But First These Messages: Power us Up

But First These Messages

Without batteries we wouldn't have anything portable really, and they really provide us a service that we take for granted. It's interesting . even though batteries are so big in our world, they still have to be advertised to us.

Batteries ... But First these, messages.

In the 1990's  Duracell envisioned a world  where plastic people obviously killed off all the humans and took over the world, but they had to be powered by batteries.  The Puttermans  appared in  Duracell ads between 1994 to 1996.

I have some questions , how do they put the batteries in, or does someone have to put hte batteries in for them?
Also batteries are their life force , yet the have to buy them?
Also did they kill that woman , or will they give her a new battery later?
          So many questions!

Hmm I think they killed her

In this world, even the pets are battery operated.  This is the future folks! Wake up ! (bonk on the head )
This bird later got a sitcom called Everybody loves Birdy.

That bird is annoying, was anyone else expecting one of them to take the battery out , I was kind of thinking that, maybe I have dark thoughts, it's that last commercial's fault!

This commercial again makes me ask so many questions , like they can go in the water? Also the fish are battery powered , when they eat "meat" does that mean the batteries are taken and then they eat the food?
That's the face that's seen things

It's a Lookback , Charlie Brown : A Charlie Brown Celebration

 The Flashback  Peanuts

Charlie Brown needs to be celebrated so this was it.  "A Charlie Brown Celebration" is a Peanuts special from may of 1982 on the CBS network (of course).  It was an hour long special , which sparked CBS to pick up a new animated weekly series called "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show".   This special is  pretty much a collection of Peanuts stories that would be too long to make a 30 minute (24 Minutes+ Commercials) special.  Also Charles Schulz himself introduces the special and  he explains how the special will work which is nice and handy.

The segments have varying lengths  kind of like how Schulz explains his comic strips can be one timers or have a story line that runs for weeks. In other words this is like a celebration of Charlie Brown and the gang in animated form.

The first segment ,called School, is about a minute long with Sally doing her classic laments about school starting.  A short bump where Lucy tickles Snoopy and he falls of his dog house  and giggles some more.  Then it goes back to school ,but the time has skipped to the first day of school  with more laments about school by Sally Brown.   Then it's Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder in classes. Again it's just about another minute long.

That's not how you sit in a desk / Copyright Peanuts

The second segment is called Kite.  Charlie Brown does his famous kite flying and he gets caught in a tree. Then it turns  into a segment about Lucy and Linus talking about Edgar Allen Poe.  Charlie Brown does more kite flying  and gets everyone all tangled up.

 All Tied up/ Copyright Peanuts

The third segment : Charlie Brown's School Days.  Back to school (wow!)   We have Linus in his class writing about learning to butter up a teacher.  This segment is about our main characters in school.

Linus is right/ Copyright Peanuts

The Fourth segment is called "Sally" it's about Sally (of course) but there's  also get the Peanuts character, Eudora.  It takes place at camp and it's mostly about Eudora teasing Snoopy, whom Sally brought with her.

Eudora in the Middle / Copyright Peanuts

The Fifth segment is called "Sally and Linus" which is about Lucy and Franklin. (alright I'm kidding just making sure you are paying attention)   Linus reads about his camping and gets to queen snakes which makes his teacher faint.  Sally has a hard time drawing a cow leg and complains and gets sent to the principal's office.

What are you in for? / Copyright Peanuts

The Sixth segment is called "Peppermint Patty".   Peppermint Patty is looking for a private school to attend. Because she's Peppermint Patty she thinks Snoopy is a human and so of course a suggestion was Ace Obedience school. (She was looking for a cheap private school so her father wouldn't have to spend so much.)  She tells Charlie Brown  he tries to explain it to her but of course she's Peppermint Patty, she doesn't listen to anyone.  She goes to the school and notices that everyone else has  a dog and that there are no desks.  Marcie asks her how was her day?  Apparently , Peppermint Patty didn't notice it was dog school. Charlie Brown tells Snoopy that Peppermint Patty is not going to be happy with the beagle when she finds out it's a school for dogs. (Ha ha when she finds out)  She's still at the school and apparently the school doesn't think this is strange at all. (What kind of world is this?)  She graduates. (Again what is this place?)  Also Marcie still doesn't tell her  but implies that she knows and just doesn't tell P.P.   Marcie the next day, tells her that the teacher has been asking where she has been.  She asks for attorney (Snoopy) to prove she has graduated , Snoopy of course is nervous because she may find out the truth now. (May)  Peppermint Patty does find out and looks for Snoopy. (probably to show him how she knows how fetch now)  She then gets into a fight with a cat the mean one who lives next door. (That escalated quickly) Peppermint Patty and Snoopy end up fighting World War 2 (the cat) and I think they lost. P.P goes back to people school.

This was the longest segment so far.

 More after the jump

Look what the cat dragged in / Copyright Peanuts

The Seventh Segment :  Linus.   This one Linus and Sally are on a field trip. It's mostly Sally being annoyed by school some more.  Linus remembers the place they went before and then he is reunited to famous peanuts character, Truffles.  Sally gets jealous and she and Truffles start fighting over Linus.  He goes on the roof and he refuses to get down until they stop fighting.  Then he gets stuck.  She asks Snoopy and Woodstock to rescue him which I guess they do.

Aww Luffles / Copyright Peanuts

The Eight Segment is Piano.  Lucy is doing her classic interact with Schroeder at his piano. She tells him how if they were married she would dust his piano every day. The she temps him for reaction by talking about Beethoven.   It's pretty much Lucy and Schroeder doing their normal segment.  Eventually she throws his Piano into the sewer. (not very nice) Charlie Brown helps him and they go down to where the water goes but it was a lost cause, so he buys a new one.

Then he threw her down the sewer / Copyright Peanuts

The Ninth Segment is called  Lucy , in this one Lucy in angry that she isn't thankful for anything, Linus tries to help. So he does something sweet and she cries.  Then Lucy has  Linus get fire wood  while she plays jokes on him and talks about  Abe Lincoln.  (random)

awwww/ copyright Peanuts

The Tenth segment : Peppermint Patty and Marcie.   Marcie doesn't really like playing baseball. She also recommends that they need caps. So she takes initiative  and tries to make some caps. They go through a cycle of caps that annoy Peppermint Patty.  P.P sees that a baseball team is having a free cap day for children, so her plan is to run through nine times to get nine caps. (Yes this plan has flaws we could point out.)  Marcie runs after the first cap , Peppermint Patty quits on her plan.

Hmm fly ball/ Copyright Peanuts

The Eleventh segment, Charlie Brown.    Charlie Brown was pitching and he's feeling sick and decides to go home.  Charlie goes to the E.R by himself.  Sally can't find him and apparently decides that it's a good time to move into his room. (Long running Peanuts Gag)   Then she finds out that Chuck is in the hospital. (You maybe asking where the parents are, well Barber's picnic and C.B didn't want to bother them or know where it is or something.)  Meanwhile, Charlie Brown wonders if he's dead.  Everyone else is worried even Lucy. (Yes her too)  She even cries.  Peppermint Patty and Marcie are turned away at the hospital because they are too young. (This didn't stop Chuck and Linus in Why Charlie Brown Why,)  The Continuing theme of Marcie being in love with C.B continues she wants him to ask her to the prom in the future.   Lucy is unhappy when Charlie Brown's mom says he's not any better, and  promises that she would never pull the football away again if he gets away.   Then Charlie Brown gets better.  So the football thing happens and Charlie Brown doesn't kick the ball  and kicks her hand. (Darn it Schulz , darn it!)

The one where Charlie Brown doesn't die/ Copyright Peanuts

That's the special.  This was the first of three television specials for the Peanuts that featured multiple stories that others were : "It's and Adventure , Charlie  Brown" and "Snoopy the Musical"  but this was the first one.  I like the idea of taking some story lines that aren't long enough  to be  24 minutes long.  And none of the segments feel like they go on to long.  Since it's the peanuts there are alot of gags that made me laugh and there is of course some sweetness too.  It's great to see the variety of characters even including Eudora and Truffles is a nice touch.

That's the special tune in next time when see how Truffles and Linus are doing now.

Halloween : The Lookback : Garfield's Halloween Adventure

Halloween  The Flashback  Garfield

I write alot about the Peanuts because I adore them. but I do like other comic strips, and there's one long running famous cat that also like the Peanuts has translated into television media. So let's take a look at  a Garfield Halloween special.

Garfield's Halloween Adventure (originally called "Garfield in Disguise") is the fourth Garfield television special. It premiered on CBS (this is becoming a common network for comic  strips to TV adaptions around here) on October 30th 1985  It also won an Emmy in 1986. Sadly this doesn't get an outing.  Let's take a look.

The special starts with something you don't see now, television stations a) being off the air over night b) signing on for the day c) local kid show clowns (before anti-clown propaganda started).  Binky the Clown wakes up Garfield from his sleep and makes him do some jumping jacks , and Garfield tries to find the remote control to turn off the show.   Then he hears that's it Halloween and that there's candy to get.

The music in this special is done by Lou Rawls and  Lorenzo Music  the latter being the voice of Garfield. (imagine Lou Rawls being the voice of  Garfield that would be something).  He decides to have Odie join him for trick or treating  so he can have two bags of candy.  Then they  look for their costumes.   John doesn't seem to mind that his cat and dog are going out  for Tricks or treats so there we go.

It's Halloween night and they go trick or treating. Odie is scared of  people in costume  but some of the things in costume aren't humans , but scary super natural things. ( i am not surprised in this world)  The two of them  go trick or treating and get candy as per tradition.  Garfield decides to go on a boat to get to the other side and try more houses for candy.   Garfield tells Odie to put out the oars , he does  that in his case he mean throw them off the boat.  They have to ride the river by itself.  They eventually find land and an old house.

They think the home is deserted but there's somebody living there. An old man startles them in his chair.  He decides to tell them that they picked a bad night to visit and then a story.  He says that the Island has holds a dark secret for 100 years. Pirates were running from troops they buried the treasure on the Island . but they vowed to return for the treasure a 100 years later.  (oooh my)  Garfeild doesn't believe it  and he says he was their cabin boy.  Then he takes Garfield and Odie's boat and candy.

At midnight (spooky) they look to see if the pirates show up, the pirates show up. They were dying to get there apparently. (Yes they are dead and ghosts now) The Animation used is most amazingly haunting thing to see , especially in Garfield.  Garfield and Odie  run and try to swim away for it, but Garfield can't swim. (oops)  Luckily Odie saves him (plus you know , Garfield can't die) and they make it to the other side and find their boat and candy.  They make it home.  He gives Odie a bag of candy. (awww)  He tries to watch TV it has an all night pirate movie thing so he goes to bed instead.

The Lookback : They are Newly Ooky and Spooky

The Flashback

In the  1990's ( don't run away we just started)  there seemed to be a new renewed interest in "The Addams Family".  The likes of which the characters hadn't seen since the 70's .  There was the popular "Addams Family" movie from 1991, an animated series in 1992, a sequel big screen movie in 1993, some video games, and made for TV movie in 1998.  So maybe it was time for a new live action series too?  In 1998   the Canadian Company  Shavick Entertainment  and the American company , Saban Entertainment decided , yes it was time to make a new Addams Family. That would be known as "The New Addams Family" the idea was to be a revival of the 1960's TV series.

It premiered  in 1998 , in the states it aired on Saban and Fox owned , Fox Family. The series had 65 episodes, one more than the original 60's series.   The first episode is aptly called "Halloween with the Addams Family". We are going to look at the episode since it's near Halloween anyway  (unless you are reading later or something)

    First, the theme song

As you can see it goes for a more jazzy up beat theme than the classic theme so that was something.  At least they didn't try to 90's it up and make seem more "extreme" or something it also can show that this is a comedy.

A fun note about this series before we jump into the first episode:   John Astin, the man who  Gomez on the 1964 series came back to guest star as Grandpapa   Addams so that's a nice touch.

The First episode , Gomez  wakes up and it's Christmas! No wait it's Halloween and he's excited!  He gives Morticia a gift, a pair of handcuffs. (woah this is a family show ) It's nice to see how they give Gomez and Morticia that loving relationship that they are known.   Two crooks are trying to  run from the cops (hey this reminds of me that Halloween episode from the 64 series)  end up at the Addams' house and they are invited in.  Jerry Van Dyke guest stars in this episode too. Gomez and  Morticia think they are trick or treaters and see they have cash in their bag ,so they chose to give them more cash. (Yep  this is like the Halloween episode of 64 series , I am going to only say that twice)  Jerry Van Dyke (they didn't give him a name)  and the son co -criminal decide to rob them but of course they think it's a game.
This is still not as strange as doing "My Mother the Car"

The Addams Family asking the criminals to beat them up and torture them is just too funny.  Meanwhile , the Addams' kids : Wednesday and Puglsey are dressed as Siskel and Ebert.  -- The one thing that maybe hurts this series is all the pop references the show makes it's  not like the original series where that can seem more timeless, but at the same time the aren't too distracting to take away from the show so far.  There's one house where the kids stop off and the couple asks for a trick they don't know what kids they just got.   Meanwhile Jerry Van Dyke and other guy tie up the Addams. They go around looking for the valuables and get freaked out by the house.  After the Addams' kids torture that couple by hooking them up to electricity then they stop a bully by blowing him up. (oh my!)
If critics don't like this they will be criticizing themselves

Jerry Van Dkye finds the money he wants after they are told by Morticia where it is.  After they bored they get out of the ropes and search for them. Jerry and the other guy try to run away, while Grandmama goes searching for dinner, which escaped. ( I hate when that happens)  Jerry and crime son are frightened by the normal Addams Family stuff.  Their children are brought home for terrorizing the neighborhood and the robbers are caught by the police.

Ah a happy end!

What can I say?  It's an alright show, they did recycle a plot from the 64 series, but maybe they were trying to make it feel new but familiar.  The actors did a good job playing the characters kind of copying  the 64 series.  Though the children were given more of the personalities of  the movie portrayals.  The 1964 series ( yes I am saying that alot ) did play off the reactions of "ordinary" people to this family  so this episode at least did that well.   Starting the series off with Halloween was a nice touch since that makes sense.  Anything else I've said is said above.

That's our quick but simple lookback , tune in next time when we found a Munsters - Addams Family cross over !
