A Brief Moment In to the Twilight: Ye Gods

The Flashback

Previously, we looked at a 1985 "Twilight Zone" episode "If she Dies" since the 1985 series episodes have segments, that means we have the other segment in that episode to cover.  This is from episode 5,the other segment  "Ye Gods" this episode is from October 25,1985.
Not love at First Sight/ Copyright ViacomCBS

Our main character is named Todd Ettinger (played by actor David Dukes) and he bumps into a woman and apparently  thinks that these two should be a couple and sprinkles magic love dust on them. (The eighties dust?)   They awkwardly share an exchange  but they don't start just making out and cupid follows him and wonders why they didn't fall in love. He's mad at yuppies. Cupid meets with Todd and wants to know why he doesn't fall in love.  At first, Todd doesn't think this man is cupid but he proves that he his at least magic by melting his phone. (that's a mess)
No, I guess I don't want to change long distance carriers/ Copyright ViacomCBS

Cupid gets mad and shoots three love arrows into Todd and walks away. Todd sees the woman again and starts to give chase to her (that's how love works in the 80's ) but he can't get to her.  Todd wants to talk to her.  Todd talks to his co worker that he feels hollow even with all the nice stuff he has, he wants love. (those arrows have side effects)

Todd can't sleep because he keeps having sexy 80's music dreams about her.  So he decides the next day to find  Bacchus, the god of wine making, because Cupid mentioned him earlier. Thankfully, he finds the god in the phone book.  (You can't do that on Bing)  He finds Bacchus and Cupid at a fancy dinner party.  He finds out that Cupid is depressed because he and a fury named Megaera (because we going Greek here) had split up and decides to help Cupid get back with her.
I'm the god of business and wine/ Copyright ViacomCBS

Todd the logical thing of using an incantation to get Megaera to show up. (She's not in the phone book, apparently)  She does (played by Carolyn Seymour)  and she seems angry. Anyway she's mad because she thinks Cupid wants to be with mortals (in the loving way). She was angry enough to turn the woman she thought Cupid wanted into a tree frog.   Anyway, Todd plays fix it by calling Bacchus to help him get Cupid and Megaera together to talk it out. (Inviting two gods into his office might be a bad idea)
We're going to tear this office down/ Copyright Viacom CBS

Cupid and Megaera after some yelling seem to make up (The little heart effect graphic helps)   and they stare into each other eyes for a long time then a long kiss.  After leaving them alone for awhile, he finds out they left out the window with the window washers.  Todd is annoyed  that he still has unrequited love.  Todd decides to do some comfort shopping and gets rear ended  and finds out that woman was the lady he met before and the sexy 80's music is back and loving happens.  The episode ends with these two kissing in the middle of the street.
Here on Chopper5 we are showing you this couple kissing in the road, expect delays/ Copyright ViacomCBS

It's a pretty quirky and weird episode, but I do like how the main character kind of learned the point Cupid was giving him that he should try to maybe focus on things more than just his working life and fancy stuff that's a nice little touch.  The idea to have the Greek gods be modernized was pretty interesting, this segment had some charm to it and it was pretty entertaining for what it was.

That does it for now, tune in next time, when we try match making two strangers only to find out  that we shouldn't use arrows.

The Lookback: Disney's One Saturday Morning / ABC Kids (Rewrite Edition)

The Flashback  ABC  Children's TV

Another one of our rewrites of a previously done post, continues with us looking at Disney's One Saturday Morning and ABC Kids once again. You can read our original post here.     So let's see if we can improve upon that one  and see what happens.

Disney's One Saturday Morning in sense starts the final trend of Saturday morning network kids programming.  This is also an example of how media was changing and ownerships were part of that.  On July 31, 1995, The Walt Disney Company announced it wanted to buy Capital Cities/ABC. (In hindsight, this may have been a bad idea)   Thus this eventually allowed in early 1996. I'm going to keep this to the block's relvantacy, or we'd be here all day. (Yes, thankyou)  Disney's children's tv focus was  The Disney Afternoon, but that block was dying. It had everything going against it in 1995, that would now both the WB and UPN having a kids block in the afternoon. These were stations that used to air the Disney afternoon; Fox Kids was also running.  It was dying, first the name then later the whole block. Meanwhile, Disney was also offering its programming on ABC and CBS already, along with The Disney Chanel, which comes into our story soon.

1996 was the setting year, like Disney bought ABC and was trying to figure out things. The Fall 1996 line up on ABC Sat AM was including some Disney made stuff, already. They had plans in the works. Enter, Peter Hastings, he had left Warner Bros and came to Disney and one of the things to bring in was  a new concept of a Saturday Morning block.

“Disney and ABC had been looking for a way to frame Saturday morning to make it look different and set it apart from programming on other networks,” explains Hastings. “I thought of basing the show on the concept that Saturday mornings were different from the rest of the week, with each day represented by a special building...

One Shot Posts: Rugrats: Chuckie Loses His Glasses

Rugrats Nickelodeon One Shot Posts

So, Rugrats, as of this writing, is returning with a new remade series that's done in 3D animation because reasons and coming to the streaming service number 9,425 or Paramount Plus (formerly known as CBS All Access) ." Rugrats" is my favorite Nickelodeon animated series of all time, and I thought this would be a good time do a One Shot Post about an episode.

So today, we are looking at Season 2 Episode 16a: "Chuckie Loses His Glasses"/

Since the first thing you notice about Chuckie is wild red hair... oh ok the second thing you notice about Chuckie is that he wears a glasses. (Fun fact: Chuckie is my favorite Rugrat) This episode revolves around the idea of  "What if Chuckie cant' see?" (What?)  The episode  sets up stuff that a) it's raining and b) Chuckie is worried that Angelia might be mad at him for eating two of her crayons. (eww) They get the parents out of the way because we need this plot to plot. (yeah!)

Since it's raining (no government today, because it's raining) they have to be trapped inside, so they need a game to do and Angelica decides to do hide-n-seek (or hide and go seek). Angelica being Angelica and she likes to pick on Chuckie so she decides to make Chuckie "it" because she's mad. Also Angelica tells Chuckie to take off his eyes. (what?)  Good thing she means the glasses (his extras eyes or this would be a dark episode)  Angelica uses the moment of him counting to take his glasses.  So apparently, thanks to Chuckie's vision being not good, he sees strange shapes and thinks they are monsters and junk. The episode's music and visuals are on great display as always. The friends think Chuckie is just trying to get them to stop hiding by faking he's needing help. (Uhh, guys I'm being mauled by a bear! Help !  Nice Try!)

If this is how Chuckie sees the world without his glasses, he's more scared than he is when he can see clearly. (Now the rain is gone)  Chuckies maunders the house and finally gets Spike to be his seeing eye dog.( I wish we could ride dogs)  He wants Spike to find Tommy for him, inspeaking of Tommy, he thinks Chuckie is in trouble.  Meanwhile, Angelica  continues her chaos reign.  He puts Chuckie's glasses on and gets dizzy then tells everyone that Chuckie is dead. (what?)  She literally says dead , that's not one of my jokes.

Back to her being dizzy,  Tommy says they need to keep looking, and now Tommy has the glasses. Chuckie and Spike are outside because that's where Spike too him, because he's a dog and doing dog things.  Tommy gets the idea to "wear Chuckie's eyes) and he thinks that's how Chuckie sees the world (top joke, this episode) Poor Chuckie gives up and just swings in the rain.   I like the parallel of Tommy finding a bag of vegetables and thinking they are Chuckie  and Chuckie thinking a bush is his friends.

Chuckie steps on glasses that are outside, thinks that they are his and starts to cry, thankfully Tommy hears him and finds him.  Chuckie can see again (it's  a miracle!)  Now that's fine, Angelica was feeling bad from the glasses and throws up on her dad's sweater.  Also the glasses that were broken were Grandpa Lou's. It ends with the young mocking the old.

Pretty fun episode, good jokes and humor, shows the show's strength of great visuals to make the world look distorted to Chuckie, Angelica, and Tommy's vision.   Episode is pretty fun to watch, I love its atmosphere and set up to get things going. This is a  premium Rugrats episode.

Anyway, that's it for now, tune in next time, when we take someone's eyes. (wait noooo)

[POST SCRIPT :  If  you are reading this in May of 2021, the remake series comes out on May 27th on Paramount Plus, I'm not too sure if I'm going to like it, the animation style kind of throws me off, I may or may not write about something from it.  You can watch the original series currently on Hulu and Paramount Plus ]

Fall TV 2021: The CW

The CW TvLookFall2021  Upfronts

The CW has released their fall schedule. A big thing to note is that this year they are expanding  into Saturday Night, in exchange the are giving that hour of daytime (a relic from the old KIDS WB days) to their affiliates.  It's predecessor networks the WB (whom the original schedule of the network was based from)  and UPN left Saturday nights to it's affiliates. This is curious since Saturday is usually a "dead" night on network TV.

The network is making moves for it's shows as well.  "Riverdale" is moving from it's long time Wednesday night slot.  Sunday will not have scripted shows instead they 'll have"Legends of hte Hidden Temple" (yes you read that right)  and "Killer Camp".    The fall line is filled mostly with familiarity.  There will only be one new scripted series that's a remake of "4400".

In midseason,  "All American: Homecoming"  and "Naomi" are the new series making their premieres.   Midseason will also have the returns of "Charmed" , "DC's Stargirl" , "Dynasty" , "In the Dark" , "Kung Fu" , "Roswell, New Mexico" , "Superman and Lois".
