The Peanuts Film Festival : The Peanuts Movie (Part 1)

Peanuts

The Peanuts started as a comic strip in 1950 and ran until 2000 meaning it ran 50 years , 50 years amassed with a legacy and people growing up with it, passing it on, and then it was passed on again to the next until its apart of our world like Shakespeare. (Maybe we are stretching it, maybe not.)  The one thing the Peanuts has amassed is nostalgia that connects people to the characters and stories it told.  The Christmas special has run since 1965 non stop only switching networks once.

After the comics stopped and Schulz's death there was still more Peanuts media made.  From new Christmas specials, new Valentine's Day special, to a few random non specific specials.  There is 50 years of comics to pull stuff from and make it work. The biggest thing would be a movie.   Now we have had these movies that took something nostalgic and put together that did well but maybe aren't received well so hearing the idea of  a Peanuts movie seems to be something to fear.  But it was done with loving hands by the family of Charles Schulz meaning we didn't get a  movie that would be somewhat a disappointment at best, or  worst, terrifying.

The point for all this is our talk about the 2015 movie , "The Peanuts Movie".   I am breaking this up into 2 parts because it gives us a little more room to breathe.

   First the animation.
This isn't a long winded talk about every part of the animation in the movie, this is to talk about  Peanuts and animation.    The comics were hand drawn by hand for the entirety so it has that style plus Schulz drawing style.  In 1965, the comics were translated into their first animation special (not their first animated appearance though)  and when you see the specials like " A Charlie Brown Christmas" you see  they have a style to them.  As animation changed it kind of where it followed the new techniques but didn't change the characteristics.    "It was my Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown" used parts of digital ink. Other specials used that tech after that.   They didn't go for a traditional 2D hand drawn or flash made movie, they also knew not to use 3D CGI that many animated movies use now.

The animation style is CGI and does give a hint of the 3rd dimension but it still feels like the comics.   I will pick up they went with the more classic designs meaning that characters like , Lucy, are back in dresses when they started wearing pants in the 1980's.    The animation was seemly carefully thought out as a way to make sure that it didn't make Peanuts fans go ugh in disgust and condemn the movie  or something. Personal line:   I do think it would have been nice to have a traditional style of animation movie  but,  they did a nice compromise.

I'll talk about the music later.

Let's talk about the movie ,(there are spoilers ahead ) and again I am breaking this up into __ parts so we aren't going to be doing it all in this post.

One Shot Posts: Girls Last Tour Episode 5

One Shot Posts   Anime

Some things don't fit into anywhere else  on this blog or we don't have enough to talk about a whole series or whatever. This is One Shot Posts were we can talk about an episode of something random , aspects of a show even a random detail we notice, or something like that. Or just a chance to be off the cuff and try something new.

We look at an anime called "Girls' Last Tour" it came out in 2017 and boiled down to three sentences.  It's a show takes place during an apparently  post-apocalyptic world where most of the people are gone. Instead of show about our main characters trying to fight off monsters, zombies, or other people because the world ended, they have are focused on getting around and finding food and surviving.   Yuuri and Chito are the main (only) characters of all the episodes, sometimes they run into other people but mostly it's just them.

I decided to talk about episode 5 because it  looks at things we kind of take for granted. Episodes in this series are divided into 2 or 3 segments  that may or may not connect.  In this episode we have three : "House" , "Nap", and 'Sound of Rain.

In House  Yuuri and Chito are traveling  past some houses where people used to live but don't now.  In this series if you choose to watch the whole thing, the two girls don't know a lot about things we know because they've not experienced them or have a remembrance of them , themselves. So  Yuuri or Yuu (the blonde girl ) wonders what houses were used for and Chito or Chi (pronounced chee) (the dark haired girl) explains that people couldn't live without a house. They find a room and enter it.   Chi remarks that it's nice to have an actual room and four walls surrounding you.  Then they imagine stuff in the room like a bunk bed, bookshelf, a pantry, and more until the room looks very nice.

It gives a beautiful feeling of warmth and happiness  that many do experience at home the room they imagine isn't too grand or nothing too out of place but it is something they don't have.  Most people don't think about this because of what we have now , that see these sort of things all the time in our own homes with tables, chairs, beds, and etc.  Sadly, the images were just in their heads and the room returns to its more bairn state.  The next day they get back on their Kattenrad and travel on.   Yuu remakes that road is their house  and she imagines a roof on the Kattenrad but Chi, kills this.

Does make one thing about our characters as Chi remarked about how they can't stay there anyway because they'd run out of food, that the whole focus for them is their survival. They have to move on  even if they didn't want to.
In Nap   it gets surreal.  Since Yuu and Chi have had a long night they end up taking a nap. Chito has some strange dream, One where Yuu grows huge but still herself and makes her fall into the water because why not?  Then she imagines Yuuri as a giant fish who wants to eat her. She wakes up from that strangeness before she gets eaten.  She looks at Yuu dreaming of eating food because she really likes food and Chi stuffs a rock in Yuu's mouth.   Not much to opine on in the segment but it was fun and surreal.

In Sound of Rain   I love how the show looks in general great imagery and sound usage  this segment uses that to the fullest. It's raining and the duo take cover to let the storm pass.  Yuu finds a metal stick and decides to hit it against a beam to hear its sound.  Yuu takes collects some water and hears the sound of the dripping on the floor and decides to see what happens when it hits her helmet. They take some other objects and position it around dripping spots. They enjoy the sounds it makes.  Chito says this is maybe what is called music, Yuu wonders what music is.    The credits play with the music made and some singing to give it a nice effect.  It comes back to them when the rain stops which also ends the music.

The simplicity of the rain even it can make something grand like music. It was calm relaxing segment that kind of just takes a breath and shows the simplicity of what's around us.

I picked this episode to show how well even something simple can be a fun and well done story and how a show can get to feel into its emotions very well.  I say give the whole series a chance if you haven't seen it already.. You can stream in the US on Amazon Prime streaming.

We look at Stitch.

Anime  Lilo and Stitch

Flashing back to my Powerpuff Girls Z  lookback , I ended it with this line

That's our lookback and tune  in next time when we find out that Lilo has left Stitch and now Stitch has  moved on to a different country and a new girl.
I knew what I was doing there, and was actually planning this much sooner than over 2 years later, but better late and well thought out then early and messy.  So the theme of this is related to that Powerpuff Girls Z  in that we are looking a another  American cartoon series being made into an anime.  I did like Powerpuff Girls Z  and think it was  a fun adaptation series , will this be the same?  (Who Knows?)

"Lilo and Stitch" is a popular Disney movie that came and 2002 and it was popular and then spawned sequels and a television series.  So after the final episode and TV movie came out in 2006 , Lilo and Stitch kind of just stopped , but still popular there was nothing more the whole thing, then again that's not a bad thing.  But apparently, there were other plans.

Walt Disney Television  International (so at least, someone didn't just try to make an anime knock off) , TV Tokyo , and Madhouse (For those that aren't anime inclined they are a major studio in the anime business)  all go together to create "Stitch!".  This series ran from 2008 to 2011 with 83 episodes and 3 specials.

Going back to "Powerpuff Girls Z" a second, that series took the American show and aged up the characters, made them not sisters, not related to the professor, and normal girls that happened to get hit with 'z-rays'.  That's a change , now back to my line from the end that started this, "Lilo has left Stitch and has moved to a different country and a new girl.", that's what this anime is in a short amount of words.

In episode 1   this whole series kind of wipes out the whole thing "Lilo and Stitch" was about , family, even as the series showed a weird family like Lilo's with her sister being her parental figure, and also having 3 aliens in the family. That  they are family and always stick together. This episode  obliterates that.    In fact that means the whole series obliterates that. It's not an alternate take of L&S it's like a continuation. Jumba mentions that Stitch is running away because as he says, "...just because little girl,Lilo, has new boyfriend now and is all washed up with 6-2-6 is no reason to act bad. "   So yes Stitch left Lilo because Lilo has a new boyfriend and isn't paying attention to Stitch. (What?)  That's what I got from that part , but  I'll say something else down later on that frames this differently. (so stick with us , please)

Yuna and Stitch / Copyright Disney and Madhouse

Now that new girl part.  There's a girl named Yuna  who lives In Japan or close enough to it  and who is 10 years old (ages up to 11 in one of the seasons) and likes karate.  She's an alright and actually a good character.   So Stitch crashes into her Island part of Japan  and eventually the end up meeting in this episode.  She tries to "arrest" Stitch  then they fall in the water. This series does remember that Stitch can't swim and of course Yuna saves him.  Later there's a thunderstorm and the find a shelter and she's afraid of thunder. Stitch shows once again how sweet he is and comforts her. ( awww)  After the storm , Yuna's grandmother finds them and there's a stone that can grant wishes and Stitch wants to be ruler of the universe. ( Ehhh I wouldn't mind that) The grandmother tells Stitch that he has to prove he is worthy by doing good deeds.  Stitch decides he will stay them and Yuna is going to help  They are also going with the dog cover story thing.  We got a new phrase to replace Ohana  , it's  Ichariba Choodee  as Yuna says it means "Meet ones cousins forever". Also poor Ghantu doesn't get a break , at the end of "Leroy and Stitch" he gets to become part of the Galactic Federation but apparently he gets dishonorably discharged before this series starts and he's back to working for Hamsterveil.

Episode 2: Are Jumba and Pleakly in this series  ?   I am not going to give everything that happens in an episode just to make this easier. But yes Jumba and Pleakly are in this series.  But first, Yuna does start her helping Stitch with his good deeds.  Yuna does stay with her grandma but that's because her father is away she gets a postcard from him and he won't be coming home when he planned because he got a new job.  Jumba and Pleakly are tasked with spying on Stitch to make sure he acts correctly.  As I said before, this series has this it's "arc" like Lilo and Stitch the Series' task was for them to find the other experiments made by Jumba.  Jumba made Stitch a  good deeds counter. (We are getting our 100 deeds for Eddie McDowd mixed up  in our Lilo Yuno and Stitch)  I am watching the dub for reference but Stitch has really upped his English speaking  (or Japanese in the other version) or something.  They didn't get the same voice actor of Stitch to speak in this series for the dub, but he did sound close. (Still minus 5 pts for not getting the original voice)  Jumba and Pleakly decide to stay and make their own guest house to work with Stitch and help him too. (Got most of the old gang back together)  Also, the voices for these characters are different than their movie series counterparts.

Yes they are. / Copyright Disney/ Madhouse

Random line: Yuna's Grandmother doesn't seemed phased by all this E.T stuff
