On this day in 1983 in television history , Disney's network came on the air Disney Channel or at the time called The Disney Channel , the "the" was removed in 1997.

When Disney Channel launched it was premium channel like HBO, it ran about 18 hours day From 7AM-1AMET. Meaning they would say good night at 1AMET as seen in the video below:

Early programming included programs like : "Welcome to Pooh Center". They also aired classic Disney shorts, movies including premire movies, as well as nature ,and other learning programs. The channel had a foucs on kids and their parents.

Later on the 80's Disney Channel expanded to a full 24 hour programming line up. They launched a program called "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" in 1988 which wasn't popular but became the launching pad for "Saved by The Bell" which has high cult fame.

It later added a revival of "The Micky Mouse Club" later started growing in viewers and subscribers by the 1990's . In 1997 ,changes started coming as mentioned before the name was changed from "The Disney Channel"to "Disney Channel" , and it made a move to basic cable.

They also started adding in breaks between shows , we say breaks since in essence they weren't advisement they were mostly promotions for other Disney Channel shows or other Disney properties this still continues to this day. They also started an increased amount of original programming , while still airing syndicated shows.

Disney Channel in the 1997-2000 period launched a preschool block to compete with Nickeloden's Nick Jr. "Playhouse Disney" was a block that ran usually in the mornings on Disney Channel from 1997-2011 , when it was renamed the less creative "Disney Junior" .

They also launched a new sister channel on it's Birthday in 1998 called Toon Disney which aired toons from Disney's library including "Disney's One Saturday Morning" "Disney's One too on UPN" .
Later on Disney Channel also added shows like :
"The Jersey (1999-2001)
"Even Stevens" (2000-2003)

Even though Disney was and is known for animated series , Disney Channel , in fact aired many of them including the newer animation episodes from the "One Saturday Morning" block , never really had any animated series of it's own.

They also had a block at this time called "Zoog Disney" which had "animated robot hosts. I remember this very vividly.

In 2002, Disney Channel modified it's look with a new look and schedule , with the classic "Vault Disney" block removed, the "zoogs" were also down played. Dramas and game shows were no longer made , focusing mostly on scripted comedies and movies. No more outside shows were acquired, by 2007 the line up was mostly original programming.

Since we didn't write the story of Disney Channel it wrote it's self many viewers have said the said the channel has changed from it's start which is true. Some say for the worst , especially how the programs have changed in style. But here on the Flashback we end here.
