The Lookback: The Charlie Brown Lookback: This is America, Charlie Brown

The Flashback

This time , we look back at  a mini-series "This is America, Charlie Brown".    (No we aren't breaking our rule of not doing holiday specials , since  none of the episodes are holiday specials ,even though  "Mayflower voyagers" airs during Thanksgiving , that's because , why wouldn't it air around Thanksgiving?)
The series is an eight part  mini-series that first aired on CBS in 1988 to 1989, focusing on subjects in American History.

1. May Flower Voyagers
The First, episode of the mini series takes place in 1620 , where the Peanuts characters (narrated by Charlie Brown)  are on the  Mayflower on their way with the pilgrims and the other people who were on their way to the new world on the famous boat.    Something , noticeable with this Peanuts series  is you will see adults and full adult faces   , speaking like people. (Because Wa Wa Wa pilgrims would just be silly)  As you see  in the special , you see them going through the tough ride on the Mayflower , then when they make it to land  the hardship of the first winter  the Massachusetts bay colony settlers experienced in 1620, and the meeting of Squanto and the natives leading into "The First Thanksgiving".

                                                           See Hardships /Copyright Peanuts
    2. The Birth of the Constitution
This is the 2nd episode , and like the first episode it has our  favorite people ( Sally Brown and Snoopy?)  in a different time period (the Peanuts characters are  Time Lords, theory, you go write it now!) this time in 1787 when the constitution was being written , the time of the mini-series was around the the commemorations of the 200th anniversary of the writing and ratification.   It shows us the hard process of  how the constitution was being made , or as Linus statement in the special goes "They can't seem to agree to anything".    (Insert your congress joke here)

"It's not hard guys , it's just a new government...seesh"-not an actual line / Copyright Peanuts
But it's a really good depiction of the all  dis-agreements, compromises, and arm twisting that  happened to put the law of the land that we have now to action.  (And Black mail?) Especially in a cartoon format.

The Lookback: Children's Programs : CBS Saturday Mornings Part 2

The Lookback

We did part one  this is part 2 ,  We are taking  another look at some CBS Saturday Morning programs ; unlike the first one where most of the shows featured were  from the 1980's (except one , oh that's why you said most)  These shows  are mostly from the 1970's and also mostly from Hanna and Barbera (The kings of Children's TV apparently).

 1.  The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show
The Flintstones , were a prime time show on ABC , but when it was canceled it was still popular and repeated on Saturday Mornings  on the networks. (Plus it was cheaper than making a new show for the kids to watch) .  It ran on CBS (well  you didn't read the title did you?)  from September 11th , 1971 to September 2nd 1972.
It takes us to the future  where Fred and Wilma's Daughter  Pebbles  and Barney and Betty's son Bamm-Bamm  are now teenagers. (Factor in that the original series ended in 1965, they were still around 2 or 3 , that means that  we skipped a lot of time, also it's a cartoon)  They were also sweethearts.  (awww , Bamm-Bamm)  The show took place with our main characters  at high-school (where Teenagers seem to be ) in Bedrock . They had friends : MoonRock (space-age!) , Penny  (what no rock name?) , and Wiggy.   Also Cindy (not Brady, maybe), Pebbles' rival,  and her boyfriend Fabian (again did the rock puns die in this series?).  There was also a motorcycle gang in the series (  well.. you, know what you are on your own on this) .

   Thanks and Hanna and Babera

Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm were  seen in later Flintstones Movies and TV shows ,except (definitely)  "Flintstones Kids".
Fun fact:  The Actor Jay North (From the Live-action , Dennis the Meance , voiced Bamm-Bamm)

2.   The Flintstone Comedy Hour
So , the Flintstones were  a thing again , in 1972 (wait 1972?)  It was an hour long show (again titles)  it ran from September 9th 1972- September 1st ,1973,   The show had two halves  , the first had featured Fred and Barney shorts,  A short with Pebbles and Bamm-bamm  and music from the BedRock , "The Bedrock Rockers". (Yay , I have all their records)  Meanwhile , the 2nd half hour was a new episode of "The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show".
There series ended in 1973 ,and CBS repackaged the show as The Flintstone Comedy Show (not an hour anymore) , which also how it aired in Syndication in repeats.

I like how Fred Never ages /   Copyright H&B

Fact:  It was the final series to Alan Reed as the voice of Fred , due to his death 1977.

The Lookback: The Charlie Brown Lookback: He's your Dog , Charlie Brown

The Flashback

Welcome to our Fifth installment of our monthly series in a series , our lookbacks at Charlie Brown  specials that are not holiday specials.   This time we take a look at  "He's Your Dog ,Charlie Brown"

                                                          "So?"  Copyright  Peanuts

This special came out on Valentine's Day in 1968 , it is noted for being the last special where at least some of the members were voices from the Christmas special. (Darn kids, getting all old)
It begins  with  Snoopy going around our characters  and annoying them  so much they  complain to Charlie Brown because "He's Your Dog! "  (One of these Days , Alice, Charlie Brown is going to get rich and be spiteful toward  Lucy , but will marry Marcy)  So Charlie Brown calls Daisy Hill Puppy Farm ( who didn't pay for this segment , but   where do you get your puppies?)  so he can learn some obedience.
Snoopy has to stay at Peppermint  Patty's house ( we like her , she's not a jerk ) because it's a long distance to the farm. ( this time not  code for doggy heaven)  On his way Snoopy does some cool 1960's stuff like kick a can (also not doggy heaven) , run  a stick through a fence (  Dennis the Beagle) , and balance a stick on his nose. ( That's what they thought you in Middle School , this is a lie)

Peace agreement settled ,war is over / Copyright peanuts

Anyway ,Snoopy Makes to Peppermint Patty's house (coming to NBC ) , the next day things take a turn  (No TV and no beer makes Snoopy...? no?) every one back at home notices how quiet things are with out him , but Snoopy has decided not to go to the farm  and he stays with Peppermint Patty. (Charlie Brown should have really checked this plan)  He stays there a week so far and the farm calls Charlie Brown telling him that Snoopy hasn't shown up. (hmm not the best system)   he also finds out that he's still at Peppermint  Patty's and that Snoopy is using her a servant. (Why didn't Peppermint Patty call , CB?)  Snoopy  escapes from Charlie  Brown when he tries and gets him  and goes back to Peppermint Patty. Though she makes rules for him , he has to do chores for the house  , while everyone else is missing  him.   (Also Snoopy hates leashes)  For a note:  Lucy   misses Snoopy , that doesn't happen much.  Meanwhile Snoopy enraged about doing chores and breaks some , so Peppermint makes him sleep in the garage. He makes his escape .

                                                           When I escape , I escape with a mustache/ Copyright peanuts

He goes back to Charlie Brown's ( also his ) home and he and C.B  get  are happy to see each other again and their classic dance. (the Tango?)

That's the episode with some spoilers (mean )   I liked this special  ,especially Snoopy's imagination  that he is an French rest stop in World War 1.  Also it's  very different to see Lucy miss Snoopy and be glad that he is back  , that's a nice one.
