie's Mysteries" series and look at an episode of the series, and of course going with episode 1.  In-speaking of episode 1 , this series has 14 episodes and that's it, so it did well.

The first 11 minutes block is called "The Visitor".
Archie is sitting by some weird machine and he instantly dozes off  and hits the machine by accident causing it to do whatever it's doing.  Apparently it's an invention made by a kid named Eugene. Yes, Dilton doesn't show up in this series Eugene replaced him for this series and just this series.   The machine escapes out the window and the three (Archie, Jughead, and Eugene) chase it. I guess school is over.  The machine stops and sends a beam into space  where it hits an alien's ship. (What am I watching?)  The alien space ship crashes to Earth and it crushes the machine in the process. (R.I.P machine)  Also the alien's ship doesn't seem to work anymore either.
Like a good neighbor I should have gotten State Farm / Copyright DHX

Un important editor's note:  Dude is a timeless word , but umm they mentioned it alot in this exchange..
  Back to the lookback.

Archie dresses the alien  to disguise him like a normal kid.

Well I can't tell now / Copyright DHX

Now they are back at school (I don't think the  day changed , I just think the school really doesn't care).   Betty and Veronica are cheer leaders, and Betty calls her Ronnie. (Ah the 80's) Archie brings in  (I'm going to call the Alien , Dude just to make this simple)  Dude to watch him pratice basketball.    Dude sees Betty and Ronnie (yes I know)  and he howls and has hearts for eyes. (ah cartoons)  He jumps into Betty's arms and gives her a hug then he decides to rush into the basketball practice.  They find out that  Dude is good at basketball.
Darn budget cuts , we only have two cheer leaders / copyright DHX

But forget that , that spaceship is fixed but there's one problem -- no fuel.  So now the plot is to find some fuel.  Reggie over hears them and finds out there's an alien a foot and thinks about the only thing you can think about with an alien near by- - - the money.  (of course)  He gets Veronica into his plan.
This the most 80's thing we've seen/ Copyright DHX

Veronica tricks  Dude into a trap by saying that Betty is outside and he runs and gets captured by Reggie. (Darn love of Betty gets aliens captured)   So Archie chases after them on his skateboard. We also find out the fuel that his ship needs is hamburgers. (I see)   Dude sees Betty and jumps out of the bike basket. (Yes he could have left before that)  Archie then grabs him from Betty and they met up with Jughead who flew the spaceship to Pop's. (That was a sentence)  They say their goodbyes and Dude flies away before  Ronnie and Reggie make it to Pop's where her Father is waiting.

End of part one  , Dudes
