The Lookback: Children's TV : The Disney Afternoon

The Flashback  Children's TV

So  we have told you about Disney's One Saturday Morning and Disney's One too , before Disney owned a broadcast network they   had to find other ways to air their content.  Now-a-days it's  Disney Channel , Disney XD, Disney Junior , and sometimes ABC.  Before then there was  Disney Channel , but it was premium. (Like HBO , though as one channel ,not a bunch ). So they had NBC,CBS,ABC and independent stations air their programs.    Now to FOX , we told in you in our FOX Kids piece that , Fox owned stations (some not owned) aired  some disney shows including "Duck Tales" and "Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers" that Disney syndicated to stations.  So after FOX and Disney got mad at each other  and FOX decided  to launch FOX Kids , many of the fox affiliates that aired the syndicated shows  still aired them or they were moved to other stations.  (usually independent stations )

coming in 4 weeks?! I'm there.  youtube/ Disney

Now on September 10th , 1990 (2 days after Fox Kids started)  The Disney Afternoon started. It was a syndicated block of about 2 hours airing programs made by Disney usually in the afternoon slots the stations would air kids TV shows anyway.

What did these two hours entail ?  (Yeah what did they entail?)  Well cartoons from Disney , a mixture of some from Disney airing on other networks , and new ones for the block.
"Disney's Adventures  of the Gummi Bears" was the first series on the block . (This is the program that ran on NBC and ABC first) ,so why not start your new programming block with it?   "Ducktales" was the first Disney cartoon to air in syndication it originally ran on FOX and independent stations in the country  it was added to the block as repeats.  "Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers" also started in syndication was added as part of the syndicated block   as repeats.   And Disney added  "Talespin".
Each year a new show was added in the last half hour and the "oldest show" was at the first half-hour and the next season each show moved up one half-hour and the first half-hour show from the previous season was removed.  In the 2nd year the new program was "Darkwing Duck" , it also aired on ABC (two for one) .  This cartoon was a cartoon super-hero show with Ducks.

........ oh what expecting a comment? , no comment here just enjoy  Disney/Youtube
The 3rd year (some call it 1992)  "Duck Tales" was removed (it was the first hour show the last season , so it be eliminated )  and a new series came in called "Goof Troop". "Goof Troop" was a cartoon about Goofy and his 11 -year -old son ,  Max. (Goofy had a son?)  It also aired on ABC and The Disney Channel . (not ooh Disney Channel had a fancy phase of the )  In the 4th year ( uhhhh 1993) , "Chip n' Dale" were removed and a new series "Bonkers" came in.  It was a spin-off , of "Raw Toonage". (It aired on CBS so that's why didn't mention it here, also Bonkers didn't air on ABC which is shocking )   In the 5th year  ,"Talespin" was removed and the new series was "Aladdin". It was based of the popular movie that came out two years before (called Aladdin, as well ) ,  It takes  place after the movie. "Aladdin" also aired on CBS (hey! That's not ABC)

Everything in the early 90's sounded like this...don't judge them    youtube/disney

Also in the 5th year , another program was added  (the 3rd 1/2 hour was now 3 programs depending on the day) "Gargoyles" was also introduced the first two seasons ran on  Disney Afternoon and the final on ABC. (There we are)   It was more dramatic and less comedy  like the other programs.  It's about Gargoyles who are mystical creatures , trying to adjust to Newyork and the 20th century.
In the 6th year , "Timon and Pumba" was the new series added, it was based off the two charcters from the highly popular "Lion King" movie , that came out just 2 years before.  It also aired on CBS (This is 1995,so you know what 1996 means).  This program also out lived the block by two years... kind of.  (more on that in a second)
In the 7th year, "Quack Pack" and  "Mighty Ducks" were added. (Good year for Duck theme).  It's 1996 , this is also where the block dies ( awww)  on August 29, 1997. What was coming in 1997? (oooh pick me pick me). Yep The new block "Disney's One Saturday Morning" on ABC. The block died but it didn't. (well I am lost)  On September 1 it was renamed ____________ (in other words it had no name) and it was shortened to 90 minutes. It aired mostly repeats of shows from the Disney's One Sat block at this point. In 1999 it was officially ended. Another reason for it's end was also the stations , if they were now WB affiliates they would be airing Kids WB  in the afternoon ,so no need for the syndicated block , and others were UPN and same reason (with UPN kids).
Disney didn't give up on afternoons they launched "Disney's One too" which you have already read about , (we hope , for our moral)  If not it's here .    The repeats of the programs and large amount of cartoons Disney was making , they launched Toon Disney , as a spin off of the now Basic cable Disney Channel (The "the" was removed)  and all the programs aired there for awhile.  Toon Disney closed in 2009.

So that's it ..thanks for reading .(How else would you end it?)
