The Lookback: Kids programs: NBC Saturday Mornings part I

          We  have been writing about specific television Saturday morning blocks , but how about a change?  This time instead of going into a full block we are looking at a network's Saturday morning with a bigger look at certain programs.  The reason for this ?  Well, many networks blocks didn't have major names that would split into talking about a block or  in the case of some blocks we have more about the programs than the block itself.   Let's look at NBC Saturday Mornings  from the 80's  , we are looking at 5 specific programs that were either popular or a surprise to know they existed , or knew about but wanted to forget. (Yep, that should cover all the bases.)

    1. The Smurfs 1981-1989
    "The Smurfs" came to us from Belgium   and they were made a U.S. Saturday Morning TV program with executive producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.  We  don't know what smurfs are exactly , they were always being pestered by some cranky wizard and sometimes other adventures going on. They were a popular hit.  The Program had 272 half-our episodes and had 42% of the Saturday audience (take that Saturday morning infomercials) . The Show ran the whole 80's  , it was canceled after people at NBC messed it up somehow.

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks
    Wait a second, are you doing shows that the movies have used and made bad versions of?
  No comment.
   There was a program in the 60's  called  "The Alvin Show" It introduced us (general , us ) to  the singing chipmunks.  This program was the modern (80's modern rocks!!!) up take of that.  It  ran on NBC from 1983-1990. The Charcters included , the Chipmunks (of course),  Dave Seville ,  but it also introduced the girl chimpunks the chipettes. It was animated by Ruby-Spears .   In the year 1988  it was renamed "The Chipmunks" (Did Alvin quit? Or was the old title too long? ) and DIC became the new animators .  The final season in 90  , it became "The Chipmunks go the movies".  (Why?)  Again a popular show , but you are seeing a common theme to the endings of these shows aren't you?  ( Kind of)

3."I'm Telling"
    This is a show that is a surprise to know existed.
    Well apparently someone thought there needed a be a children's version of the "Newly Wed Game"  (Wait a second, How can...?)  It was a game show (not all Sat AM was cartoons ? well then) with   children who competed on the show were usually brother and sister (usually?)   It was made by  Saban (hey , It's them again)  and Dic (Busy scamps aren't they). It ran for 1 season 1987-1988.
  I could tell you about  the rules  but that would be really long  and un needed.

4. "It's Punky Brewster"
        From the 50's to 90's alot of live-action family shows  were also made into animated shows. (Could you imagine Friends being a cartoon for kids ?, I could )  This one is based off "Punky Brewster" show ,also on NBC. The fun of cartoons unlike live action shows ... you can do anything you want ( yeah!!!)  like using magic with out the need of special effect budgets (and  stunt doubles).  This verison had the same voice actors , if the character from the live-action show.  Like many of the shows that were animated based of live-action shows they added a  magical animal (The Brady Bunch cartoon did it) , a gopher named Glomer, to make story lines happen.
    In one episode Glomer turns Punky into a mermaid (not little , that would be a law suit in waiting ) , another included the classic , character wishes they were never born.  It ran on NBC for two seasons from 1985-86 (re runs longer).

5. Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears
    You would think that  Disney , the kings of animation ( maybe) would just be making  animated TV shows after animated TV shows. Well, that  was not the case, The First Walt  Disney Television Animation animated series was "Adventures of The Gummi Bears" (based of the candy... I think). It premiered on NBC in September of 1985.  The show is about the gummi bear creatures that are unknown to humans, they used to live with humans but now they don't .(Maybe they were tasty? ...sorry)

CBS and Weigel announce a new digital network

       Chicago based Weigel broadcasting , owners of national network METV, co-owners of Movies! and WCIU-TV in Chicago , and CBS corp have announced they are launching  a new digital network for CBS O&O's in 2015.

DECADES will take viewers into a daily time capsule presentation of entertainment, popular culture and news. The service will feature DECADES RETROSPECTICAL^SM, a daily one-hour program that will be produced around the news events and cultural touchstones of a specific day, week or other time frame or theme. The TV series and movies presented each day will reflect that day’s theme or commemorative event.
For example, DECADES will look back at classic series such as HAPPY DAYS and its “jump the shark” episode, explain its historical significance and then broadcast that episode. Viewers will also be taken back in time to rediscover events that shaped our world, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, the Beatles’ U.S. debut on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW and the birth of software and technology companies like Microsoft and Apple. DECADES will connect these events to what people were watching on television, seeing at the movies and experiencing as a nation.
            DECADES is expected to debut during the second quarter of 2015, with the 16 CBS-owned stations that are part of the CBS Television Network serving as the new service’s launch group. This includes the CBS stations serving New York City (WCBS), Los Angeles (KCBS), Chicago (WBBM), Philadelphia (KYW), Dallas (KTVT), San Francisco (KPIX), Boston (WBZ), Detroit (WWJ), Minneapolis-St. Paul (WCCO and its satellite stations KCCO and KCCW), Miami (WFOR), Denver (KCNC), Sacramento (KOVR), Pittsburgh (KDKA) and Baltimore (WJZ).
Weigel will be responsible for securing affiliation agreements with other stations across the country.        

The Lookback : Soaps from the past Part II

The Flashback  Soap Operas 

Since our last post was so , successful we are doing it again , Soap Operas from the past part II.


1  The . Edge Of Night
        The Edge of Night is a memorable soap Opera  , it started on CBS in 1956.  It was supposed to a  daytime version of Perry Mason.  Originally the Mason creator was on board but as all projects go ... the network wanted something to spice it up.  The creator didn't like the ideas of making his character be well a soap so, he pulled out.   (Don't worry though , Perry Mason did end up on TV in 1957). Then the retooled idea became what became The Edge of Night. This soap was different  it focused on crime and mystery.  With crime  you had storylines follow  the cops  , district attenornies , gangsters, blackmailers , bad politicians . amnesia (it was a soap after all) ,marriage, murder, divorces , and more .  Viewers found the show interesting at the start , and because it had lots of crime it had a lot of males watching , unusual for soaps ( Men love to see gangsters and murders , oh my )  and it also came on at 4:30 Eastern. In 1963 it was moved to 3:30 Eastern  where it stayed and did well , beating ABC  and NBC.   But when Proctor and Gamble ( Busy scamps aren't they?) , the producers for the show, insisted that their shows air in a block  it was moved to 2:30 Eastern in 1972.  The ratings dropped , probably because all the teens and men weren't home to watch it now.
     
     Finally, a King size box of Tide what will they think up next?
      In 1975, after NBC decided  to expand a couple soaps to an hour , CBS wanted to the same thing. So they picked , As The World Turns . But as As the World Turns aired at 1:30 Eastern , CBS couldn't air it starting at 1 Eastern, due to some stations having newscasts (for some reason, I mean really) , and the original 4:30 slot for Edge was not open either so ... guess what had to be axed?  ( Guiding Light?)    Proctor and Gamble   found a savoir though , ABC , ABC wanted the show.  The Final CBS episode was November 28th ,1975  and moved to ABC December 1st 1975.  It aired at 4:00 Eastern  (close to original earlier times of 4:30 and 3:30 )  and 12:00 in the West (wait the West got it first?)    The problem with the time though was many viewers weren't able to see the program because their station  would replace the program with something else (that's just rude , local station, rude).    In 1983 , P&G dismissed long time  headwriter  , Henry Slesar ,  the new head writer couldn't help downing ratings.  ABC  and P&G announced the Edge of Night would end in 1984. In true soap style it ended with a cliff hanger.

2.  Loving
    From the creator of "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" , Agnes Nixon  and also an actor named Douglas Marland , was a new soap for the 80's called "Loving".    Loving  took place in a fake place in Pennsylvania called Corinth .  This soap was trying get back to basics of the soap genre with a focus on romance. (Thus the name)  Loving premiered in a two hour prime time movie on June 26, 1983.  The original focus was two families , Tthe Donovans and The Aldens. Issues in the show were  alcoholism, post-traumatic stress of Vietnam vets.  Loving  didn't have high ratings  Random story lines  came into the show, such as  addictions of  cough syrup.

   The series lasted over 10 years but in 1995 , ABC wanted to end it  and so the show went out big , with a serial killer who  killed a bunch of characters and a character killing a lot of characters.  (Not very loving , is it?)  In November of 1995 the series ended.

3. Sunset Beach
    NBC daytime was looking to spruce up it's line up so a new soap was made in 1996 to premiere in the new year of 1997.  Sunset Beach was produced  by Aaron Spelling. It was the first daytime soap created by Spelling Entertainment.  NBC was looking for younger viewers  (isn't everyone?) as a way to get more viewers to the soap genre . The series  had traditional  storylines or supernatural ones (why not?)   It had an evil twin storyline , disappearances, murders and cheating, (more to list too, it's a soap remember)   As with most soaps from the past , it ended in 1999 due to low ratings it couldn't capture enough viewers for NBC's happiness. (Maybe  NBC wasn't young enough?)
 Wait! there's more....  Channel 5 in the UK  wanted to save the show, the soap was popular in the UK (rare for a U.S Soap) they were even willing to partially fund it, but NBC didn't feel interested. (Wonder what have happened if 5 said they were willing to fund the whole thing)

4,Love of Life
   From the creator of "Search for Tomorrow" there was another soap (He was seeing another soap ,I thought he loved Search for Tomorrow, shame on you ,Roy) , there was   Love of Life a series that premiered 3 weeks  after "Search for Tomorrow"in 1951 on CBS.  It was owned by American Home Products. For the first few years , like many soaps it was 15 minutes in length it became popular and expanded to 30 minutes in 1958.   The Original plot line was good versus evil ; a good sister, Vanessa  Dale, and bad Sister , Meg Dale.    Meg was eventually phased out of the program  and changed fictional locations. ( Just like real life)  The series became about  Vanessa and her marriage  and to make it more interesting , they brought back the first husband who was killed off earlier in the soap.(well not very well)

 Meg and her son did return in the 70's to help the ratings and the original good vs bad theme returned.  But   now the series  was losing viewers and CBS tried alot to keep it, even moving it to 4:00 Eastern , but it was over. It ended with a cliff hanger in 1980.

CNN Canceling spree

    CNN has begun the Turner layoffs and now 3 CNN network programs have been canceled.  According to TVNewser  and The Warp.
      CNN canceled the long running  "Sanjay Gupta M.D" weekend program , Gupta, himself will continue to be at CNN.  They also ended "CNN Money"  ,another CNN program that has been around awhile with different names , Christine Romans will also still be a the network.
According to TV Newser : CNN Medical correspondents , Sanjay Gupta and Elizabeth Cohen will still provide breaking medical news coverage ,field reporting ,and documentaries.
   Also, CNNs revival of Cross Fire ,which has been off the air since July , has also been canceled , according to TV Newser.    Newt Gingrich, S.E. Cupp, Van Jones, and Stephanie Cutter , the hosts of the program will still continue to contribute to the network.  Also, CNN's  sports program "Unguarded with Rachel Nicols" has also been canceled, Nicols will also be staying with the network.    It is unknown how many  staffers have been laid off due to these cancellations.

    Yesterday, HLN , CNN sister network , canceled Jane Velez  Mitchel's show was canceled  and Mitchell is leaving the network.     And CNN's Entertainment unit is also being disbanded 

HBO without the Cable

         HBO Go has become a popular app , many people who wanted HBO programming but didn't have cable and an HBO subscription  where either left out , or  (cough) asked friends or family members who did for their user name and password.
     Today , HBO  chairman and CEO Richard Plepler  announced that HBO will be launching a HBO stand-alone streaming service in 2015 for those who don't  have cable.  It probably won't be HBO Go , per say, not sure how cable companies ,who HBO still dependents on for it's money  would feel about that or even this streaming idea.  The Press release didn't say much about pricing or more details ,which will probably come out sometime in the future.

ABC Famiy announces it's 2014 25 days of Christmas line up

   ABC Family announced it's  2014 schedule  for it's annual 25 days of Christmas .  Last week it announced it's  Countdown schedule  .
                                        

Burbank, CA (October 13, 2014) — ABC Family’s “25 Days of Christmas,” cable’s biggest programming event of the year, returns with 25-continuous days of holiday-themed entertainment for the whole family.
