The Lookback
We did part one this is part 2 , We are taking another look at some CBS Saturday Morning programs ; unlike the first one where most of the shows featured were from the 1980's (except one , oh that's why you said most) These shows are mostly from the 1970's and also mostly from Hanna and Barbera (The kings of Children's TV apparently).
1. The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show
The Flintstones , were a prime time show on ABC , but when it was canceled it was still popular and repeated on Saturday Mornings on the networks. (Plus it was cheaper than making a new show for the kids to watch) . It ran on CBS (well you didn't read the title did you?) from September 11th , 1971 to September 2nd 1972.
It takes us to the future where Fred and Wilma's Daughter Pebbles and Barney and Betty's son Bamm-Bamm are now teenagers. (Factor in that the original series ended in 1965, they were still around 2 or 3 , that means that we skipped a lot of time, also it's a cartoon) They were also sweethearts. (awww , Bamm-Bamm) The show took place with our main characters at high-school (where Teenagers seem to be ) in Bedrock . They had friends : MoonRock (space-age!) , Penny (what no rock name?) , and Wiggy. Also Cindy (not Brady, maybe), Pebbles' rival, and her boyfriend Fabian (again did the rock puns die in this series?). There was also a motorcycle gang in the series ( well.. you, know what you are on your own on this) .
Thanks and Hanna and Babera
Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm were seen in later Flintstones Movies and TV shows ,except (definitely) "Flintstones Kids".
Fun fact: The Actor Jay North (From the Live-action , Dennis the Meance , voiced Bamm-Bamm)
2. The Flintstone Comedy Hour
So , the Flintstones were a thing again , in 1972 (wait 1972?) It was an hour long show (again titles) it ran from September 9th 1972- September 1st ,1973, The show had two halves , the first had featured Fred and Barney shorts, A short with Pebbles and Bamm-bamm and music from the BedRock , "The Bedrock Rockers". (Yay , I have all their records) Meanwhile , the 2nd half hour was a new episode of "The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show".
There series ended in 1973 ,and CBS repackaged the show as The Flintstone Comedy Show (not an hour anymore) , which also how it aired in Syndication in repeats.
I like how Fred Never ages / Copyright H&B
Fact: It was the final series to Alan Reed as the voice of Fred , due to his death 1977.
More after the jump but first this commercial
3,4,5,6 The Skatebirds
This was a content wrap series by Hanna and Babera for CBS in 1977 and ran half a season .(didn't do well did it?) It had four live action segments featuring the Skatebirds (people in bird costumes ) . It also had four segments which we will look at.
4. The Robonic Stooges
One of the segments of the Skate Birds was this it featured the 3 Stooges , though not the real ones they had died before the series started. In this series they were bionic superheros who fight crime (compared to ones who cut taxes) and given assignments by their boss Agent 000 (easy number) .
When Skate Birds ended , it was given it's own half hour for 16 episodes.
Also Robonic is not a word / H&B
5. Wonder Wheels
A Five minute cartoon as part of "The Skate Birds" it was about Young journalist (voiced by a Monkee , Micky Dolenz and his girlfriend solve crimes with his super hero motorcycle ,Wonder Wheels (ahhh titles). That's pretty much it on that one.
We couldn't find the intro /
6. Mystery Island
This one was not a cartoon ,instead it was a live action show, it was about 3 people and their robot , P.O.P.S , they were stranded on Island because of an evil mad scientist named Dr.Strange crashed their plane (Mrs. Strange was proud mother when her son became a doctor). He wanted their robot. ( you know if he was doctor couldn't he make his own)
Interesting /H&B
7. Clue Club / Woofer & Wimper, Dog Detectives
4 Kids and a dog who solve mysteries ... that was what Clue Club was (is it wrong to copy yourself , wrong is it to copy yourself?) . Hanna and Babera made this series for CBS, as another show they made about 4 kid and a dog who solved mysteries , Scooby Doo, was moving ABC (The Alphabet Soup network ) It ran from 1976-1977.
Our main characters were Larry (19), Pepper (18), D.D. (16) and Dotty (13) ,and they had two talking dogs Woofer and Wimper (Take that Scooby) , though only we the audience and each other could understand them, the humans on the show couldn't. The police and them apparently had an arrangement where they were often called to help in case. (Cheaper?)
What about that other name ? Clipped down episodes where put in the "SkateBirds" with the two dogs as main focus.
Snazzy / H&B
8. Josie and the Pussy Cats (Theme song stuck in my head)
This is a famous one , based of the Archie Comic created by Dan DeCarlo and produced by Hanna and Barbera. It aired on CBS with new episodes from 1970-71 garnering 16 episodes. It was about an all-girl group that traveled the world (boring) and how they fell into adventures (interesting now) That involved some evil person or something (there were alot of odd people in their universe, who also always wants to take over the world ).
It came on thanks the popularity of the Archie Show , our friends at H&B wanted some of the success that Filmation was having so they asked Archie Comics if they could adapt their "Josie" comic. They added characters and removed them
They didn't just want cartoon success they wanted music success, so they made a real-life Josie and Pussy-Cats group ,who make the singing voices in the cartoon and also albums. (H&B eyes were dollar signs)
Wait ....there's more (we weren't going anywhere)
Josie and The Pussycats in Outer Space! It was a 1972 spin-off that also are on CBS (The C..can't make a joke with their name ... lost mind track) . So now our main characters were in space (outer) they would enter a different world each episode and most likely get kidnapped. They had original new music in this series (which is nice) and Melony had a new pet named Bleep (what... such language) It also ran 16 Episodes and CBS canceled in 1972 a few months after it started.
Now it's stuck in your head... /Copyright H&B
inter space / H&B
And that's our look at CBS Saturday Morning TV (part 2 ) and in 1970's , That's our lookback. Stay tuned next time for Scooby-Doo in Space !!! (nevermind )
