It's a Lookback . Charlie Brown: You're A Good Sport

Peanuts

There's  Peanuts specials that feature the gang doing hockey, though it's not a primary focus, there are few that focus on baseball (we've done two of them this year) , they've done figure skating, they've done football, they've done  motocross?  Well there's a  Peanuts special about the characters doing Motocross  and that's our lookback this time.   "You're A Good Sport, Charlie Brown" first aired on October 28th, 1975 on CBS (Charlie Brown Station)  This special was the third Peanuts special to win an Emmy.  (This explains why it's on the Peanuts Emmy Honored collection DVD) So  let's see what made Charlie Brown a good sport.

But first, tennis.  The special starts with Snoopy doing some tennis practice ,meaning another sport featured in Peanuts media has been achieved.  Snoopy ends up getting pelted and bonked on the head with tennis balls and this leads to the title card.   Linus and Sally are going to play tennis too that is until they go to the courts and see it's all filled up.  This enrages Linus  and he goes off on saying that "big kids" are always taking up the court and that he hates them. (woah calm down there , Linus)  Sally threatens the big kids to get off the court her boyfriend will beat them up, Linus runs away.  Apparently. Snoopy found a spot to play though.   In fact, Snoopy and his tennis match take up some time in this special.    Now, Peppermint Patty comes over with a motocross bike and she meets Sally and also wants to talk about a great event. They are doing a motocross race and she would love it if Snoopy would compete.

Peppermint Patty, the biker/ Copyright Peanuts

Up next, Charlie Brown is practicing football  with Linus and the drop kick, Lucy suggests they should do place kicks, and Charlie Brown starts yelling at her but, Peppermint Patty shows up on her bike to tell them the ways of motocross (ah hail motocross).  Linus suggests that Charlie Brown should get a motor bike and  compete and Linus would be the pit crew.  Charlie Brown laments that he doesn't have money  for a motor bike and gets real sarcastic with Linus.  (This special has feisty , Charlie Brown)   He does fall for Lucy's football trick though.

Where do we bury the gold? /Copyright Peanuts

Time for Charlie Brown to get a dirt bike.  With a lucky number 13 on it.  Peppermint Patty think she's gonna to win first place.  Snoopy is also going to be competing as the Masked Marvel, because of course. Marcie is going to be interviewing people for the race. (She's on TV?)  Oh the race is starting!
Race/ Copyright Peanuts

Charlie Brown and the Masked Marvel have wiped out and  Charlie Brown gets brought to a pet hospital and Snoopy gets brought to a people hospital.   Charlie Brown gets back to the race and Linus decides to kill a pumpkin and make into a helmet for Charlie Brown. (Alright then)   Masked Marvel takes the lead  , but wait number 7  Peppermint Patty retakes the lead.  Charlie Brown's pit crew is very strange.  3 contestants remain, (I guess the others died)  Charlie Brown, P.P and M.M. Masked jumps the mud , Peppermint gets stuck and Charlie drives through it.  Masked in 1st, Charlie in 2nd.  Masked's bike needs a little tune up I think, Jim. That's Right, Steve.
Uhh Snoopy / Copyright Peanuts

Snoopy then uses the  tennis ball machine from earlier as a replacement. (can he do that, Jim?) Which also uses to shoot balls at Chuck because there are no rules.   Snoopy thinks he's so far ahead that he decides to have picnic.  Charlie Brown keeps on going and he takes first! (Dumb move by  the Marvel, Steve)  Then Snoopy gets stuck in some mud as Charlie Brown's run down bike does it's best.   Charlie Brown  wins the race! Charlie Brown wins the race!  He won something. Charlie Brown gets a kiss from the Motocross queen , Loretta.  He also wins 5 free hair cuts.  Which he laments at because his father is a barber. (They couldn't get Pro-Bowl tickets, insert pro bowl joke here)
Nice to see some smiles from CB / Copyright Peanuts

Charlie Brown has some confidence  and decides to try some baseball but, once again his clothes fall off and the special ends with him sitting there all sad.

We are almost done with the 70's in our Peanuts specials journey. (woah)

More after the jump.

The Lookback :The Pumpkin Who Couldn't Smile

The Flashback  Halloween

As we wrap up our series of Halloween themed posts guess it's time to take a look at a special that turns 40 next year.   It's our first look at a special with  "Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy".  It first aired on October 31st 1979 on the CBS television Network.   The full name of the special is called "Raggedy Ann and Andy in the Pumpkin Who Couldn't Smile".  So let's  take a look at why this pumpkin can't smile.

There's a pumpkin who is sad and crying that he wasn't picked up to be used on Halloween. (For 25 Cents!, Darn people I would have bought that) Then it cuts over to a house where  Raggedy Ann and Andy (voiced by June Foray and Daws Butler)  are kind of sad about how someone could be mean. They are talking about a sad blond boy named , Ralph  who lives with an unhappy aunt (also voiced by Foray) named Agatha.  She scares away some trick or treaters. (You can say she doesn't like Halloween)  Ann thinks that maybe the aunt really isn't mean and that maybe doesn't know what it's like to be a kid.  Her real mission is to get a pumpkin for Ralph. ( I wonder which pumpkin they will get)
Who wouldn't want that face?

The pumpkin's complaining continues. Even the mouse that he was with gets fed up and leaves. Ann, Andy, and their dog , Arthur, go out with a skateboard to get a pumpkin.  They meet up with the pumpkin who couldn't smile (and whines alot) and Ann tells him that they have  a boy for him. To, which he is happy to hear.  When they get him on the skateboard it rolls away from Andy and the rest and they have to chase it.  Eventually, the chase ends and it's time for them to bring the pumpkin up to Ralph's window.   Ralph is not surprised to see a pumpkin  rapping at his window randomly he seems more overjoyed.   He grabs the pumpkin.
Is this real life , or is this fantasy?

Ann and Andy decide to focus on Aunt Agatha and help her remember what she can like about Halloween.  So they make her remember a time from when she was nine years old.  This causes her to wake up  with a softer side. She now likes Halloween and Ralph gets to go trick or treating.  Aunt Aggie joins too.
My mind is being controlled by dolls

My writing about the action in the special that takes place is sparse because there's not much action except the long chase or the comedy that happens.  The animation in this special is great, because Chuck Jones. It has style all over it and great for it.
Together forever!

The special is good as well. I am glad it didn't focus too much on the pumpkin's moaning. The special's message is to me one that says Halloween is a fun holiday and  has things that many can enjoy. That we shouldn't forget the fun of it. Which, is an interesting message but not a bad one.  It's a fine special for a family to enjoy.  That's our look back , tune  in next time after these talking dolls at my door tell me about the fun of  Easter. (month early)

The Flashback : Why Yes, There is a Second Scary Godmother Movie

The Flashback  Halloween

The first "Scary Godmother" special did so well that they made a second one.  This one is called "Scary Godmother: Jimmy's Revenge" (This time he's ummm un happy) It's the same length as it's predecessor and premiered in 2005  (at least, on Cartoon Network USA).  Let's see why Jimmy has to take some revenge.

The special starts with credits of the names of the characters which apparently is being done by the werewolf from last time named  Harry, (Get it?)  is apparently doing a television broadcast.  Scary GodMother brings up something from the last movie where he  has to work for her to pay off for Halloween the last year.  So, she tells him to get busy.  Harry decides to tell a story and has cameras that zoom into Jimmy's room  (well, I am out) who is very scared from the last Halloween.  He has nightmares about the monsters coming back. (meaning, good work monsters from last year)
a broken boy

The same friends from the last special show up.  He even monster-proofed his room. The others didn't think they met real monsters (or Ahh Real Monsters!) just teenagers in costumes who taught them a lesson after being mean to Hannah. Jimmy's friends have apparently come to be friends with Hannah. (yay?)  They announce their plans for Halloween to which Jimmy protests and says that he is boycotting Halloween. So the friends leave.    Hannah was decorating her room for Halloween when Bug a Boo shows up. (under her bed)
Under the bed walk

Remember that key from last time? Hannah uses it to visit Scary where she "Sabrina the Teenage Witch's" the closet to the other side.  Scary is prepping for Halloween. Meanwhile, Jimmy hates Halloween.   Hannah calls Jimmy to tell him that they are getting pumpkins, tomorrow to which he protests then gets an idea. Then we rip off the Grinch and we get the scariest face ever with this animation.
aaaaaaaaaaahhhhh

Remember the vampires from last year? They return mostly to ask Scary if she has anything she needs.  Jimmy decides to smash pumpkins to which he created a band called Smashing Pumpkins then he got sued. (everything after Jimmy smashing pumpkins in the sentence is untrue.)   The next day, the other kids see the pumpkins smashed and Halloween is  now ruined.  The pumpkin on Scary's calendar has shrunk meaning  something bad is happening. (Also, there's only one pumpkin patch in the whole world)  Hannah thinks of an idea to used the destroyed pumpkins  and this makes Halloween spirit grow again.   Jimmy decides instead to get rid of costumes and candy.  (Jimmy's unseen parents are best characters in this thing)  He goes to to the stores and messes up the merchandise. (This time he did multiple stores)  Halloween is ruined again. Scary's house dissolves and so does the world around her.( I guess she depends on one town to exist.) Scary sends a message to have Hannah help fix it.  Hannah thinks up making the treats.  In the last movie Scary did a little treat making segment now it's Hannah's turn. She shows how to make s'mores.
Umm that's more terrifying

Hannah has a PHD, because she thinks of making costumes like they did last year. Jimmy hears about the party and I guess this means he's going to destroy that as well. Scary God Mother got squished under her own house. (special over)  Oh she's not dead. (That would have been dark ) Jimmy decides to TP the old house where the party is going be taking place.  Because Katie says Halloween is ruined again and October 31st disappears from the calendar.  (Why does this set of kids or town have all the power to get rid of Halloween )  Then one again, Hannah saves the day. The toilet paper makes great decoration. Hannah and friends are wearing the same things as last movie because gotta cut costs somewhere.  Hannah decides to take the  others to Scary's place.
Uhhh yes....

Jimmy decides to come in and  ruin the prize because he's still on this revenge kick. He takes the price during the dance montage because yes but, the dance montage gets in locked up in a coffin under the prize pumpkin. Some sweet moments  happen like Hannah helping the vampire kid , Orson, not have to wear something he doesn't want to wear. Jimmy wins  best costume.  Halloween goes well and Jimmy likes Halloween again.

If I have to pick between the two I'd say that this one was the better special.  It was funnier and also did better use of its 47 minutes.  The animation still is kind of strange and the stranger faces didn't help.  The story was alright as well, if not a little silly  when you over think it but  it fits the logic of the story not the logic we have  in our world. It was pretty nice to have a sequel to see the characters we first met  how they are a year later.   So again, this a good special for younger kids and a family to watch.
